The Fisker Thread

Somehow, The Fisker Ocean Actually Made It to Production

There's no telling how well it will sell, but the Ocean EV is now officially a real car.

It’s been a few years since Henrik Fisker announced the Fisker Ocean and a full year since production was originally supposed to begin. And yet, against all odds, the Fisker Ocean is officially in production, with the first one rolling off the line today in Graz, Austria.

As Bloomberg reports, the odds really were stacked against Fisker, Inc. The company was so strapped for cash, Henrik Fisker and his wife/co-founder Geeta Gupta-Fisker had to stop drawing a salary and furlough workers. And that was right before the pandemic started, which only made the situation worse.

There was a good chance that would have been the end of Fisker. But in late 2020, it merged with a special purpose acquisition company backed by a huge private equity firm that gave Fisker a billion dollars in cash. Combined with a deal to have Magna Steyr handle production, the company didn’t just avoid bankruptcy. It actually managed to begin production on an actual car, something Faraday Future still hasn’t done.

Fisker Ocean production starts, aiming for over 42,000 units made by the end of 2023

Fisker's Ocean SUV has now reached an important milestone: the official start of production. This will take place at Magna Steyr's carbon-neutral factory in Graz, Austria, and it's on schedule, coming after just two years of development.

Fisker Chairman and CEO Henrik Fisker said: "It's an emotional day as we start production of the world's most sustainable vehicle." He continued: "We've challenged the old model of longer development timelines, reflecting our team's agility and dedication to creating emotionally desirable vehicles with the newest, most unique experiences in our price range. We have the highest quality at launch, aligned with our commitment to leading the industry in sustainability".

The production ramp-up will be slow, however - don't expect millions of these to be coming out of the factory anytime soon. In fact, Fisker plans to have 300 units made in the first quarter of next year, over 8,000 units in Q2, 15,000 in Q3, and 42,400 in total by the end of the year.

Watch exactly how Fisker’s Ocean electric SUV is built in under 3 minutes

Less than a week after officially kicking off production of its Ocean EV overseas, Fisker Inc. has shared video footage of the all-electric SUV being built from start to finish. Check out the three-minute time lapse video from Fisker below.

To say it’s been a journey for Fisker Inc. ($FSR) and its flagship Ocean SUV is an understatement. Years after initially announcing the EV, Fisker has begun production in Graz, Austria, under a previously announced manufacturing contract with Magna Steyr.

The Ocean made its public debut at the LA Auto Show in 2021 when Fisker announced a targeted start of production one year later to the day. Last week, Fisker Inc. made good on that promise and announced that Ocean SUVs had begun being built in Austria as scheduled.

As part of the celebration of the production feat, Fisker shared the timeline Magna currently has in place to ramp up the assembly of the electric SUVs. This includes plans to build 300 Oceans in Q1 of 2023 before rapidly increasing to 8,000 units in Q2, and 15,000 in Q3. By the end of next year, Fisker expects to see 42,400 Oceans built in all.

2024 Fisker Pear: £25,000 Volkswagen ID 3 rival breaks cover

Electric hatchback from American firm will be a “futuristic little space shuttle” with many unique features

Fisker has started road-testing its upcoming Pear electric city car, which will arrive in 2024 with a sub-$30,000 (£25,000) price tag.

Making its debut in a new video clip (below), the Pear (Personal Electric Automotive Revolution) will sit below the upcoming Fisker Ocean crossover, with a shorter wheelbase than its sibling but while retaining a spacious interior.

It will be built by technology manufacturing giant Foxconn at a facility in Ohio – previously owned by General Motors – at an initial rate of 250,000 units per year the second half of 2024, with first deliveries expected soon after.

Company boss Henrik Fisker previously told Autocar the Pear “is the vehicle that ultimately will take us to a million vehicles – we hope – per year, in 2027.”

Fisker Pear EV still on track for £25k price tag

MG 4 rival will be detailed at an investor day alongside new Ronin sports car and Alaska pick-up

US electric vehicle start-up Fisker has outlined some of the ways it will keep the start price of its forthcoming Pear small SUV below $30,000, including fitting a compact new electronic architecture.

The company showed new sketches of the car in an investor presentation on Monday, previewing a continuous light strip around the rear window as well as a new visual treatment of the side windows.

