SA tuner creates 'Texas Walker' upgrade for Ranger

A South African performance tuner has announced a new conversion kit for the Ford Ranger 3,2 TDCi. And it’s somewhat cringe-worthily named the “Texas Walker” package.

Steve’s Auto Clinic (SAC) says the new kit can be applied to both the pre-facelift 3,2-litre turbo-diesel and the slightly more efficient updated model. Both, of course, make the same power as standard: 147 kW and 470 N.m.

Unfortunately, the tuner makes no mention of exact peak outputs after the full kit has been fitted, instead saying only that it can be “implemented in several stages” and “holds the promise of vastly improved power and torque”.

So, what exactly does the conversion entail? First and foremost, the fitment of a Dastek Unichip Plug and Play Performance chip. SAC claims that the chip has been “comprehensively tested” on the 3,2-litre TDCi engine and “optimised” for South African driving conditions.

With just the chip fitted, SAC reckons the Ranger will make “up to 15% more power and torque”. By our maths, that would take the respective totals to around 169 kW and 540 N.m.

The next stage in the process involves the fitment of a custom-made intercooler, which SAC says just about doubles the volume of the standard unit. With this intercooler in place, a “Power Switch” option can also be added, allowing the owner to dial up the power, or choose a map that favours off-roading and towing, or even one for frugal city driving. Or, indeed, return the outputs to standard.

SAC has furthermore developed a new 76 mm performance exhaust system for the Ranger.

No word yet on pricing or performance figures. Take note, though, that such a kit would obviously void your warranty with Ford Motor Company of SA.

After announcing back in May 2016 that it would soon offer its 2,2-litre Duratorq TDCi Ranger models with the option of an automatic transmission, Ford has now released pricing.

The local arm of the automaker also says the move makes it the only manufacturer in South Africa to offer a single-cab bakkie with an automatic transmission.

But the updated Ranger line-up extends the combination of the 2,2-litre turbo-diesel engine (worth 118 kW and 385 N.m) and the six-speed automatic gearbox far further, and includes super-cab and double-cab models.

In fact, nine new derivatives enter the local Ranger range, which swells to 36 variants. Check out pricing of the new additions below…

Pricing:
Ford Ranger 2.2 TDCi single-cab XL 6AT 4X2: R311 900

I still don't get it myself. Why name your bakkie models after two types of Excel file extension.

That is because it is a template. XLT = Excel Template. You create the actual sheet off it, that being the XLS = Excel Sheet

Well that is what Ford was thinking. They decided to never ever have another Powerpoint meeting. Only Excel.
