Tomorrow the world's oldest football competition kicks off, yes it's that time of the year when the Premier League "Giants" take on the lower league "minnows" in the FA Cup.

Technically the competition started some months ago already but tomorrow is the 3rd round of the tournament that sees the Premier League clubs joining in on the action.

The FA Cup was first held in 1981-72 and has gone on to become on of the most famous football competitions in the world. The fans love the romance of the cup which sees lower league teams regularly coming up against Premier League opponents and obtaining the "giant killer" tag. The tournament has no seeding system thus any team two teams can be drawn against each other with every round being decided by a single match, either home or away depending on which team was drawn first out of the hat.

Cup holders Portsmouth will defend their title at home against Bristol City, Liverpool will travel to Preston on Saturday while Manchester United have an away tie against Southampton. Non League club Barrow could claim the early title as giant killers when they take on Gareth Southgate's struggling Middlesbrough at the Riverside Stadium.

Arsenal and Chelsea both have home matches, against Plymouth and Southend respectively. Here is the full fixture list for the 3rd Round of the FA Cup

:)Should be some good upsets taking place tomorrow...hopefully. Maybe we can keep this thread going until the final?

My upset of the round will be Southampton v Man United. I can see it happening.

Some major upsets on the cards. A lot of teams I am sure no one has ever heard of have made it through this year.

I Think Chelsea will get knocked out...Just a gut feeling. Liverpool and Arsenal will go the furthest out of the big four:)

Is the Tottenham match really tonight?(Thats what SS TV schedule says)

Would be a very strange time to play an FA Cup tie...

Yah but I got the full fixture list/draw results from the BBC and they said matches will be played on the 3rd and 4th of January....

Edit: Okay then. Think I'll tune in for that one tonight:)

Preston vs Liverpool tonight

...Gerrard is back in the team while Torres is back in the Squad ! :)

FA Cup Results: 03 January 2009
There were quite a few FA cup matches taking place today and true to the competitions nature a few of the Premier league big boys were humbled by lower league opposition, and it was the billionaires from Manchester who were responsible for the days biggest "cupset" when they were hammered by three goals to nil at home by lowly Nottingham Forrest.

Forrest opened the scoring with a superb 20 yard drive from Nathan Tyson and doubled their lead through Robert Earnshaw three minutes before the break and Garner wrapped up a convincing victory at the City of Manchester Stadium with the visitors third goal of the match in the 75th minute.

Newcastle and Hull played to a very entertaining 0 - 0 draw and will now face each other again in 10 days time at St. James park. There was another big cupset when Chelsea were held to a draw at Stamford Bridge by Southend thanks to a 90th minute goal by Southend's Peter Clarke as Chelsea were made to rue their missed chances.

In other results Liverpool and Arsenal advanced to the 4th round with comfortable victories, Liverpool beating Preston 2 - 0 thanks to goals from Riera and Torres while Robin Van Persie starred for the gunners with a brace in their 3-1 win over Plymoth at the Emirates. League one side Hartlepool pulled off another upset when they beat Stoke city by two goals to nil and Bristol City earned a reply when they held FA Cup holders Portsmouth to a goalless draw at Fratton Park.

Here is a round up of today's results:

Arsenal 3 - 1 Plymoth

Chelsea 1 - 1 Southend

Portsmouth 0 - 0 Bristol City

Preston 0 - 2 Liverpool

Hartlepool 2 - 0 Stoke City

Middlesbrough 2 - 1 Barrow

Sunderland 2 - 1 Bolton

Hull 0 - 0 Newcastle

Macclesfield - 1 Everton

Torquay 1 - 0 Blackpool

Manchester City 0 - 3 Nottingham Forrest

Forrest Green 3 - 4 Derby

Cardiff 2 - 0 Reading

Charlton 1 - 1 Norwich

Leicester 0 - 0 Crystal Pallace

Coventry 2 - 0 Kidderminster

Ipswich 3 - 0 Chesterfield

Kettering 2 - 1 Eastwood Town

Millwall 2 - 2 Crewe

QPR 0 - 0 Burnley

Sheffield Wednesday 1 - 2 Fulham

Watford 1 - 0 S****horpe

West Brom 1 - 1 Petersbrough

Quite a few "cupsets" yesterday. looks like my gut feeling was right;)

You guys think Hughes will be getting the sack now? I think it's only a matter of time

I reckon Man U will beat Southampton 3-0 today. That's my bold prediction. 7 minutes and no goal though - poor form...:D:D

I don't know DJK..I smell another upset coming...
Southampton are all over United at the mo

I reckon Man U should have scored twice already. Don't think they're all over Man U at all - if anything it's swinging in Man U's favour. But I like the fact that they're taking the game to Man U. Should make for some exciting footie...

EDIT: 1-0 to Man U

WOOT!!!!

United's 2nd string doing ok so far....

That red card was the clearest red I have seen for a while...

Clearest? The guy got the ball and even the most biased commentator on Supersport said that you could see that it wasn't intentional.

This referee is pathetic. Gave a penalty for no reason now. I think Mike Reilly can give Rob Stiles a run for his money when it comes to the FA's worst referees.

Studs showing, going in hard, stamping - doesn't matter if it is intentional these days anymore - that is a red card if you connect with the player. The precedent was set that way this season.

The defender lifted his arm while jumping - he's a twit for giving the ref the ammo in the first place. Jumping in a wall with your arms in the air is asking for trouble, especially if you're in your own box. And based on Riley's angle of view it is understandable how he thought it came off the arm.

However I will concede that he isn't the best of refs and at the end of the day, it was an incorrect decision. But the defender is equally to blame. As a manager I'd be pretty pissed if my defenders were jumping with their arms in the air inside the box - twit.
