Which top-10 automakers rely most on a single model?

Which of South Africa’s 10 best-selling automotive brands in July 2024 relied most on a single model? Let’s take a closer look at some intriguing sales statistics to find out…

Some automotive brands rely heavily on a single model, while others see their sales spread across several nameplates. Just how does this phenomenon play out between the most popular marques in South Africa? Well, we broke down the figures for Mzansi’s 10 best-selling brands in July 2024 to find out.

The calculation is a straight-forward one: simply take the sales effort of each firm’s best-selling model and divide it by that brand’s overall total for the month. Keep in mind that we used brand tallies here (for example, Volkswagen rather than the overall VW Group) and restricted this exercise to a single month. Right, let’s take a closer look at what turned out to be a fascinating set of figures…

1. D-Max for Isuzu – 79.2%

2. Ranger for Ford – 77.8%

3. Jolion for Haval – 75.3%

4. Tiggo 4 Pro for Chery – 67.8%

5. Magnite for Nissan – 55.8%

6. Grand i10 for Hyundai – 51.2%

7. Polo Vivo for VW – 45.2%

8. Kiger for Renault – 40.2%

9. Hilux for Toyota – 27.9%

10. Swift for Suzuki – 21.7%

Price Aside, is the Ranger Tremor Ford SA’s Best-Kept Secret?

So, why Tremor?

The Ford Ranger Tremor is not perfect. For starters, power adjustment for the front seats would have been a welcome addition to the package, along with a tonneau cover. The Hilux GR-S III, the bakkie’s main rival, has both, albeit power adjustment for only the driver’s seat. But these are small gripes in an otherwise solid package.

The Ranger Tremor builds on the recipe that won the bakkie the title of 2023 South African Car of the Year. And the suspension setup it shares with the Wildtrak X endows it with a ride quality few (if any!) bakkies can match. Road holding and ride quality are shockingly good, making the Ranger Tremor hard to ignore in this very competitive segment.

As for the bakkie being the best-kept secret in South Africa? Well, that’s a conversation for the braai.

Review: Ford Ranger Platinum is too niche to be a smash hit but it’s really high-end

VERDICT

Although it certainly has the hardware to tackle treacherous trails, the Ford Ranger Platinum, with its fancy 20-inch rims, is probably not the kind of vehicle that you’d want to do it with.

But for those who are primarily city based, but seek something that will tackle the odd rugged road on weekend getaways or tow the boat to the dam, the Platinum offers one of the most luxurious packages that we’ve ever seen in a bakkie.

In fact, the only pick-up that can rival it on that front, albeit with a less powerful diesel motor, is GWM’s new P500.

At R1,120,100 the Platinum is expensive, but it’s only a R100,000 stretch from the most opulent Hilux and still cheaper than the two most expensive V6 Amaroks.
