Ford's Ranger Raptor bakkie headed for SA!

Ford has announced on Thursday (September 7) that its hugely popular Ranger bakkie will be available in an off-road performance variant for the first time.

The purpose-built, desert-racing inspired bakkie joins the Ford Performance family, as the new ‘Ranger Raptor’, says the automaker.

Ford SA says: "The Ranger Raptor will be coming to South Africa, with further information to be revealed in due course."

"Designed and engineered to deliver an adrenaline pumping experience, Ford Ranger Raptor sports a head-turning exterior look that exudes toughness as well as a level of capability and off-road performance never before seen in the mid-size bakkie segment.

"Sharing the same nomenclature as the F-150 Raptor, the world’s most extreme production bakkie, Ranger Raptor is in a class of its own among mid-size off-road performance vehicles."

The automaker says: "Building on the success of the class-leading Ford Ranger, one of the best-selling bakkies in a number of markets, Ranger Raptor brings the thrilling off-road performance capabilities of the ‘Raptor’ to the Ranger for the first time ever, claims Ford.

Jamal Hameedi, chief engineer, Ford Performance, says: "Combining the Raptor’s advanced off-road capabilities with the versatility of the Ranger is a significant accomplishment for Ford’s world-class engineering and design teams."

Ranger Raptor joins F-150 Raptor to extend the globally renowned Ford Performance DNA, complementing the on-road high performance lineup of Ford GT, Ford Mustang Shelby, Focus RS, Focus ST and Fiesta ST.

Heyyyy!!

Ford Confirms Ranger Raptor Bakkie (Video)

Ford South Africa has done it! Confirmation of a high-performance Raptor Ranger bakkie landed this morning and there's a teaser video

The announcement came from Ford South Africa's social media channels and other than this video, we don't have much to go on. We can speculate, of course, and given how hard the test mule is being pushed in the video, we predict that it'll have beefier suspension and be just as capable in an off-road environment. There's no word on the powerplant, but if we go by the audio in this video, we suspect a V6 is under the bonnet. Sadly it's not the V8 we were all secretly praying for, but let's wait for the official details.

Wonder if it will have 3.5L V6 ecoboost from the F150, that would be a very nice to see locally.

Official: Ford Ranger Raptor coming to SA

After several rumours, the wraps have finally come off the Ford Ranger Raptor double-cab super bakkie developed by Ford Performance. Along with this is also news that it is coming to South Africa… eventually.

Ford’s popular double-cab will now have a desert-racing inspired performance derivative much like its American cousin, the Ford F-150 Raptor. Despite being camouflaged in these images, its clear that this particular Ranger has a far more muscular appearance than the standard double cab and will sport an aggressive, head-turning appearance not that F-150 Raptor. It will have an appearance that Ford claims will be unique to the mid-size bakkie segment.

Beyond this short announcement, there are no further technical details and one can assume the double cab is based on the Ranger platform rather than its bigger American cousin. Regarding powetrains, it is rumoured that two powertrains are being developed, although it’s not yet clear whether both will be offered in a single market.

Reports out of Australia suggest that the Ranger Raptor will be offered with a version of the F-150 Raptor’s 331 kW 3,5-litre turbocharged petrol EcoBoost V6. But that the hottest Ranger is also being developed with an oil-burner, most likely taking the form of a higher-output version of the 3,2-litre five-pot already employed by the big bakkie.

The reports add that, regardless of engine, the Ranger Raptor will use a new ten-speed automatic transmission that the Blue Oval firm has co-developed with General Motors.

“Combining the Raptor’s advanced off-road capabilities with the versatility of the Ranger is a significant accomplishment for Ford’s world-class engineering and design teams,” said Jamal Hameedi, chief engineer, Ford Performance.

The Ford Ranger Raptor will be manufactured in Thailand and the date of its international launch in 2018 is yet to be confirmed. Before you get too excited though, it appears unlikely Ford will bring the super bakkie to the South African market before 2019…

Ford's hot new Ranger Raptor is SA bound!

