Ford is going all out to maximise the current Ranger model as the brand prepares to introduce an all-new Ranger in 2022 which will be built right here in SA at the firm’s Silverton production facility. This is also where Ford is expected to build the next Volkswagen Amarok, or AmaRanger…

Much like the Ranger Thunder which came to market last year, the Ranger Stormtrak builds on the Ranger Wildtrak and gains its own set of eye-catching styling features.

The Ranger Stormtrak will be offered with 18-inch gloss black alloy wheels, a black mesh grille with red inserts, black lower bumper section, black 3D Stormtrack decals seen on the bonnet and doors and black roof rails. The limited-edition Ranger Stormtrak also features obligatory ‘Stormtrak’ badges found on the lower door sections and on the tailgate.

Yes, this is yet another special edition Ranger from Ford and it’s called the Ranger Splash.

If you are a Ford Ranger fan, you are well and truly spoilt for choice. It seems a new Ranger derivative is introduced almost every month and the latest special edition is this Ranger Splash!

The latest iteration of the Ranger is reaching the end of its product lifecycle with an all-new Ranger due to be built locally at Ford’s Silverton production facility in 2022. The new Ford Ranger will also form the basis for the next-generation Amarok which will also be built in South Africa.

Ford is making the most of the current Ranger by offering a number of tastefully detailed Rangers.

The South African market recently saw the introduction of the Ford Ranger Thunder and the Ranger Stormtrak is due very soon.

Next-gen Ford Ranger to “surpass the quality of the current generation”

Production for the next-generation SA-built Ford Ranger will be commencing in due time. With this, the South African arm of the American brand will be making extensive revisions to the Silverton Assembly Plant in an attempt to create a final product that hopes to improve on the success of the current generation.

In order to accommodate the next-generation Ford Ranger, the Silverton plant will be implementing a third shift which falls part of its R15 billion investment that was announced in February this year. The goal of the upgrades to this plant will to improve efficiency and quality while meeting an increased volume target of 200 000 units per year.

The Silverton Plant experienced a seven-week plant shutdown to facilitate the installation of new upgrades. This included a complete redesign of the vehicle plant layout with the removal of 1 km of vehicle movements. The benefits of this alteration are reduced driving of vehicles and movements of people in the plant. All manufacturing processes and quality checks are also now completed in each assembly zone. This results in a lower risk of vehicle damage.

The next-generation Ford Ranger will also benefit from a new high-tech skillet system that is currently being used in the Thai Ranger and US F-150 plant. Thanks to it being height-adjustable, the new system eliminates having to station employees at different levels and caters to workers of different heights. The new piece of equipment is also more ergonomic and boasts enhanced safety to the employee.

New Ford Ranger teased ahead of 2022 launch​

Following many spy pictures and numerous speculation we now get the first official glimpse of the new Ford Ranger being endurance tested in various locations before its launch in 2022.
Ford South Africa promises that the new-generation bakkie will be the toughest, most capable and connected Ranger yet.

The new Ford Ranger is set to be revealed later this year and although the carmaker hasn’t released any further information at this stage, the engine details have apparently been leaked by international media.

According to CarExpert, the 2022 Ford Ranger is set to receive a new 3-litre V6 turbodiesel engine, likely with outputs of around 186kW and 600Nm. Lower down in the range, the current 2-litre single-turbo and twin-turbo engines are expected to carry over, given that they are still very modern, while the 3.2-litre engine looks poised for retirement. A hybrid is said to be on the cards too. Keep in mind, however, that none of this has been officially confirmed by Ford.

Fourth-gen pick-up will be unwrapped this year before going on sale with Volkswagen Amarok twin in 2022

Ford has released the first official images and footage of the forthcoming Ranger pick-up set to be unveiled later this year.

The fourth-generation Ranger will go on sale next year and replace the highly successful current model, which cemented itself as the UK’s best-selling-pick-up truck shortly after the third generation went on sale in 2011.

The first pictures of the new Ranger are accompanied by a teaser video (below) promising even more performance on mud, grit, rock and snow. Footage shows the pick-up drifting over various terrains while testing in Australia and New Zealand, alongside details of the various testing phases: "Making sure everything works when it’s full of mud", “Punishing the powertrain in the desert” and “Torture testing when the going gets tough”.

Ford South Africa is gearing up for the local production and introduction of a new Ford Ranger but that hasn’t stopped the firm from making the most of the current Ranger. In recent months, Ford has expanded the Ranger lineup with new special edition derivatives such as the Ranger FX4, Ranger Thunder and the soon-to-be-launched Ranger Stormtrak. But that’s not all, we might even see the Ranger Splash on local soil too!