The Pear will be revealed in prototype form at an investor day later this year, CEO Henrik Fisker said on an earnings call with analysts on Monday. The company has previously said first deliveries will start in 2024.

Fisker will also reveal the Ronin electric sports car at the investor day as well as the Alaska, a pick-up version of the company’s Ocean SUV. No date was given for the investor day.

Fisker now has 5600 preorders for the Pear, and will honour its original promise to make it affordable. “It will come out at $29,900 [£24,700],” said Henrik Fisker.

Fisker shows production ready Pear and hints at Ocean getting longer EPA range

Fisker had a couple of aces hiding in its sleeve and played an interesting game the last couple of days. First the company delayed its earnings call which resulted in a flurry of rumors and market responding by shares sliding even further than they already did for the last 12 months.

Then the earnings call came and, despite much lower earnings than expected, the outlook actually is very positive for the company. The market responded with share price rising so Fisker threw a few more coals into the fire - details and photos of the upcoming Pear, the second EV from the company, and positive updates on the long awaited Ocean. The market went wild - 14.55% up and holding steady.

For the first time we have a good look at Pear, an electric car that Fisker is adamant will be sold starting at $29,900 before any incentives. While all along the company was talking about the Pear being a small, city EV, the vehicle we have in front of us is a 5-door crossover not that much smaller than the Fisker Ocean.

We can clearly see the wrap-around windshield that apparently offers unprecedented view forward, there is the signature solar roof and an interesting taillight wrapping around the entire rear window. Apparently Pearl sits higher off the ground than the Ocean does making it a rather interesting choice.

Fisker confirmed during the earnings call, that the company received over 5,600 orders for the Pear already, despite no details of the EV yet available. The car will have “truly revolutionary architecture with just a few central computer units” according to Fisker himself and the version with the biggest battery will have over 300 miles or 483 km of range.

Fisker Ocean US deliveries to start this year

Fisker confirmed it will begin shipping its first electric car to its US based customers this coming spring, without specifying which month exactly. Fisker Ocean has been introduced to US markets as far back as 2020 and eventually production vehicle was shown at the LA Auto Show in 2021

The Fisker Ocean Sport is the base trim available in the US and this version starts at $37,499. It is a single electric motor FWD drivetrain capable of 0 to 100 km/h in 7.4 seconds. The company hasn’t disclosed full specification yet but claims the Touring Range battery pack is good enough for 273 miles.

Next one up is the Fisker Ocean Ultra with dual-motor AWD system and Hyper Range battery which offers up to 379 miles of range. The company claims it can hit 60 mph in just 3.9 seconds or 100 km/h in 4.2 seconds. This version will start at $49,999.

2023 Fisker Ocean offers longest range of any electric SUV

European-built BMW iX3 rival from American start-up has achieved an official WLTP-tested figure of 440 miles

The Fisker Ocean will offer the highest range of any electric SUV when it goes on sale later this year, having achieved 440 miles on the official WLTP test in its range-topping Extreme specification.

That 440-mile figure puts the Ocean far beyond rivals such as the 351 miles offered by the Tesla Model X and the 365 miles provided by the Mercedes-Benz EQS SUV, and Fisker pointed out that it could travel from London to Glasgow on a single charge.

Fisker hasn’t publicly detailed battery specifications for the Ocean yet, but entry-level models feature a smaller battery pack giving up to 275 miles of range.

Set to be available in Europe by the end of April with deliveries planned to start shortly after, the Ocean will start at around £34,990 in the UK.

The EV retails from $37,499 to $68,999 in the US (roughly £27,900 to £51,350). Last year, Fisker told Autocar that because the car will be built in Europe (Austria), prices wouldn't be swollen by import taxes.

Fisker has claimed a 440-mile range for the Ocean Extreme e-SUV

Original estimate of 391 miles exceeded with latest WLTP range update

Fisker has announced that its upcoming Ocean ‘Extreme’ electric SUV will go a very long way indeed on a single charge. Henrik Fisker’s new endeavour now claims a combined WLTP range of 440 miles. That’s… loads.

