Confirmed: Ford SA to expand Ranger line-up with another special edition Stormtrak bakkie

• Ford South Africa announced a special edition Ranger for the local market.

• Called the Stormtrak, it slots in above the Ranger Wildtrak.

• The bakkie will be available late in 2021's third quarter.

Ford has confirmed that another special edition Ranger will make its presence felt on the local market. Following on from the Ranger Thunder's local success following its debut in mid-2020, Ford South Africa has confirmed that a new model will build on that success. Called the Stormtrak, the bakkie is based on Ford's popular Wildtrak and will go on sale locally come the third quarter of 2021.

In this iteration, the Ranger Stormtrak is distinguished from the rest of the range by its unique design elements, black mesh grille with red inserts (like the Thunder), black decals on the bonnet and doors, black roof rails, and gloss black 18-inch alloy wheels.

Doreen Mashinini, General Manager for Marketing at Ford South Africa, says: "The Ranger Thunder was exceptionally well received when we launched it a year ago, proving unequivocally that there is strong demand for range-topping models that offer something different from the norm. The new Ranger Stormtrak follows the same recipe as the limited-edition Thunder by elevating the style, sophistication and exclusivity of our most luxuriously appointed model in the Ranger line-up."

Getting a bit ridiculous now! I bet they'll come up with another limited edition or 2 before we get to the end of the T6 lifecycle.

Ford Ranger Stormtrak edition confirmed for South Africa

Another month, another limited-edition Ford Ranger, it seems, and Ford South Africa has no intention of slowing down the pace as it aims to keep the current bakkie range fresh in the lead-up to next year’s all-new Ranger. The latest edition to join the family is called the Ranger Stormtrak, and it’s set to reach South African showrooms late in the third quarter of this year, with pricing to be announced nearer to the time.

Like the Thunder edition, the Ranger Stormtrak is based on the Wildtrak derivative, meaning that it will aim to bridge the gap between the latter and the hardcore Raptor variant. Setting the new edition apart is a black mesh front grille with red inserts as well as a black insert in the lower bumper, black decals on the bonnet and doors, black roof rails and gloss black 18-inch alloy wheels. You’ll also find 3D-style ‘Stormtrak’ logos on the lower front doors as well as on the tailgate.

While the Ranger Stormtrack can be ordered in Sea Grey, Frozen White and Blue Lightning exterior colours, you’re probably going to want the exclusive new hue called Lucid Red.

But there’s more to this new edition than just being flashy, as Ford has also added some practical features, such as a load bed divider kit, a drop-in bedliner, 12-volt external socket and a Power Roller Shutter.

PICS | Ford Ranger FX4 4x4 flexes some muscle in the rain

• The Ford Ranger FX4 was introduced locally at the start of 2021.

• The bakkie is powered by a 2.0-litre turbodiesel engine.

• The Ranger FX4 4x4 is priced at R704 500.

The Ford Ranger FX4 double cab came to market earlier in 2021, with a 4x4 model joining the Wheels24 test garage on an extended test in July. The bakkie is not unfamiliar to local fans, having been introduced in 2017. For Ford South Africa, the FX4 is one of the final special edition models to come off the current Ranger before an all-new model is introduced in 2022.

The Ranger FX4 slots in between the XLT and Wildtrak models in Ford's Ranger hierarchy, but adopts the single-turbo 2.0-litre diesel engine with 132kW and 420Nm on offer.

The bakkie features leather-covered seats, cruise control, a 12-volt power socket in the loading area, and FordPass Connect. The latter is Ford's newest app that owners can use to command several vehicle functions, including starting it remotely and scheduling a service.

New 2022 Ford Ranger: plug-in hybrid pick up begins testing

New version of big-selling truck looks to adopt F-150 styling cues; could pack 362bhp PHEV set-up

As part of its commitment to offer a zero-emission-capable version of its entire commercial vehicle line-up in Europe by 2024, Ford will introduce a new plug-in hybrid powertrain option for the next-generation Ranger pick up.

Due in 2023, the new Ranger looks to adopt styling cues inspired by its larger US-market sibling, the F-150, which itself is now available in all-electric 'Lightning' form. That's most evident at the front, where gaps in this prototype's camouflage expose distinctive new headlight designs, but the overall proportions and silhouette look closely matched to the current Ranger.

Little is known about the Ranger's PHEV powertrain, but Australian website CarExpert suggests it will be an electrified version of Ford's venerable 2.3-litre Ecoboost petrol engine, with electrical assistance bumping total output to some 362bhp and 502lb ft - far more than even the most potent version of the Ranger currently available.

Ford is expanding its operations in South Africa to ready its Silverton factory for production of the new Ranger and its mechanically identical Volkswagen Amarok sibling, making its largest ever investment in the country to the tune of $1.05 billion (roughly £0.77bn).

Okay, it wasn't as bad as usual, at least she didn't sing this time.