The current-generation Ford Ranger is celebrating its 10 year anniversary this year and since its introduction in 2011, more than 732 000 Rangers have been produced at Ford’s Silverton production facility in Pretoria, Gauteng. More so, this month, Ford also achieved a major export milestone with the 500 000th Ranger destined for export rolling off the production line.

Ford Motor Company celebrates 500 000th locally built Ranger

2021 marks the Ford Ranger’s 10th anniversary since production in South Africa started in 2011 with the Ford Silverton Assembly plant in Pretoria having just assembled the 500 000th Ranger for export.

With a total investment of more than R11 billion between 2009 and 2018, over 732 000 current-generation Rangers have been produced in South Africa for both domestic and export customers.

An important contributor to the success and growth of the domestic automotive industry and the economy as a whole, the Ford Ranger has gone on to become one of South Africa’s best-selling vehicles. Following a further $1,05 billion investment announced in February 2021, Ford’s commitment to South Africa is reaffirmed with even more jobs on the cards in addition to the 4 300 people that FMCSA employs and the 50 000 jobs the company supports in the total value chain.

Neale Hill, Managing Director of Ford South Africa said, “The launch of the new Ford Ranger in 2011 was a watershed moment for Ford South Africa, for the domestic market and the broader pickup segment internationally.”

Ongoing investment in Ford’s local operations saw production capacity upped from 110 000 vehicles per annum to 168 000 units by 2018. Over this period, R11 billion was invested into FMCSA’s manufacturing plants, thus allowing for the launch of the Ford Ranger Raptor as well as increased production volumes across the Ranger range.

One new Ford Ranger every two minutes will be possible at upgraded SA plant​

Ford South Africa announced this week an incremental increase of around 1200 jobs with the addition of a third shift at its Silverton plant in Pretoria.

This forms part of the almost R15-billion investment in the plant announced earlier.

The local workforce has increased from 4200 Ford employees to approximately 5000, along with an additional 440 jobs at the plant’s on-site service provider with 850 people employed at the Struandale Engine Plant in Gqeberha.

The bigger capacity will enable increased production capability for the next generationRanger next year.

“Our key objectives with the investment in the Silverton Assembly Plant and our supplier facilities are to expand our production capacity and to introduce the most advanced technologies and systems as we modernise our manufacturing operations to bring them in line with the best in the world,” said Ockert Berry, VP Operations at Ford South Africa.

With the third shift, the plant will be capable of producing up to 720 vehicles per day, or 240 units per shift – which equates to one new Ranger coming off the line every two minutes. Two-thirds of the Rangers produced are exported to more than 100 global markets, including Europe where it is the top selling pickup. The balance is sold in South Africa, regularly achieving overall top-three sales.

The special edition Ford Ranger Stormtrak has landed in South Africa as a new flagship offering for the double-cab bakkie range. The new example boasts some styling enhancements and a preferable list of standard features.

With a price tag of R846 500, the Ford Ranger Stormtrak comes standard with 18-inch black alloy wheels, tyre pressure monitoring system, auto on LED headlamps and DRLs, a black mesh grille with red inserts, custom decals, a power roller shutter, sports bar, black roof rails, bed divider for the load box, a tow bar and an illuminated set of front scuff plates.

For added safety, the Ford Ranger Stormtrak also adds seven airbags, electronic brake assist, hill launch assist and descent control, roll-over mitigation, adaptive load and trailer sway control, ISOFIX anchor points and front and rear parking sensors with a rear-view camera.

Comfort features included in the Ford Ranger Stormtrak package consist of keyless entry with push start, lane keep assist, adaptive cruise control with autonomous braking, dual-zone climate control, an 8,0-inch touchscreen infotainment system with two USB parts, a 230V power converter, four 12V power points, rain sensing wipers, electronically folding mirrors with puddle lamps and an electrochromatic rear view mirror. The seats are also covered with black leather that is contrasted by red stitching. Further additions to the cabin include a soft-feel dashboard and ambient lighting.

The Stormtrack is based on the Wildtrack model, and it slots between that and the Raptor. Priced at R790 300 in 4x2 guise and R846 500 as a 4x4, the Ford Ranger Stormtrack models command a R40 000 premium over the equivalent Wildtrack derivatives, but the newcomer still costs R73 800 less than the Raptor.

