New 2022 Ford Ranger Raptor brings 284bhp petrol V6 for £57,340
Hardcore version of new pick-up gets a new look inspired by the F-150 and a substantial power boost
The new version of the hardcore Ford Ranger Raptor pick-up has swapped its 2.0-litre turbo diesel engine for a substantially more powerful 3.0-litre petrol V6 and undergone a radical redesign influenced by the US-market F-150 Raptor.
Available to order now from £57,340, it is the first version of the new fourth-generation Ranger to go on sale in Europe, with deliveries getting under way in late summer. The standard Ford truck, revealed in 2021, will follow by the end of this year.
The new 3.0-litre twin-turbo petrol V6 puts out 284bhp – a 74bhp hike – and 362lb ft. Although Ford has yet to reveal performance figures, the new Raptor is expected to comfortably outpace the previous version, which needed 10.1sec to hit 62mph from rest. However, the current 2.0-litre diesel engine will also be made available in the Raptor from 2023.
A ‘race-bred’ anti-lag system, similar to that used by the Ford GT supercar and Ford Focus ST hot hatch, keeps the turbos spinning for three seconds after lift-off, to enable the driver to get back on the power sooner after coming out of a corner, for example. The turbos are also mapped to start spinning at different times in each of the automatic gearbox’s 10 ratios, in order to give the straightest acceleration curve.

VERDICT
I am now probably the biggest fan of the Ford Ranger Raptor SE. It's a bakkie that ticks all the boxes in terms of off-road capabilities, space, power and most of all, the look. In my opinion, this is the best bakkie South Africa has to offer right now. And yes, it comes with a hefty price tag but with the amount of respect the Raptor commands on our streets, it is worth it.
The Raptor SE comes with a 4-year/120 000km warranty, 3-year/unlimited distance roadside assistance and 5-year/unlimited kilometre corrosion warranty. A 6-year/90 000km service plan is included which covers six services.

Such a car is the new Ford Ranger Raptor.
It starts with the petrol 3.0-litre V6 twin turbo that’s good for 292kW and 583Nm, fitted with a new active valve twin-exhaust system and four drive modes. The valves open to change the sound of the car according to the setting and the driver’s mood.
The system can be controlled by the driver’s preference, using the ‘Exhaust Mode’ button or automatically according to the drive mode they’ve selected: Quiet, Normal, Sport or Bajai. Crank up the volume and listen to it in the video below:

The outgoing model may have had augmented engine sound piped into the cabin but its V6 powered replacement wont. The new Ranger Raptor will have adjustable exhaust noise designed for a multitude of conditions but our favourite sound has to be from the brute Baja mode!
