The Ferrari LaFerrari Thread

This article leaves me with more questions than answers. So here we have someone dropping A million dollars on a car and:

A) he can't afford the taxes
B) he is resourceful, so thought he would pay a facilitation fee to get the car past customs.
C) he simply doesn't care

Either way, I'm pretty sure it's not good for this car to stand for such a long period of time? Majour service, oil changes etc probably due even before you try to start it up...

Agreed. Lots of unanswered questions.

Wrt to the car's Hybrid system. Ferrari advises the car needs to be on charge if not used for a short period of time.

I can only imagine how this car will when it's finally started up after a few years!

Smuggled LaFerrari intercepted at SA border

Sars customs officials intercepted a LaFerrari, with an estimated value of over R13.8 million, which was being smuggled back into South Africa, the revenue service said on Wednesday.

Spokesperson Sandile Memela said the very rare 708kW V12 petrol-electric hybrid supercar had originally been stored at a bonded warehouse in South Africa, since 2014.

“When it was first brought into the country, the owner failed to follow correct import procedures including paying the necessary customs duties and VAT. As a result, the vehicle stayed in a bonded warehouse for three years because the owner could not finalise the required customs processes,” Memela said.

“Then in February 2017, the vehicle owner submitted an export declaration to take the car to the Democratic Republic of Congo through Beitbridge border post. A day later, there was an attempt to have the vehicle return to South Africa through the same border post.”

The vehicle was detained and a letter of intent was issued to the unnamed owner to enable them to make representation to Sars, Memela said. Besides the aforementioned issues, the owner would not be allowed to drive the LaFerrari legally on South Africa's roads as it is left-hand drive.

Only 500 LaFerraris were ever made, the last one having sold for $7 million (R91 million) at an auction held for the benefit of an Italian earthquake relief fund late last year.

In fact, the supercar was never officially for sale to the public, rather Ferrari decided exactly which of its loyal customers would be offered the privilege of buying one. In fact, it became so sought after that a wealthy American collector, Preston Henn, even tried to sue the company for refusing to sell him one, citing that it would damage his reputation among in "the universe of Ferrari aficionados". Henn reportedly eventually dropped the lawsuit and bought a Honda NSX instead.

Ferrari considers its limited edition cars ‘gifts’…

Just 200 units of the LaFerrari Aperta were produced.

Ferrari’s chief marketing and commercial officer says that the act of offering its best customers the opportunity to purchase its limited edition vehicles is considered “a gift”.

Talking to Drive, Enrico Galliera said that part of his job was to ensure that the Italian marque’s top customers were “rewarded”.

“We have much higher demand than the availability. So what we do is identify criteria that reward good customers. The limited edition cars we consider a gift to our best customers,” he told the Australian publication.

Galliera added that he often received enquiries from “people who do not deserve” to own a Ferrari.

“At the very beginning, you receive applications from people who do not deserve [to buy a Ferrari] … they simply have the money. ‘I am the king of something, so I deserve the car’. I say ‘Yes, but you are not a Ferrari client’.”

He also explained that often a “very good customer” would have to be turned away, as was the case with many parties interested in the LaFerrari Aperta, which was limited to 200 units – all of which were sold sight unseen.

“That’s the easy part. Then you have someone who is still a very good customer, but is not in the top 200, and I cannot offer him the car. Normally most of them understand. Some of them that are not used to hearing ‘no’ keep asking.

“The most difficult part of my job is when I join an event and the person is there, and he becomes hard-headed, and he locks onto me and keeps asking and asking,” Galliera said.

You could own this one-of-a-kind LaFerrari Aperta and help children in need

To celebrate its 70th anniversary, Ferrari will auction a one-of-a-kind LaFerrari Aperta to benefit the charity Save the Children.

The auction will take place on September 9, during the "Leggenda e Passione" sale organised with RM Sotheby's.

Rare car auction

The event, which will be held at Ferrari's Fiorano track, is expected to be the most important single marque collector's car auction in history.

The LaFerrari Aperta is a limited-edition special series model launched to commemorate the 70th anniversary of the foundation of the automaker. Designed for Ferrari's most passionate clients, the LaFerrari Aperta is the open-top version of the acclaimed LaFerrari hybrid supercar, combining extraordinary performance with the unique exhilaration of open-top driving.

For the auction, Ferrari has designed a one-of-a-kind livery in metallic Rosso Fuoco and features a metallic Bianco Italia double racing stripe along the bonnet and rear. The interior is finished in black Alcantara and gloss black carbon fibre with red leather inserts on the seats and red stitching.

All proceeds of the auction will be donated to Save the Children for an international program focusing on education.

LAFERRARI APERTA UP FOR AUCTION… A RECORD COMING?

Ferrari is no stranger to supporting a good cause. Recently the company held the 500th LaFerrari Coupé up for auction with the proceeds going to the relief effort of the nasty earthquake that had hit Italy last August. That specific car sold for a very impressive $7 million; around double the price of a regular LaFerrari Coupé.

Now, Ferrari is doing the same with the even rarer LaFerrari Aperta. According to Ferrari this Aperta is being auctioned to celebrate the company’s 70th birthday, with the proceeds going to the Save the Children charity. This Aperta has special details such as metallic Rosso Fuocco together with a metallic Bianco Italia double racing stripe leading over the bonnet and rear of the this open-top hyper car.

According to RM Sotheby’s, this is not one of the nine additional LaFerrari Apertas the Italian manufacturer has planned on top of the 200 they have allocated to it’s best clients. The one auctioned will actually be the 210th LaFerrari Aperta.

Leading automotive auction house RM Sotheby’s will host the very special “Leggenda e Passione” auction in Maranello. This will form part of a three-day event held in Maranello for the celebration festivities. View the impressive lot list on RM Sotheby’s website.

The Last LaFerrari Aperta Sold For R130 Million

Remember we showed you images of what Ferrari are calling the last LaFerrari Aperta? Well the auction has concluded and as expected the number is eye-watering.

The new owner will need to part with a whopping $9.98 million (approx. R130 million) to have this topless beauty in his garage but at least the money is going to a good cause. All the proceeds from the sale will be donated to Save the Children, an international organization that works to improve the lives of disadvantaged children in over 120 countries worldwide.

With this price comes a new record for being the most expensive 21st century car sold at auction which means the 500th LaFerrari Coupe that has that title now slips to second place. This was expected considering the Aperta is a lot more desirable and produced in less than half of the numbers of the Coupe.
