Blatter, Platini slapped with 8-year bans

A FIFA court on Monday banned Sepp Blatter and Michel Platini for eight years after finding them guilty of abusing their positions over a two million Swiss francs payment that was made to the suspended head of European football.

Both were "immediately" banned from all football activity. Blatter, FIFA's president since 1998, was fined 50 000 Swiss francs. Platini was fined 80 000 Swiss francs.

Blatter and Platini, who had been the most powerful men in football, insisted that the payment made in 2011 had been legitimate following an oral contract.

But FIFA's judges said the "assertion of an oral agreement was determined as not convincing and was rejected by the chamber".

The statement by the court said both showed "abusive execution" of their powers.

Blatter's "actions did not show commitment to an ethical attitude, failing to respect all applicable laws and regulations as well as FIFA's regulatory framework," the court said.

In the case of Platini, the court said he "failed to act with complete credibility and integrity, showing unawareness of the importance of his duties".

For Blatter, 79, the lengthy ban almost certainly marks the end of his career in football administration.

For Platini, 60, the suspension has derailed his hopes of replacing Blatter at the top of world football's governing body, after having been the favourite to claim the post.

Appeals to an internal FIFA committee and the Court of Arbitration for Sport are however possible for both men.

It seems although football was growing in exciting us fans, all that was built on shady deals by the executives. We need to clean FIFA and start all over building football on good foundation.

UEFA 'disappointed' in FIFA ruling

Nyon - The European football federation (UEFA) said it was "disappointed" in FIFA's decision on Monday to ban Michel Platini for eight years over an ethics violation, expressing support for the Frenchman's right to an appeal.

"Naturally, UEFA is extremely disappointed with this decision, which nevertheless is subject to appeal," the governing body said of the ruling against Platini, who is UEFA's president.

"UEFA supports Michel Platini's right to a due process and the opportunity to clear his name," the statement added.

Sexwale questioned over Fifa bribe claims - report

Johannesburg - Former South African Cabinet minister and Fifa presidential candidate Tokyo Sexwale has appeared before a US grand jury as part of an investigation into alleged corruption at football's governing body, the BBC has reported.

The British broadcaster said he was questioned in New York on December 17 about an alleged $10m bribe paid to Fifa's former vice president Jack Warner.

An unnamed spokesperson for Sexwale told the BBC that the FBI said he needed to appear, and he went as a potential witness.

News24 reported previously that South Africa was alleged to have paid a $10m bribe to secure the rights to host the 2010 World Cup. The payment was allegedly made to the Confederation of North, Central American and Caribbean Association Football (Concacaf). Warner was Concacaf president until he was suspended and resigned in 2011.

According to the FBI, Warner used portions of the payment for his private use. He was extradited from Trinidad to face corruption charges in the US.

Former president Thabo Mbeki has denied the bribery claims. The South African government insisted the payment was not a bribe, but a donation to the so-called African Diaspora Legacy Fund.

Fifa's ethics committee this week banned disgraced Fifa president Sepp Blatter and Uefa boss Michel Platini from all soccer-related activities for eight years. The matter involved a $2 million "disloyal payment" made to Platini in 2011.

The other candidates to replace Blatter included Prince Ali bin al Hussein of Jordan, Uefa general-secretary Gianni Infantino, Asian football head Sheikh Salman bin Ebrahim al-Khalifa of Bahrain, and Jerome Champagne, a former Fifa assistant general-secretary.

Fifa's presidential election is expected to take place on February 26.

Sepp Blatter feels ‘abandoned’ by Fifa after eight-year suspension

The banned Fifa president Sepp Blatter has said he feels “abandoned” by football’s governing body and will now focus on clearing his name.

Fifa’s ethics committee last week banned Blatter and the Uefa president Michel Platini from football for eight years for ethics violations. Both men immediately denied any wrongdoing and said they would appeal to the Swiss-based Court of Arbitration for Sport.

“I now no longer fight for Fifa,” Blatter, who led Fifa for 17 years, said according to the German magazine Bunte. “They abandoned me. I am now only fighting for myself and my honour.”

Blatter had come out swinging against the ban, saying that he was sorry only that the president of Fifa was being treated as a “punching ball” and adding: “I will fight for me and I will fight for Fifa.”

Banned Michel Platini could face further trouble over appearance at Dubai event

Banned Uefa president Michel Platini could face further investigation from Fifa’s ethics committee after attending an awards ceremony and conference in Dubai despite being barred from “all football activity”.

Platini, the head of European football body Uefa, was handed an eight year ban from the game on 21 December, along with banned Fifa president Sepp Blatter. He is appealing the decision and insists he has done no wrong.

The ban relates to a payment of two million Swiss francs made by Blatter’s Fifa to Platini in 2011, nine years after he finished working as a consultant to Blatter.

On 27 December, Platini attended the Globe Soccer Awards organised by the Dubai Sports Council in Dubai, along with football stars such as Lionel Messi and Andrea Pirlo.

Frenchman Platini was photographed at the event and also made comments regarding his ban to the Italian media while in Dubai.

Swiss deliver first evidence to US in Fifa case

ZURICH - Switzerland's Federal Office of Justice (FOJ) on Wednesday handed over the first batch of evidence to United States authorities for its investigation into alleged bribery schemes for soccer marketing rights.

Zurich-based Fifa is mired in a graft scandal with authorities in Switzerland and the US investigating corruption by various individuals with ties to world soccer's governing body.

Just over seven months since a group of Fifa officials were arrested in Zurich on US warrants, the FOJ said it had now delivered the first round of evidence to authorities in the United States for their investigation.

Platini withdraws bid for FIFA presidency

Paris - Suspended UEFA chief Michel Platini on Thursday withdrew from the race to become FIFA president, telling L'Equipe that he will concentrate on clearing his name instead.

"I will not present myself for the presidency of FIFA. I am withdrawing my candidature. I no longer have the time nor the means to go to the voters, to meet people, to fight against the other candidates," said Platini in reference to the January 26 deadline for nominations to succeed Sepp Blatter.

"In withdrawing, I am dedicating myself to my defence."

Platini and Blatter were suspended for eight years by FIFA's ethics committee over a 2 million Swiss franc payment made to Platini in 2011 for work carried out between 1999 and 2002.

The 60-year-old Platini added that his eight-year ban has made it impossible for him to have any kind of constructive campaign to take the sport's most powerful job.

The new FIFA president will be revealed on February 26.

Jerome Valcke: Fifa sacks secretary general

World football's governing body Fifa has dismissed secretary general Jerome Valcke.

The Frenchman, 55, was provisionally suspended from football for his alleged involvement in a scheme to profit from the sale of World Cup tickets.

He was released from his duties on 17 September after being accused of a series of Fifa ethics code breaches.

Appointed in 2007, the former right-hand man of Fifa president Sepp Blatter has denied any wrongdoing.

"The duties of the secretary general will continue to be assumed by the acting secretary general, Dr Markus Kattner," read a Fifa statement.

Fifa's ethics committee said on 7 January that it had decided to open "formal adjudicatory proceedings" against Valcke after studying a report submitted by its investigatory chamber.
