Double-cab bakkies are, it seems, all the rage. Heck, even Mercedes-Benz is in the process of building one (albeit based on the Nissan Navara).

Massive fuel bills, however, are not all the rage. So, we decided to take a look at the current crop of double-cab bakkies on the South African market and pick out the most fuel-efficient of them all.

Take note, of course, that this list is based on claimed combined fuel economy, and you’re highly unlikely to match these figures in the real world. Now that the disclaimer is out of the way, let’s have a look at the seven double-cabs that are ostensibly the lightest on diesel…

1. Ford Ranger 2,2 (various): 6,9 L/100 km

The most frugal double-cab on SA’s new vehicle market is the Ranger equipped with Ford’s 2,2-litre turbodiesel engine, mated to a manual gearbox (automatic models come in with a still-impressive claim of 7,5 L/100 km). Interestingly, this 118 kW/385 N.m mill is said to return the same consumption figure regardless of whether it is linked to the rear wheels only or to all four corners…

For the second successive month the Ford Ranger outsold the Toyota Hilux.

In October 2016, the difference in units sold between the two bakkie was fewer than 300 units. In November however, that figure has increased to 1188 units.

Ford sold 3680 Rangers compared to Toyota's selling 2492 units of its Hilux.

The Nissan Hardbody had a solid month, leaping into third place with 1493 units - outselling both NP200, its stablemate, and the Isuzu KB.

Mahindra again brings up the rear with its Scorpio and Bolero showing consistent sales figures, with 73 and 68 units respectively.

Signs of hope

The National Association of Automobile Manufacturers of South Africa (Naamsa) commented that conditions in the new vehicle market has remained extremely challenging characterised by double digit year on year declines in most segments, with the exception of the light commercial vehicle segment.

Domestic sales of industry new light commercial vehicles, bakkies and mini buses at 15 632 units during November 2016 reflected a noteworthy increase of 148 units or an improvement of 1% compared to the 15 484 light commercial vehicles sold during the corresponding month last year.

Ford in drive to boost exports

The Ford Motor Company is considering investing further in its plant in Silverton in Pretoria to increase its production capacity to take advantage of new export opportunities for the Ford Ranger.
Jeff Nemeth, the president and chief executive of Ford’s sub-Saharan Africa region, said on Tuesday that the Ranger continued to have a global footprint that exceeded expectations and the Ford Motor Company was continually talking to them about its capacity and opportunities to take on more export markets.

“There may be something that happens next year or maybe not. It depends on what the global Ranger footprint is like and what it costs to put more capacity into South Africa compared with Argentina.

“We are working through all of those (issues) and hopefully I will be able to announce something next year around higher exports,” he said.

Good news

Nemeth said exports of the Ford Everest would come on line for the full year next year compared with a few months this year. “So it’s all really good news for exports from us.”

The Ford Motor Company of Southern Africa has in the first 11 months of this year exported 48 597 vehicles, of which 48 590 were Ranger models and seven Everest units.

Everest exports only started last month.

The Ranger units produced in South Africa are exported to 148 markets globally.

They can invest the money they saved by closing down shop in AUS.

They also need to start making that 4L engine again, which was made in AUS. Would love to see the ranger with a 4L engine!
 
Multiple MotoGP world champion Valentino Rossi has never had a problem slapping his famous name (and racing number) on all manner of merchandise. The latest in a long line of no-doubt-profitable endorsements? A modified Ford Ranger.

Well, actually 460 of them, since the VR46 Ranger is limited to that number in mainland Europe and the United Kingdom (interestingly, there’s also a VR46 Transit on offer, which you can see in the Facebook-hosted video below).

The Ranger, in 3,2-litre double-cab 4×4 flavour, has been customised in terms of both design and off-road capability. It gains 18-inch black alloys wrapped in BF Goodrich all-terrain rubber, a stainless steel dual-exit sports exhaust system and off-road suspension (apparently raised by around 45 mm).

And, as we’re sure you have by now noticed, the VR46-branded bakkie also features all manner of styling updates, including new front and rear bumpers, interesting headlights, a bonnet bra, significantly widened wheel-arches, a roof-mounted off-road light, satin-black side-bars, a roll-over bar, a spring-loaded and damped tailgate function, tail-light guards and a sump guard. Oh, and plenty of VR46 graphics…

Inside, you’ll find Nappa leather trim, a unique plaque, a sports steering wheel, rubber mats, special sill covers and yet more graphics (this time applied to the dashboard).

No word on exactly how much this conversion costs, but we’re sure there are plenty of Rossi fans out there prepared to cough up, whatever the asking price…
