New 2022 Ford Ranger: plug-in hybrid pick-up tested off-road

Updated hybrid Ranger tested in extreme environments including desert and rugged off-road terrains

The new hybrid-powered Ford Ranger has undergone tests in extreme off-road environments ahead of its launch in 2023.

Ford says the heavily updated pick-up truck has covered around 6213 miles (10,000km) of desert driving, 776,714 miles (1,250,000km) of customer driving and 388,357 miles (625,000km of rugged off-road durability testing, all with a maximum load capacity.

The Ranger has also undergone “thousands of hours” of computer and real-world simulations covering aerodynamics and the durability of components and structures.

“It’s important that our customers are able to rely on the Ranger to deliver years of dependable service,” said Ranger chief program engineer John Willems. “So we’ve gone to great lengths to subject the next-gen Ranger to extreme tests – stressing it much more than a typical consumer would – to help ensure it's ready to face everything life throws at it.

“Whether it’s tackling muddy bush tracks, coping with the rigours of extreme tropical weather, towing over Alpine passes or enduring temperatures of more than 50deg C, the Ranger has to do it all.”

New Ford Ranger likely to stick around for a decade

The highly anticipated new Ford Ranger is set to go on sale in South Africa and other international markets in 2022, but word on the street is that it could stick around until at least the early 2030s.
Citing insider information, CarBuzz says that the US-spec Ford Ranger will have an eight-year lifecycle, running from 2023 until early 2031.

Although that does not necessarily mean that the global version of the Ranger (as sold in SA) will have a similar lifespan, it is likely given that the vehicle is expected to share its basic architecture with the US version.

Long life spans are not unusual in the bakkie world, with the current Ford Ranger having been launched in SA exactly 10 years ago, while Toyota’s latest Hilux, introduced in 2016, isn’t likely to be replaced until mid-decade.
The new Ford Ranger will be officially revealed later in 2021 ahead of its 2022 on-sale date, and it is widely reported that the newcomer will be built around a modified version of the current model’s ‘T6’ architecture.

The new bakkie is also set to inherit the 2-litre single- and twin-turbo diesel motors, which were introduced late in the current model’s life cycle, while rumours of a V6 diesel engine (sourced from the Ford F-150) have also been doing their rounds.

Not really new. Current T6 launched in 2011. Clearly just needed to push out an article...

Just three more weeks! Ford reveals debut-date for SA's next-gen Ranger bakkie

It's been a long-time coming, and the Blue Oval brand has been ramping up the excitement of their long-awaited next-generation Ranger bakkie.

There have been teaser images, camo-clad testing videos, and now finally, Ford has announced when it will reveal its brand-new Ranger in a global debut. That date is just less than a month away, on 24 November.

Could this be the Ranger that will finally overthrow the Toyota Hilux from its thrown here in South Africa? If looks have anything to do with it from teaser images, I'd say we're in for the ultimate showdown when it launches locally next year.

The automaker says it has reimagined, redesigned and reengineered the Ranger to be the most innovative, most versatile, and most capable Ranger yet for customers in more than 180 markets worldwide. They conducted more than 5000 interviews and worked with hundreds of bakkie owners in dozens of global workshops to discover how owners used their vehicles, what they liked, what they wished they had, and what experiences mattered the most to them.

New 2022 Ford Ranger: PHEV to be full revealed later this month

Updated hybrid Ranger will be officially revealed on Wednesday 24 November on Ford's social channels

The new hybrid-powered Ford Ranger will be officially revealed later this month, where the US firm will showcase the model’s rugged new design and freshly introduced features.

The Ranger will be unveiled at 7am on Wednesday 24 November on Ford’s YouTube channel, where the manufacturer has published a short video teaser with insight into the model’s design.

“As designers, we engaged with customers much earlier in the process, spent more time with them and got more insights than ever before”, said Max Tran, chief designer for the Ford Ranger.

“Interestingly, we found that no matter what market, our customers are doers. They like solving their own problems, and they like to feel confident in their truck… not just the way the vehicle functions but the way they feel when they’re driving it.”

The model has previously been spotted with a camouflage design livery undergoing tests in extreme off-road environments ahead of its launch in 2023.

Ford Ranger gets Mustang-inspired face from Wat Ford Thailand

A combination we thought we would never see but actually makes total sense is the Ford Ranger and Mustang, given how popular these two products are in the global market. A custom Ford specialist based in Thailand has put together a kit that allows owners to turn this dream design into a reality.

Using the facelift of the current generation which is soon due to be replaced, Wat Ford has provided a conclusive redesign of the front-end which retains the original headlamps (with dynamic indicators and Mustang-inspired design cues) but applies the grille, badge, bumper and racing stripes of the Ford Mustang. Adding more presence to the design is a set of wide wheel arches, window shields and, of course, a set of racing stripes.

Wat Ford gives us very little details of the design but from its promotional video, we can tell that this Ford Ranger has been fitted with an air suspension kit.

New Ford Ranger teased again, November reveal date confirmed

Given all the spy pictures and the drawn out teaser campaign, the new Ford Ranger is hardly a state secret anymore. However, we’re still waiting to see it disguise-free and to hear all the technical details.

Thankfully Ford has now given us a date, with the latest teaser release confirming that the new model will make its official debut on November 24.

Although it is expected to be built around a modified version of the current model’s T6 platform, the new Ford Ranger is expected to offer some innovative new features, as Ford’s latest statement implies:

“With a rugged new Built Ford Tough look, and a host of new features that boost productivity, capability and versatility, the next-generation Ranger is designed to go more places, work harder and offer more comfort and refinement than ever before.”

As the latest teaser and previous spy shots confirm, the new Ford Ranger will have a more rugged look, with a frontal design heavily inspired by the latest F-150, and also bearing a resemblance to the Maverick compact truck.