Will Ford South Africa build a Ranger hybrid for Europe?

It’s no secret that the next-generation Ford Ranger will be built in South Africa, once again for both local sales and exports. And judging by the latest evidence, which has presented itself in the form of spy pictures from Europe, a plug-in hybrid model could form part of the mix.

As reported by Carscoops, a camouflaged next-generation Ford Ranger prototype was recently spied undergoing testing in Europe, with a yellow sticker on its windscreen implying that it’s a plug-in hybrid.

Given that Europe is Ford South Africa’s biggest export market for the current Ranger, it would seem more than likely that if that market received a plug-in hybrid derivative, it would surely be built in South Africa.

Of course, the ever-tightening European Union emissions regulations mean that the days are numbered for purely internal combustion models. In fact, if Ford SA wanted to export Rangers to Europe beyond the 2030s, there would have to be a fully electric version.

As previously reported, Ford has invested R15.8 billion to build the new Ranger in South Africa, alongside the next-gen Volkswagen Amarok through a partnership between the two carmakers. This is expected to create 1200 new jobs directly as well as a further 10 000 across the supply chain.

Ford Ranger

WHAT'S THE VERDICT?

“More street savvy than most alternatives, a pick-up that can work hard, play hard and take whatever you throw at it”

The Ranger is a heartland Ford. Let the Mustang Mach-E capture the headlines, but this is still the tough, rugged activity vehicle that most buyers want. Soon, time and hybrid electric power will catch up with the Ranger, but in the meantime this diesel-only pick-up without any trace of e-assistance does the job it needs to do better than it needs to do it.

It drives with more smoothness and competence than most, if not all, rivals and can be had with a full range of driver safety aids, plus a wide range of options. It can be a farmer’s truck or a family truck, and perform convincingly in both roles. Yes, it’s big and heavy, and no, it’s not as wieldy and refined as a conventional family SUV. It’s a work truck and that means compromise is involved. But maybe not as much as you might think. It’s more street savvy than most alternatives, a pick-up that can work hard, play hard and take whatever you throw at it.

A tale of two Ford factories - and the 1800km charitable adventure between them

The current Ford Ranger, code named the T6 or PX model, has been in service since 2011. During this time the Ranger has become one of our country’s top selling bakkies, in some instances out selling the ever popular Toyota Hilux.

The Ranger has received its fair share of updates which benefited the styling, technology and the engine offerings. Now a new Ford Ranger is on the horizon and the T6 will soon be parked, but before that happens we took it for one last epic drive to explore just how this bakkie has changed over the years.

We were invited by Ford South Africa to take part in what would be an unforgettable trip through some of the most breath-taking parts of our country. It also turned out that we were the only automotive media publication invited.

Other guests included owners, Ranger club members, social media influencers and a few big shots from Ford South Africa. The purpose of the trip was to push the Rangers to their limit while sharing some of our best Ranger moments.

Our trip would see us venture from the Ford Struandale Engine Plant in Gqeberha, up towards the south western border of Lesotho, through the Drakensberg and on to the Ford Silverton plant. This near 1800km trip would see us cover various roads, terrain and weather conditions. It also happened at the same time when heavy snow was scheduled to fall in the mountains of Lesotho. This definitely would be the Ranger Life.

LETTER | 'Now this is a bakkie!' - Driving Ford's Ranger Thunder 4x4 for the first time

• Wheels24 reader Dylan Curry ventured up Matroosberg mountain when the snowfall was heavy in the Cape.

• The Ford Ranger Thunder tackled the trail with unchanged pressures in the factory-fitted tyres.

Due to the recent extreme cold weather in Cape Town, I decided that it would be fun to go and check out the snow in Ceres after being granted the opportunity at work to borrow a vehicle for a photoshoot for Barloworld Ford Tygervalley.

I've seen many people go out to Matroosberg Private Reserve, and the information was too back and forth regarding how much snow there is. However, I saw a buddy of mine's Instagram post where he paid the Merino Farm MTB and 4x4 trail a visit. It was just brilliant, so that would definitely be the destination of choice.

On the day the excursion would occur, a colleague and I, along with our better halves, hit the road from Cape Town to Ceres. Getting up at 04:00 in the morning was not something I was looking forward to, but I knew it had to be done. At 06:00, we hit the road in the Ford Ranger Thunder, but outside it was a chilly affair.

FLEET UPDATE: Ford Ranger FX4 excels on all roads

The light truck segment - commonly known as bakkie to South Africans - has become one of the most congested and competitive in the motor industry.

New products and revamped models are flooding the market each month within this segment, with manufacturers vying for the attention of the consumer.

It therefore takes a special “animal” to capture the attention of the market - and one such animal is the new Ford Ranger FX4.

Produced in Pretoria, it carries the badge that was first introduced on Ranger in South Africa in 2017 as a limited series.
