The Ferrari LaFerrari Thread

I still find this car terribly underwhelming and even odd looking from some angles.

The last LaFerrari coupé ever built has been sold at auction for a whopping $7-million (around R97-million) to benefit the reconstruction of central Italy in the aftermath of the devastating earthquakes of 2016.

The auction was held in Daytona Beach, Florida, in conjunction with RM Sotheby’s and in collaboration with the National Italian American Foundation’s Earthquake Relief Fund. The price achieved represents a record for the most valuable 21st-century car ever sold at auction.

All proceeds from the auction will go towards the reconstruction efforts in the areas affected by the earthquakes.

The LaFerrari in question is the 500th built and boasts a unique livery with a distinctly Italian theme: a red exterior with a white “dream line” on the bonnet and rear windshield. A small Italian flag on the front of the bonnet serves as a reminder that “this is a gift by Ferrari to its home country”. The car will also feature a commemorative plaque.

SARS thwarts attempt to ‘smuggle’ LaFerrari into SA…

The South African Revenue Service says that it has intercepted a LaFerrari that the owner was attempting to smuggle into the country.

According to Eyewitness News, the unidentified owner first brought the hypercar into South Africa in 2014, but failed to follow the correct import procedures, which included paying the necessary customs duties and VAT.

So, SARS put the limited production, 708 kW hybrid hypercar into a bonded warehouse for three years as the owner struggled to finalise the “required customs processes”, SARS spokesperson Sandile Memela told the African News Agency.

But in February this year, the owner declared that the vehicle would be exported to the Democratic Republic of Congo instead, via the Beitbridge border post.

“A day later, there was an attempt to have the vehicle return to South Africa through the same border post,” Memela explained.

The revenue service then seized the LaFerrari at the border, before issuing the owner with a letter of intent as part of the Promotion of Administrative Justice Act No 3 of 2000 to enable them to make a representation to SARS.

New, LaFerrari pricing started at $1,35-million (about R17,6-million in today’s money), although at the end of 2016 the 500th unit produced sold for a whopping $7-million (around R91,2-million) at auction.

This article leaves me with more questions than answers. So here we have someone dropping A million dollars on a car and:

A) he can't afford the taxes
B) he is resourceful, so thought he would pay a facilitation fee to get the car past customs.
C) he simply doesn't care

Either way, I'm pretty sure it's not good for this car to stand for such a long period of time? Majour service, oil changes etc probably due even before you try to start it up...
