Ford South Africa expands production at Silverton and Struandale

With global demand for the Ranger double cab, Ranger Raptor extreme bakkie and Everest SUV increasing, Ford South Africa has finalised a comprehensive expansion (announced in 2017 as a R3 billion venture) of both its Silverton vehicle assembly plant in Pretoria and the Struandale engine plant in Port Elizabeth.

With these upgrades, Ford South Africa will aim to produce 168 000 Rangers and Everests per year; up from 44 000 before the expansion and 58 000 since 2011.

“Our Ranger programme has been extremely successful, and we produced our 500 000th unit in August last year,” says Neale Hill, MD of Ford Motor Company of Southern Africa. “The global demand for the Ranger continues to grow, and the R3-billion additional investment into our local operations has enabled us to prepare for an even more exciting and dynamic period ahead,”

Ford Ranger bakkie: US-spec model undergoes crash test

The
Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS) in North America has put the US-spec Ford Ranger through its standard crash-test procedure, handing the bakkie “good” ratings in all but one of its series of crashworthiness evaluations.

Interestingly, the model tested was a “crew cab” (badged as the “SuperCrew” in the US) variant. It earned a “superior” rating for its front crash prevention, although a “marginal” headlight rating kept it from qualifying for the institute’s so-called “Top Safety Pick” award.

The Ranger earned “good” ratings in five crashworthiness evaluations: the driver-side small overlap front, moderate overlap front, side, roof strength and head restraint tests.

It earned an “acceptable” rating in the passenger-side small overlap front test. In the latter evaluation, the passenger's survival space was maintained "reasonably well", but forces on the right lower leg indicated a "risk of injury".

The Ford Ranger's Crash Protection Is Fine but Its Headlights Aren't: IIHS

The Ford Ranger returned to America for the 2019 model year, a move that got high ratings from anyone and everyone who appreciated the Ranger back when it was Ford’s bare-bones truck offering stateside. It now has high safety ratings as well, aside from those pesky headlights.

The Ranger, Ford’s midsize pickup in a world where all pickups have become, well, gigantic, gives buyers the option for something slightly less gigantic. But while it did well in most of its crash tests upon reentering the American market, not all of its safety testing and ratings went as smoothly.

The Insurance Institute for Highway Safety announced its ratings for the Ranger last week, which the institute said were good but not award winning. It got green markings almost all the way down the list of grades on its crash tests and safety evaluations, showing that it got IIHS’ highest of four scores, “good.” But what kept it from getting any awards were its headlights, which kind of help to prevent crashes in the first place.

I concur. After a 3am blast through the Transkei last Friday, I was a nervous wreck as I just couldn't see properly. Time to invest in spotsnor a light bar

The Ford Ranger 2.0 4x4 XLT Automatic is priced from R582 700 (July 2019) and is sold with a 4-year/120 000 km warranty and 6-year/90 000 km service plan.

Verdict

At its price point, the Ford Ranger 2.0 (Turbo) 4x4 XLT automatic represents excellent value. Not only does it deliver impressive engine/transmission performance, but the purchasing proposition is sweetened by a healthy dose of standard features. The Ranger’s off-road ability remains formidable and we think this derivative is easy-to-recommend based on the merits outlined in this review; a 6-year/120 000 km warranty is the cherry on top.

It’s worth mentioning that this 2.0 4x4 XLT Automatic derivative bested the pricier Toyota Hilux 2.8 GD-6 Raider in terms of value-for-money in our recent comparative review. While this particular review is mostly positive, it remains to be seen how this pair of new 2.0-litre turbodiesel powerplants will hold up in terms of long-term reliability (Ford has conducted 6-million kilometres of testing on the motors to address reliability concerns).

It bears mentioning that, according to recent data from the Cars.co.za Ownership Satisfaction survey (in conjunction with Lightstone Auto), which incorporates feedback from thousands of South African vehicle owners who have bought and serviced their vehicles through manufacturer- and importer-franchised dealers, Ford has not been among the top brands in terms of after-sales support, service to customers and product reliability.

Nonetheless, with all factors considered, this Ranger, as a product, warrants its place near the top of your double-cab bakkie shopping list.

Baby Ranger? Ford teases small bakkie, ‘will meet unmet need’

Ford Motor Company has released a teaser video showcasing what is possibly an upcoming small bakkie.

“Some super cool truck news coming this week. Will meet a huge unmet need,” Mike Levine, product communications manager of Ford North America, tweeted. “If you like small trucks you won’t be disappointed,” Levine added.

Ford SA adds extra shift to 'meet growing demand for Ranger' bakkies

The local arm of Ford Motor Company has announced that it will introduce a third shift to the production line at its Silverton Assembly plant in Pretoria to “meet the growing international and local demand” for its Ranger and Ranger Raptor bakkies, plus the Everest SUV.

According to the firm, the extra shift, which will commence in August 2019, will create an additional 1 200 jobs, increasing Ford Motor Company South Africa’s total contingent to “approximately” 5 500 employees.

