The fine wine thread

Hey Everyone

Was hoping to get some advice for choosing a wine to age

I want to buy at least 24 wines now which I can lay down for the next 15-20 years and enjoy these at specific milestones in the future (e.g. birthdays, graduations) Previously, I've kept some wines for around 12 years (in generally okay conditions - not even a cellar or anything) and these aged amazingly well. The best wines I've had bar none.

Anyway, I wanted to get something that is reasonably priced seeing that I want to buy at least 24 of these. Trying to get below 150 per bottle. Are there any suggested wines (especially since a lot are on special now) that I can consider? If there are any wine farms that even offer to keep these in their cellar, I will happily consider these.
This is a decent deal and a good ageing wine

Above your R150 but as others mentioned at that price range general not made for ageing. Probably not longer than 10 years depending on the wine.

If you want to cellar wine for 15 - 20 years, it will have to be one hell of a wine.

Usually top cellars will add cellaring ( is that a word? )notes and dates to these wines, so you can make an informed decision.

Wine need great structure, rigid tannin and the perfect level of acid to be cellared for such a long time and still be great.

Nowadays a R150 bottle of red will not give you that.

I agree, R150 bottle isn't going to age that long but there are still ones that could keep for 8 - 10. That Alto Shiraz should cellar for up to 15 if stored well. I have some of this very wine dating back to 2005.

They still make red in the Old World style...perfect to cellar.

Why lay down wine? There are 30 000 wine farms in the Western Cape. That is several lifetimes of tasting

Superb stuff is on sale every day. The Checkers "Wines of the World" is fair. But you need to visit a specialist wine shop like Caroline Fine Wines in Tokai and Cape Town to get the good stuff

Be prepared to spend R250 and up a bottle

Another good place to visit is Mooiberge Farm Stall on the R44 near S/West. Always very good specials. In March found unlabelled KWV Chardonnay for R25 a bottle. If properly labelled this is over R100. We bought so much I was getting a bit sick of it

The Perdeberg Winery between Paarl and Durbanville have clear-out sales in June - July. Most half-price

My favourite wine shop by far is LaVerne in Robertson, run by most efficient and helpful Afrikaans ladies. We travel from Cape Town to Montagu quite often and leave half the boot empty to stock up. Last time there was some "Witblitz" for sale. Just smelling it made me giddy

You cannot go wrong with wine from Robertson...red and white.

I buy online from LeVerne a lot...so convenient.

The Glenelly vineyards is probably the neatest I've seen in my life, not a weed or anything out of place. I'll take a photo when I go pass their again, I haven't tasted their wine though. Their vines looks like it's been pruned by someone with extreme OCD.

Their wines are incredible. I have quite a few in my collection.

I got a bottle of something lying in the back of my cupboard. I got it when I bought my new car a couple of years ago. Bet it will taste like shxt now.

Purely for sentimental reasons actually. Buy some wines now and celebrate milestones in the future with the same wine from the same batch. The limited ageing I have done by myself has also rendered results way, way superior than anything I've ever bought or even tasted before.

I've actually found a few services in the Cape that will help with this! Will report back in December after I've done further studies into it.

Excellent deal on an Unlabeled Cab Sav https://www.haskellvineyards.com/shop/product/dombeya-cabernetsauvignon-case-of-12-special/ bought it a few weeks back when they had it on special, is a decent wine and bargain at that price

Speaking of fine wine, do they still make 5 litre box wine? I see everywhere only advertising those 3 litre jobbies.
