I thought I'd start a thread in our new little food section to showcase some nice wines I've recently purchased.

Think I'm going to make that Shiraz empty now :D

I wouldn't call this a fine wine, but it is certainly a "fine" quaffing wine. ;)

The "Secret Cellar" own label at Ultra is extremely good value, especially the red wine.

Basically anything from the winefarms Durbanville Hills and Alto is good.

But they are a tad on the pricey side. Or actually not come to think of it. For a special occasion, R60-R70 isn't that bad.

I usually go for the R30 - R40 bottles if I'm kuiering with some friends.

Durbanville Hills is nice but their is better unknown gem called Hidden Valley. I'm just scared more people learn about their products and the price goes up.

Red - Hidden Valley Pinotage (http://www.hiddenvalley.co.za/hidden-valley-pinotage.php) This stuff is like gummy berry juice to me
Red- Durbanville Hills Pinotage (http://www.durbanvillehills.co.za/hills-wines.q?productName=pinotage)

White - Haute Cabrière Chardonnay/Pinot Noir (https://www.cabriere.co.za/cabriere-wines/haute-cabriere)

The above wines are my favourites to date.

Stumbled upon this wine one night when I took the wife out and we did not bring any wine with us. Van Loveren the River Red was the house wine and it was bloody good for the price. Then I found the website and they deliver to your door. Pricing is very reasonable.

I have been on red wines mostly, but looking for a nice fruity white wine with hints of citrus to enjoy during the coming summer. Any suggestions ?

Hidden Valley is only an unknown gem as you are in KZN ;) When I was in Stellenbosch I would goto the farm regularly with friends and just sit on the stoep in the sun drinking awesome wine :D

My top picks:

Tokara Directors Reserve 2008 (~R300)
Tokara Walker Bay
Boekenhoutskloof - all their wine
Hamilton Russel - Pinotage and Pinot noir
Neethlingshof - Semillon

Beyerskloof pinotage. had some last night again.

over the weekend had some Hermanuspieterfontein-swartskaap and Zandvliet Cab Sauv.

A wine thread ... celebrates :D

Most people know Durbanville Hills, but Durbanville also has some of the other best wine farms in the country.

I have at least one bottle from each of the top farms in my collection at the moment.

I love Diemersdal's wines. I was lucky enough to get a bottle of their Diemersdal Pinotage Reserve last year while they still had stock.

Altydgedacht's Pinotage is another favourite. Got a bottle of the 2010 and 2011. Their Sauvignon Blanc is in my Top 5.

D'Arias Soprano Shiraz is one of the best Shiraz I've tasted

Durbanville Hills Bastion is one of my favourite blends.

Almost all of Kleinroosboom's wines are excellent. Their Bandana Blanc is great Sauvignon Blanc for the price.

Another good Shiraz is from Meerendal.

Most of Nitida's Wines are excellent, particularly their Cabernet Sauvignon 2009

Some of the most "affordable" wines in the area are from Phizantekraal They have quite a few Cabernet's and Shiraz's from 2007 - 2009 and its interesting to taste how they differ.

My most favourite gem though is the boutique winery of Kronendal. They only really do one wine the Mirari, but it is out of this world!

As for the other wine regions, Beyerskloof's Pinotage's are legendary. The Pinotage Reserve and Field Blend being my favourites. Haven't had the privilege of tasting the Diesel yet though :(

Best Sauvignon Blanc is Springfield Life From Stone without a doubt.

Other favourites:

Shiraz

Warwick Black Lady Syrah 2009

"Chocolate Style" wines

At first I did not like these styles of wine, but they grow on you :erm:

Boekenhoutskloof's The Chocolate Block
Diemersfontein Pinotage
Vrede en Lust Mocholate
Boplaas Tinta Chocolat

Blends

Groote Post The Old Mans Blend
Raka Quinary 2007
Bilton Matt Black <-- love this :p

Cabernet Sauvignon

Brampton Cabernet Sauvignon 2010 <-- great value for money

Your secret is safe with me :)

Looking forward to the trying the hidden valley pinotage. Always looking for decent pinotage - they seems to be rather scarce.
The D Hills range is yummy, can't go wrong with any of them.

I really battled to find it at our local outlets. Then one day I saw it selling at Makro so I got a box of 6 bottles & at a good price as well.

If you are within 60km of Stellenbosch they will also deliver for free but you need to buy 12 bottles or yuo could always just drive there on a weekend outing and go taste some of their wines.
