SA PRICING: New Ford Ranger Raptor is right on the money
The new Ford Ranger Raptor has finally arrived on our shores and the company has managed to keep it at a price lower than initially expected.
The bean counters have been hard at work to ensure that it comes in at a competitive price, keeping in mind that the Raptor – although a double-cab – stands alone in the segment in terms of what it offers.
At R1 094 900 it’s not exactly a bargain but compared to relative pricing of vehicles in South Africa, it’s right on the money.
Compare for example the price of its Wildtrak 3.0-litre V6 diesel stablemate at R953 500, and its SUV Everest Platinum cousin with the same diesel V6 engine at R1 113 100, and it’s pretty much in the ballpark.
Now imported from Thailand, there are two unique features that make it stand out from the competition, apart from the fact that the new Ford Ranger Raptor conjures up images of crazy speeds on dirt roads handled like no other bakkie on the market.
First up is the lump of metal under the bonnet. Since it was first introduced locally in 2019, we’ve always wanted more power than the 2.0-litre bi-turbo diesel with 157kW and 500Nm.
We would have been more than happy with Ford’s V6 3.0-litre diesel mill but instead the guys at Ford performance were roped in to fit their halo V6 3.0-litre twin-turbocharged petrol engine producing 292kW and 583Nm, almost doubling the power output compared with the previous model and adding an extra 83Nm of torque.

The flagship Ford Ranger Raptor has gone on sale, bringing a potent biturbo petrol V6 engine to the party. With macho looks, a new monster engine and that impressive offroad capability, expect demand to outstrip supply.
As a reminder, the outgoing Raptor is currently priced at R951 900, though that model employs a 2.0-litre twin-turbodiesel engine worth 157 kW and 500 Nm.
It uses a 3.0-litre twin-turbo petrol V6, which drives all four wheels through a 10-speed automatic transmission. Peak outputs for the new EcoBoost motor stand at a whopping 292 kW and 583 Nm. This is almost double the power offered by the diesel-powered predecessor.
The Ford Performance model’s suspension set-up includes a Watt’s link rear end and FOX 2.5-inch Live Valve Internal Bypass shock absorbers. There’s a new permanent four-wheel-drive system which has gained an electronically controlled on-demand two-speed transfer case, combined with front and rear locking differentials, while the V6 breathes out through an electronically controlled active exhaust system with modes like Quiet, Normal, Sport and Baja.

Included as standard is a four-year/120 000km warranty, four-year/unlimited distance Roadside Assistance and five-year/unlimited distance corrosion warranty. The recommended service interval is 15 000km or annually, whichever occurs first.
Customers have the option of purchasing a Ford Protect service or maintenance plans up to eight years or 165 000 km. The warranty can be extended up to seven years or 200 000 km, while the Roadside Assistance can be extended for an additional one or two years.

Long-term wrap: Ford Ranger Raptor SE was like a fortress on wheels
There are many things to say about the Ranger Raptor that we still haven’t said, but for me this was a vehicle that truly did become a companion, like a trustworthy dog that is by your side through thick and thin, good times and bad. The Raptor had my back when I needed it most. It did not disappoint, it did what it was supposed to do and it did it exceptionally well.
Sure, the new one is a jaw-dropping machine – bigger, faster and more powerful with more tech and even more capable, but this first-gen Raptor that graced us with its presence will forever have a place in our hearts.
Is it still worth consideration even though the new one is here? I think we can all agree that the answer is a resounding yes.
There are many things to say about the Ranger Raptor that we still haven’t said, but for me this was a vehicle that truly did become a companion, like a trustworthy dog that is by your side through thick and thin, good times and bad. There’s no doubt about it – the Ford Ranger Raptor is a phenomenal high-speed off-road machine with a breadth of 4×4 ability that no other bakkie (available in SA’s new-vehicle market) can match. Early on in our test drive, we named the Raptor we were driving the “Dune Destroyer”; it was – and remains – apt.
Considering the staggering performance that this vehicle offers, the starting price of R1 094 900 is relatively (again, relatively) reasonable. Bear in mind, however, that a service- or maintenance plan is an extra cost option… According to a local Ford dealer, a 4-year/60 000 km service plan costs R9 283.95, while the 6-year/90 000 km and 8-year/135 000 km ones cost R18 740.40 and R34 060.70 respectively.
We guess you could kind of compare the new (now Thai-made) Ranger Raptor with the Jeep Gladiator 3.6 Rubicon double cab (R1.3 million), but with all respect to the, um, cumbersome American offering, this particular Ford product will only truly have competition when Toyota, Isuzu or GWM decides to build a rival out of their Hilux, D-Max or P-Series. As things stand, however, the Ranger Raptor is peerless.