That puts it comfortably ahead of the Tesla Model S’s 405 miles, a fraction behind the Merc EQS’s 453 miles and some way short of the Lucid Air’s 520 miles (in ‘Dream Edition’ spec); three of the longest-range electric cars available currently. Though whichever way you cut it, 440 miles is still a considerable distance. And bear in mind those three cars are all saloons - Fisker's Ocean therefore, offers the most range from an electric SUV.

While the company has yet to reveal the size of the battery powering the Ocean Extreme’s range highs, expect it to be hovering somewhere near the 100kWh mark; that appears to be the benchmark for big range currently.
Indeed Fisker claims it’s fitted with the ‘hyper range’ battery. Elsewhere the ‘Extreme’ trim level – sitting above ‘Ultra’, ‘Sport’ and ‘One’ – features a dual-motor, AWD drivetrain “with rear disconnect”, a ‘boost mode’, surround view, a tonne of driver assistance, a 17.1in central touchscreen and the ‘SolarSky roof’.

Fisker Ocean comes with 708 km of WLTP range

Good things come to those who wait - apparently. Fisker’s customers have been waiting for the company’s first car, the Ocean SUV for a while now but it seems the wait was well worth it. Fisker Ocean in the Extreme launch edition was given 440 miles WLTP rating which exceeds the expected numbers by 15 percent.

440 miles is just over 708 km and even though the WLTP ratings are still optimistic when we compare them to EPA standards, the 708 km range is still a huge reason for celebrations - both for Fisker and its customers. The only electric cars that come with better range are Lucid Air Grand Touring, Grand Touring Performance, and Dream Edition Range.

While Fisker is awaiting the EPA results - which most likely will be much lower - the company is not wasting any time and rubbing it in. Truth be told - the celebrations are well deserved, after all the Fisker Ocean is an SUV that has the fourth-best WLTP range among electric cars available in Europe and the US.

When we look at the driving range of electric SUVs, the gap between Fisker Ocean and the competition grows significantly. BMW iX xDrive50 offers 611 km, Tesla Model X LR+ comes with 560 km, Tesla Model Y LR has 565 km and the Mercedes EQS SUV 580 4MATIC tops out at 602 km. Those cars already offer what is considered a great range but Fisker Ocean Extreme goes an extra 100 km - that’s a huge difference.

Fisker Ocean is close to EPA approval - its final step before going on sale in the US

Fisker was celebrating last week the results of WLTP testing of its first electric car. The Fisker Ocean was awarded an unprecedented 708 km rating and immediately became an electric SUV with the highest driving range currently on the market.

While the WLTP is accepted by most countries as an indication of the vehicle’s energy consumption, the US has its own testing requirements. The EPA (Environmental Protection Agency) issues a Certificate of Conformity before any vehicle can be sold in the country. Fisker confirmed it has already supplied all the driving range test results to the EPA and it expects the Ocean to be awarded a 350-mile rating.

EPA’s 350 miles is 563 km which is a huge difference from the 708 km given by WLTP. The truth is, WLTP ratings are still optimistic and the EPA tests are the closest to real-life conditions. Many cars actually exceed the EPA ratings but no car has ever exceeded its WLTP rating.

Fisker Ocean should get the full EU approval by the end of this month and the company already promised the deliveries will begin soon after. The factory in Austria is preparing to increase its production rate from April 20 for the European models. Vehicles going to the US will have their production ramp-up commence early in May.

First Fisker Ocean electric SUV officially delivered

This is a huge milestone for Fisker and on time as well. The company promised the deliveries would begin in May and here we are - the very first Fisker Ocean has been officially handed over to one very happy customer. Henrik Fisker himself was on hand to pass the keys and pose for the photos and to celebrate this most important moment.

The event took place in the newly opened Fisker Center in Copenhagen, Denmark. The vehicle in question was finished in Great White with the Sea Salt interior and white Alcantara seats. The contrasting black 22” AirGlider wheels complete the clean and classy look. This was the first of 5,000 units of the limited ONE launch edition which should all be delivered to the customers before September.

It has been a while since we first saw the Fisker Ocean at the 2021 LA Auto Show. The car received a very warm welcome thanks to its really good looks and many clever solutions. It has to be one of the best-looking SUVs on the market and it is one with the longest range - it received a 440-mile WLTP rating when equipped with 20” wheels and a 336-mile rating with 22” wheels and Fisker expects to achieve a 350-mile rating from EPA.