Ford Performance has announced the first off-road performance version of its Ranger one-tonner and though we don't get to see it in the flesh just yet, the company has released a few teaser images of the ferocious new bakkie in disguised prototype form.

Inspired by desert races such as the Baja 1000, it’s called the Ranger Raptor (if it’s anything like the severely attitudinous F-150 Raptor with which it shares the name that’s not a bad thing) and it will be coming to South Africa in due course - expect more information closer to the time.

Ford has revealed no engine or drivetrain details, quoting merely “a level of capability and off-road performance never before seen in the mid-size bakkie segment”, but the video, shot during testing in the Australian outback, briefly shows its multi-link independent rear suspension in place of the standard model’s live axle, longer coilover shocks and chunky all-terrain tyres, giving it a significantly increased ground clearance.

Speculation in the cybergarage is that it will have the same 336kW/690Nm, 3.5-litre turbopetrol V6 as the F-150 Raptor (and the GT supercar!) but that may be wishful thinking, as a test mule spied on the road on the United States was running what sounded like a diesel engine - presumably a tweaked version of the 147kW/470Nm 3.2-litre five-cylinder turbo that tops the Ranger line-up here and elsewhere.

Either way, expect to see Ford’s new joint-venture (with GM) 10-speed automatic transmission pushing all four wheels via a rear-biased split.

They need to get that turbopetrol V6 into this Raptor, THEN it will be worthy. I'm afraid, while a brilliant engine, the 3.2 5 cylinder will not cut it for this application.

New Nissan Navara vs Ford Ranger Fx4 - Head-to-head Part 2 - Cars.co.za

New Nissan Navara vs Ford Ranger FX-4 head-to-head Part 1 - Cars.co.za

I was surprised to see how much more the Navara's rear suspension compressed compared to the Ranger, considering the Navara is load rated for slightly more kg's...

That Nissan head unit is a joke in this price range. It's like they popped into Autostyling and purchased a double din to add in during PDI. Sync 3 in the Ranger is superb and I cannot fault it in any way.

Bakkie Comparison: Nissan Navara vs Ford Ranger Fx4

Price and Warranty

The Ford Ranger 3.2 4x4 Fx4 automatic is priced at R608 900 and is sold with a 4-year/120 000km warranty and a 5-year/100 000km service plan. Service intervals are set at 20 000km.

The Nissan Navara 2.3 4x4 LE automatic is more affordably priced at R587 900 and is sold with a 6-year/150 000 km warranty and 3-year/90 000km service plan. Service intervals are set at 15 000km. If you opt for leather upholstery, which includes heated front seats the price comes to

Verdict

We would buy the Ranger Fx4, but the Navara's 6-year/150 000km warranty can swing the buying vote.

Although these double-cab bakkies are closely matched in terms of specification and both offer impressive overall capability, we are of the opinion that the Ford Ranger 3.2 Fx4 4x4 automatic is the better buy compared with the Nissan Navara 2.3 4x4 LE automatic and here's why:

We feel that the combination of the Ranger Fx4’s added exterior visual appeal, better interior execution (not to mention slicker Sync 3 infotainment system) and overall packaging, justifies the R11k premium over its Japanese rival. Even though the Ranger is thirstier, its engine is quieter at high revs and its power delivery feels more linear than that of the Navara. The Navara, as specified, claws back with its seat warmers and the convenience of an electric driver's seat. It also has a longer warranty.

Furthermore, in terms of off-road ability, there is very little that separates these vehicles. For buyers who will be loading up their bakkies regularly, the Ranger (according to our test) delivers a more composed ride under heavy load. As urban-based family vehicles, however, both bakkies offer admirable ride quality on tar and although the Navara may hold a slight edge in this regard (rear passengers will especially appreciate the added ride comfort) it is a testament to the Ford's resolved design (its on-road refinement is still impressive) that despite the age disadvantage of the Ranger platform, the newer Nissan cannot eclipse the all-round abilities of the venerable Ford.
