The fine wine thread

It's a good crush. I do hate it though when cellars start calling 6 year old bottles "vintage".
Uhm it does not mean it's a vintage wine ......the vintage is the year in which the wine was produced/the grapes were harvested.

Nice company for tonight's sushi.

I'm looking for recommendations for an affordable Chenin Blanc or Sauvignon Blanc. Want to order a box or two. I've been looking at Du Toitskloof, Kleine Zalze and Alvi's Drift. Any others you would recommend?

If your looking at affordable look at Arabella. Great quality wines at decent prices. Durbanville Hills Sauvignon Blanc also always a winner.

Hey Everyone

Was hoping to get some advice for choosing a wine to age

I want to buy at least 24 wines now which I can lay down for the next 15-20 years and enjoy these at specific milestones in the future (e.g. birthdays, graduations) Previously, I've kept some wines for around 12 years (in generally okay conditions - not even a cellar or anything) and these aged amazingly well. The best wines I've had bar none.

Anyway, I wanted to get something that is reasonably priced seeing that I want to buy at least 24 of these. Trying to get below 150 per bottle. Are there any suggested wines (especially since a lot are on special now) that I can consider? If there are any wine farms that even offer to keep these in their cellar, I will happily consider these.

I know there are companies that have these cellars where you can store these wines but buying a wine and keeping it with them might not be feasable for you since your budget is +- R150. Personally I would store that amount of wines in boxes or on a concrete floor in a cupboard where there are little movement. Typically in the south side of the house.

A proper Cab Sauv would properly be a good start to age that long. Not to rule out the others though.

I would also consider going with a more expensive wine and buy 12 every year. My suggestion goes to KWV The Mentors Orchestra 2018. Still available from KWV at R280 per bottle. This wine won the Veritas Vertex award out of 1300 wines and can be kept for 15 years. First red to win this award.

Went this route in 1978 when I took over an accumulation of 390 assorted bottles of red. These have been stored in a cool cellar which varies between 12 deg and 18 deg.

With one exception, all the SA wines became corked. Many simply leaked or lost content. A Roodeberg Cab 1972 lasted. There were 42 bottles and I opened one every other year, except when I lived in England for a bit.

Most of the other SA wines tasted like cardboard. A pleasant surprise was French and Austrian wine. Most is still superb and has definitely improved

There are cellars who will store wines for you in a temperature controlled environment. Not worth it for me, there are only 19 bottles left

It’s a desirable idea, but not practical with today’s wines, which are blended to be consumed within 5 years (My opinion of course)

Wines at your budget cannot be laid down for 15-20 years. It wasn't made for that.