There is quite a lot of kit to justify the Stormtrack’s price premium over the Wildtrack, including a unique exterior design package and a Power Roller Shutter with an adjustable bed divider. The drop-in bedliner also incorporates a 12-volt socket that can be used for powering accessories such as a camping fridge.

R2.6m hydrogen-powered Ford Ranger announced down under

R2.65-million is perhaps a bit more than you’d expect to pay for a Ford Ranger, but the H2X Warrego Ute is no ordinary bakkie.

It is the creation of Australian start-up H2X and although it’s based around the basic platform and shell of the Ford Ranger, the Warrego Ute has a completely unique hydrogen fuel cell powertrain.

Set to be a global offering, the H2X Warrego will be fully revealed in November this year, before going on sale in April 2022. Base models reportedly sell for 189 000 Australian dollars (R2-million) while flagships will stretch to $250 000 (R2.65-million).

Although the vehicle is dependent on hydrogen refuelling infrastructure (which is sorely lacking in many countries, such as South Africa), owners can look forward to a range of 500km between refuels. And unlike electric cars, with their extensive recharge waiting periods, hydrogen cars can be refuelled in just 3 to 5 minutes. The fuel cell uses a chemical reaction to convert the hydrogen into electricity.

The H2X Warrego is powered by a 200kW electric motor, fed by fuel cells that are available in 66kW and 90kW guises, and super capacitor units are also available, the company says.

H2X says the Warrego will offer a one-tonne payload and a towing capacity of 2.5-tonnes.

With this solution, H2X wants to dispel the notion that ‘green’ solutions can’t compete with diesel when it comes to practicality of use. “We believe we are the first Australian company to produce a commercially viable vehicle to meet those demands,” said company founder Brendan Norman.

Three days and more than 1 000km later, Ford South Africa took on an interesting approach in launching its new Ranger Stormtrak to the local market. Taking place in the Eastern Cape, the area covering the Baviaanskloof - and parts of the Karoo stretching from Steytlerville and Cookhouse - formed the launch route and threw every possible daunting challenge at the bakkie. From adverse weather to corroding road conditions, the new Ranger Stormtrak's mettle was tested.

For Ford SA, though, this was an important event because bakkies like the Stormtrak are the closing chapters for one of its most important vehicles yet. The current Ranger has been in production since 2011, surpassing milestone after milestone as the years went on. Last year, for instance, Ford launched the new Ranger Thunder in the market. An initial production run of 1 000 units were planned, but the automaker ended up producing more than 2 000 units at its assembly plant in Silverton, Pretoria, for South African buyers.

As the Ford SA team explained, local buyers are looking for unique bakkies, hence opting to bring special edition models to market. At the end of the day, they see customer needs, which is why something like the Ranger Stormtrak could not be passed up on.

Ford Ranger Stormtrak (2021) Launch Review

The best way to test any 4×4 is to pull up your sleeves and get it dirty – real dirty. Ford recently launched the limited-edition Ranger Stormtrak in South Africa and we took the newcomer on a 1 000-km off-road adventure in the Eastern Cape. Cars.co.za journalist Gero Lilleike reports back from somewhere in the Karoo…

So, what makes the Ranger Stormtrak special?

The Ranger Stormtrak is based on the Wildtrak derivative and slots in just above the Ranger Thunder. Apart from its name and a few styling details such as its black mesh grille, with matching decals and accents, 3D-effect Stormtrak badges and red contrast stitching on the leather upholstery (to name a few embellishments), the biggest difference is the inclusion of an electronically operated roller shutter, as well as a load bin divider that adds useful practicality to the overall package.

Moreover, the Lucid Red body colour is exclusively available for the Ranger Stormtrak (it looks fantastic in the metal) in addition to other colours such as Sea Grey, Frozen White and Blue Lightning. Conveniently, the power roller shutter can be operated using a button in the load bin, the bakkie’s key fob or the switch panel on the inside of the driver’s door.

Perched at the pinnacle of the Ranger lineup, the Ranger Stormtrak comes well-equipped with features, including Ford’s SYNC3 infotainment system with integrated navigation and Apple CarPlay and Android Auto compatibility, as well as nice-to-have features such as heated seats and adaptive cruise control with forward-collision alert.

Safety in the Ranger Stormtrak is another highlight with features such as lane-keeping alert, lane-keeping assist, a driver alert system, autonomous emergency braking and even semi-automatic parallel park assist, the latter of which takes the stress out of executing those tricky parallel parking manoeuvres with this sizeable bakkie.
