The FIFA corruption thread

Sponsors starting to voice their disapproval now...quote from Visa:

Quote “Our disappointment and concern with FIFA in light of today’s developments is profound. As a sponsor, we expect FIFA to take swift and immediate steps to address these issues within its organization. This starts with rebuilding a culture with strong ethical practices in order to restore the reputation of the games for fans everywhere.

Visa became a sponsor of FIFA because the World Cup is one of the few truly global sporting events with the power to unite people from around the world through a common love of football. Our sponsorship has always focused on supporting the teams, enabling a great fan experience, and inspiring communities to come together and celebrate the spirit of competition and personal achievement – and it is important that FIFA makes changes now, so that the focus remain on these going forward. Should FIFA fail to do so, we have informed them that we will reassess our sponsorship.”

This is where British, French and Swiss authorities need to man up. The Swiss have started. Last night on the BBC, a Tory MP said the UK Serious Fraud Office was investigating. Should we even hold our breath for the French?
These govt's can finger the African and Asian officials if they have the political will. I'm hopeful, but not optimistic.

The Swiss are already standing up and the UK will act. They lost out on 2018 and are bitter. The French, yeah, who knows... I'm guessing it's Asia or local holidays only for a couple of folk in top positions here from here on out.

ehhh, we have an extradition treaty with the USA...

The Australians are asking for a $40 million refund on the money they spent on the 2022 bidding process, this is going to snowball, FIFA are screwed.

They might have to auction off Cristiano Ronaldo's hair

I hope making Danny Jordaan as mayor close to this is just pure coincidence :o

He probably knew something was going to happen. And the ANC helped him hide by becoming a politician. Thereby turning him into a diplomatic chess piece.

We do but let's spitball here... If, let's say, a prominent ANC mayor were to be implicated, how would his party obfuscate the claims, how long do you think the court process could be dragged out locally and would the delays affect other dealings between the two countries? Yeah, we have one but this could really test it.

Cadre redeployment, he can now take the high road and resign from SAFA on the basis of devoting his time to being the mayor.

Fifa officials arrested on corruption charges – reports

Any updates on UEFA's calls to postpone the FIFA presidential elections tomorrow? If they let it happen and Sepp gets a fifth, it'll be like watching a coffin being lowered into the ground.

None yet, lots of people are calling for Blatter's resignation. The thing is he is so sure of himself he probably thinks he can get through this unscathed.

quite true. Also, Asia are supporting the blatter bid and want the elections to go through tomorrow.

What is CAF, North and South America's position?

I'm sure the Oceania region would love to oust blatter...

From what I can tell the South Americans are pretty gleeful about all this, not sure about the other federations.

Yep. I'm sure he feels he's better equipped to plough through all of this as the head of a billion dollar syndicate, sorry, I mean organisation, with all of its resources at his disposal... To hell with the reputational damage it does. Wait... Are we in a FIFA or Zuma thread here? ;)

Well done USA.

I think it is one of those things were every other country is beholden to the revenues that flow around soccer. The Yanks took a look at the balance sheet and said the worst that can happen is that we annoy a bunch of school girls and, besides, Lyndsay Lohan is too old or pissed to make another soccer movie.

A lot of their guys got nabbed as well....I would say the majority are from Latin America. It reads like the who's who of Banana Republics

The Americans showing us how to deal with corruption. I hope some cadres gets exposed especially Danny Jordaan.