GFV deals are great for business but if buying in personal capacity I'd weigh up the pro's and con's carefully. The 20k per annum mileage limit is fine, and the interest rate is good, but I don't know if I could just hand back a vehicle I had paid R375k on. The other option of refinancing is a bit daunting when only 1yr of the warranty is left.

Each to their own I suppose.
 
Beefed-up bakkie! Ford Ranger double-cab handed bold bodykit

Standard Ford Ranger bakkie look a little tame to you? Well, Urban Automotive has a solution. The UK-based tuner, better known for modifying Range Rovers, has turned its attention to the double-cab variant of the bakkie, revealing the “Urban Ranger” with a handful of brawny exterior updates.

The most notable additions to this beefed-up Ranger double-cab are the mesh-design front grille, replete with an Urban Automotive crest; and the extended wheel arches, which give the pick-up an imposing stance. Sited beneath the latter items are satin black 18-inch “Muscle” wheels, which are wrapped in BF Goodrich all-terrain tyres.

Ford Ranger FX2 Package

Ford is introducing the new Ranger FX2 Package as another choice for customers who want off-road styling and capability in a two-wheel-drive offering.

"FX2 expands Ranger's options for customers who want tough, off-road style with the functionality of a locking differential but don't need four-wheel drive," said Brian Bell, Ford Ranger marketing manager. "This is another way our customers can personalize Ranger to match their lifestyle while getting a great value."

Aimed at more urban markets, the FX2 Package rides on 17- or available 18-inch off-road tires to add even tougher styling to two-wheel-drive Ranger. A front underbody guard and air dam-delete provide even more distinction, while shielding the underbody and improving approach angles.

Adding to Ford Ranger's two-wheel-drive capability, the FX2 Package includes an electronic-locking rear differential and off-road-tuned suspension for increased traction and performance off-road. Ford's off-road cluster screen adds to the FX2 experience inside, where drivers can see pitch, roll and yaw in real time.

US-spec Ford Ranger 4x2 derivatives gain new FX2 package

Ford in the United States has introduced a new FX2 package for 4x2 derivatives, adding what the Blue Oval brand describes as “off-road styling and capability”.

The FX2 package includes 17-inch (or optionally an inch larger) off-road tyres along with a front underbody guard and an air dam delete (the latter ostensibly improving the approach angle).

An electronic-locking rear differential and “off-road-tuned suspension” are also included the package, as is an off-road cluster screen displaying pitch, roll and yaw in real time.

Of course, the Ranger offered in North America is a little different (chiefly under the bonnet) to the one built here in South Africa. Indeed, the US-spec model draws its urge from the automaker’s turbocharged 2,3-litre petrol engine, mated with a ten-speed automatic transmission and offering 201 kW and 420 N.m.

Ford FX2 is a Tougher RWD Ranger

FX2 is the Ranger for those who don't always need a front differential but venture into testing terrain.

Ford’s reintroduction of the Ranger bakkie to its home market has been met with strong approval and demand.

Buyers in the world’s biggest bakkie market, especially those who live in American cities, are finding value and better utility in the Ranger’s more manageable size and ease of parking.

But what does it mean for the rest of us? Well, the possibility that American demand and sales numbers could justify a spate of new Ranger derivates. And the first of these is the FX2.

South African followers of the Ranger nameplate will be familiar with Ford’s Fx4 bakkie branding: essentially a value package Ranger XLT. With FX2, Ford is offering its American Ranger buyers a rear-wheel-drive bakkie with better tyres and trail driving ability.

The FX2 package can be added to any Ranger model and for an equivalent of R9 000 and you get a lot of additional kit: an electronic locking rear differential, off-road-tuned suspension, grippier high-volume tyres, a front underbody guard and Ford’s off-road screen display function in the FX2’s instrumentation cluster. The latter offers digital vehicle pitch and roll icons, allowing a driver to see when the FX2 is approaching its balance limits off-road.

Ford Reveals 2020 Ranger Upgrades

Hopefully, these upgrades are coming to local Rangers soon...

Ford has responded to customer feedback from Australian bakkie buyers and will execute some small upgrades to the facelifted Ranger.

With the South African and Australian bakkie markets being so similar, what happens in Australia is usually repeated locally within a few months.

So what are the Australian Ford Rangers getting? Well, from the outside, not much. On Wildtrak models there is a new 6-spoke alloy wheel design and redesigned Bi-LED headlights – which improve both illumination and appearance.

The Wildtrak’s loadbox shutter cover is now power-operated and can be controlled remotely via the key fob or a cabin switch. This is a notable improvement over the current manually operated cover and will greatly increase ownership convenience, especially if you are in a hurry and stopping to buy a load of braai wood next to the road.

Inside, the 2020 model-year Ranger upgrades tally Ford’s latest 8-inch SYNC3 touchscreen infotainment systems, featuring both Apple CarPlay and Android Auto. Ford has also added a USB port in the roof console, behind the rear-view mirror, to power dashcams.