Fisker Ocean went into production in November, the company is already preparing to expand its production capacity with its partner Magna Steyr who’s responsible for manufacturing. During the initial production stages, the company manufactured all test and homologation vehicles with Ocean Sport and Ocean Ultra leaving the Austrian factory recently.

The first 440-mile Fisker Ocean EV has been delivered

Danish buyer takes delivery of their new SUV. Could travel to Oslo on a single charge

Fisker has delivered its very first Ocean SUV to a customer in Denmark, with the firm’s eponymous boss Henrik handing over the keys in person.

Now, that may not seem all that exciting at first glance, but we’re rather interested in the Ocean given that it claims (in this launch edition Ocean One spec) a range of 440 miles and a 0-62mph time of 3.9 seconds. Impressive stats to say the least.

That range comes courtesy of a 113kWh battery, while the acceleration is thanks to a twin motor, all-wheel drive powertrain and a maximum of 556bhp.

The first customer collected their car in Copenhagen having specced ‘Great White’ exterior paint and an equally bright ‘Sea Salt’ interior with white Alcantara seats. Hope they aren’t dog owners.

Fisker Ocean Force E is hardcore 4x4 with 550bhp

Reworked electric crossover gets reinforced alloy wheels, 33in tyres, specialised dampers and interior upgrades

Fisker is developing an off-road upgrade package for its Ocean electric SUV, promising go-anywhere ability and significantly enhanced performance.

Launched with the intention of broadening the SUVs market appeal and to shake up a class that's currently dominated by combustion-engined 4x4s, Fisker promises that the Ocean Force E will perform "superbly" off-road.

To help it achieve this, Fisker has given it "substantial" ground clearance and ramp angles, both of which should help it tackle steep gradients from both the front and rear; 33in off-road tyres that sit on 20in reinforced alloy wheels; and specialised dampers.

It's based on the top-spec Ocean Extreme, which has 550bhp and can sprint from 0-62mph in 3.6sec.

Fisker hasn't disclosed the range of the Force E, but the standard Ocean offers the longest range of any electric SUV on sale, with an official WLTP-tested figure of 440 miles.

The Fisker Ocean Force E will be a 550bhp electric off-road SUV

Fancy dampers, massive tyres and lots of ground clearance for Fisker’s next e-SUV

Fresh from delivering its very first Ocean electric SUV, Fisker has revealed details of a spin-off version that’s been designed to very much not spin you off. This is your first look at the Fisker Ocean Force E.

Named like a second-rate comic book superhero team, the Force E intends to offer customers the ability to traverse all manner of terrain silently, electrically, and really very quickly. Indeed Fisker is planning on offering around 550bhp for the Ocean Force E – around what you get from the dual-motor, all-wheel-drive Ocean ‘Extreme’ SUV.

That power will be matched to a series of tweaks straight from the Beginner’s Guide To Off Roading: fancy dampers and huge amounts of ground clearance, 33-inch all-terrain tyres wrapped around 20-inch reinforced wheels, a full-length titanium underbody plate, and skid plates front and back that are fixed to the car’s structure.
There’ll be the option of rubber floor coverings for washing out mud and detritus, extra grab handles for your hands to grab, and tie-downs for tying more stuff down. A lightweight roof basket will also be another option.

Fisker Pear delayed to 2025 as start-up finalises battery supplier

Sub-£28,000 electric hatchback from American start-up is being designed for minimal complexity

The Fisker Pear will cost less than £28,000 when it's launched in the UK, founder and CEO Henrik Fisker has said – although this has been delayed to 2025.

The Pear – whose name stands for Personal Electric Automotive Revolution – will be positioned below the upcoming Fisker Ocean in the American start-up’s range and is being designed to minimise cost.

Speaking at the Financial Times Future of the Car conference, Fisker said: “Our next vehicle will start probably under £28,000, and it will be quite radical. In fact, it’s so radical that we actually have to make some new production methods.”

The Pear will use a dedicated steel chassis designed to have 25% fewer parts than a conventional platform in a process that he dubbed “steel-plus-plus”.
