Rather smart interior for a full-size van-based people mover.

Ford revealed first details of the versatile new Ford Tourneo Custom people mover, which delivers first class travel for up to nine occupants in an all-new premium interior. Targeting executive shuttle, personal use and lifestyle customers, new Ford Tourneo Custom orders start in late 2017 with delivery in early 2018.

Distinguished by its bold new front-end design with five-bar chrome grille, new Tourneo Custom offers customers a luxurious cabin featuring unique-in-segment rear seating with six individual seats that can be arranged in conference format, with the second row facing the rear.

The largest Tourneo people mover has been comprehensively re-engineered to provide superior levels of refinement and sophistication, including high-quality trim materials, improved comfort and noise levels, and the latest Ford passenger car technologies such as Intelligent Speed Limiter and SYNC 3 connectivity.

"With the new Tourneo Custom, every passenger can enjoy the best seat in the house," said Pete Reyes, vehicle line director, Ford of Europe. "This versatile people mover has been transformed from top to bottom, with a stylish interior that combines the comfort and quality of a luxury car with outstanding space and practicality."

The new innovations build on the significant product enhancements introduced to Ford Tourneo Custom in 2016, including the ground-breaking Ford EcoBlue 2.0-litre diesel engine, new six-speed SelectShift automatic transmission, and a rear air suspension option.

First introduced in 2013, Tourneo Custom is the flagship of Ford's family of Tourneo people movers, which also includes the five-seat Tourneo Courier and the Tourneo Connect available in five- and seven-seat variants.

Sophisticated design - inside and out

New Ford Tourneo Custom has a bold new front-end appearance that shares the same design DNA as Ford's latest passenger cars, with a high-mounted trapezoidal grille and dynamic, slim headlamps that flow neatly into the vehicle's muscular shoulder line.

A range of advanced headlamp technologies is available, with all vehicles featuring distinctive new signature LED daytime running lights and high series models offering powerful HID Xenon illumination.

Sophisticated execution continues inside the vehicle with an all-new instrument panel based on Ford's new interior design philosophy - pioneered on the all-new Fiesta - which offers an attractive, user-centric layout that is influenced by consumer interactions with smart devices and tablets.

Based around strong horizontal design elements that emphasise the width of the cabin, the new instrument panel has a distinctly upscale appearance, reinforced by soft-touch surfaces and attractive detailing with chrome and gloss black finishes.

All-new displays and control panels have been designed for enhanced ergonomics and ease of use, and high-series models feature a floating, tablet-inspired 8-inch colour touchscreen that can be operated with pinch and swipe gestures.

Every-day practicality has been given close attention, with significantly improved interior stowage including two lidded compartments on the upper instrument panel, and a generous stowage bin with twin cupholders in the centre console, featuring a smart roller cover.

FORD HANDS TOURNEO CUSTOM LATEST FAMILY FACE

Ford has revealed an updated version of its Tourneo Custom, finally handing the people-mover the brand’s current family face. The automaker says the facelifted model also features an “all-new premium interior”.

Distinguished by its new front-end design with five-bar chrome grille, the Tourneo Custom offers what Ford bills as “unique-in-segment rear seating” in the form of six individual seats that can be arranged in conference format, with the second row facing the rear (see animation below).

Up front, there’s a new instrument panel based on Ford’s latest interior design philosophy (first seen in the new Fiesta) as well as the latest Sync 3 infotainment system. Top-spec models furthermore feature a floating, tablet-like eight-inch colour touchscreen.

Ford has also seen fit to add two lidded compartments on the upper instrument panel as well as a “generous stowage bin” with twin cupholders in the centre console.

The updated Tourneo Custom will be offered with the brand’s EcoBlue diesel engine, in either 78 kW, 97 kW or 127 kW form. No word yet on availability for South Africa.

MS-RT gives Transit Custom rally-inspired styling...

MS-RT is the British tuning house that has already given us a pretty heavily modified Ford Ranger. Its latest creation? The R-Spec Transit Custom Edition … and it’s one interesting van.

Painted in dark grey, this rally-inspired Transit gains an aggressive front splitter, side skirts and a rear diffuser, and even a spoiler. Optional 20-inch OZ Racing alloy wheels are also available, wrapped in a set of Michelin Pilot Sport 4s.

The R-Spec Transit Custom Edition is based on MS-RT’s existing package for the Transit Custom, which means it’s fitted with the 125 kW/405 N.m 2,0-litre TDCi engine.

The rally-inspired interior features MS-RT-branded bucket seats, while this limited edition model also gains a set of bigger brakes (with braided hoses in yellow or blue), an intercooler, MS-RT engine hoses, filter and exhaust box.

The R-Spec Transit Custom Edition furthermore features an exclusive graphics pack, laser lamps integrated into the front grille, an uprated security lock for the driver’s door and an updated grey dashboard.

Just 50 units will be built, with prices starting at £35 995 (R655 300). MS-RT was recently introduced to South Africa by Centurion-based Ford Performance Centre, but given this particular Transit’s exclusivity, it seems unlikely to make it to our shores (particularly with that engine, since the local range employs a 2,2 TDCi mill).

MS-RT R-Spec Transit Custom 2018 UK review

Should I buy one?

If you have taken a look at the R-Spec Transit Custom and immediately come to the decision that your regular Transit just isn’t quite thuggish enough, then you’ll need to move quickly to get your hands on one. It’s a limited-run model launched to celebrate MS-RT’s second anniversary and only 50 will be built.

Compared with the regular short-wheelbase double-cab-in-van Transit Custom that it’s based on, it’s fairly reasonably priced, too; excluding VAT, it’s a shade under £3,600 more expensive than the top-flight Sport variant.

For the money, you get air conditioning, custom seats, a rear-view camera, a DAB radio, satellite navigation and smartphone connectivity via USB and Bluetooth, although all are housed within Ford’s now outdated Sync infotainment system. As far as fuel economy is concerned, we saw an indicated average of 27.9mpg during our time with the R-Spec.

The Transit Custom’s sales figures already speak volumes for the van’s success in the UK. And while the R-Spec does have its flaws, there’s no denying that it’s a fresh take on Britain’s best-selling van. It might not be to everyone’s tastes, but the fact that it exists at all is to be celebrated.

Pricing! Updated Ford Tourneo Custom touches down in SA

Back in July 2017, Ford revealed an updated version of its Tourneo Custom, handing the people-mover the brand’s latest family face. And now that facelifted model has finally touched down in South Africa.

The Blue Oval brand claims its eight-seater Tourneo Custom has been “comprehensively re-engineered to provide superior levels of refinement and sophistication, including high-quality trim materials, along with improved comfort and noise levels”.

While the pre-facelift range comprised five derivatives, the updated line-up is limited to just two variants at launch. Both are long-wheelbase models and both use a six-speed manual gearbox.

As before, the entry-level Ambiente (R546 000) employs a 2,2-litre four-cylinder turbodiesel engine with 74 kW and 310 N.m, while the Trend variant (R567 300) uses the same engine, but with peak outputs hiked to 92 kW and 350 N.m.

The Tourneo Custom is rated to carry a gross payload of 915 kg, while Ford says it is able to tow a 750 kg unbraked trailer (or up to 1 400 kg in the case of a braked trailer).

Along with that fresh visage, both derivatives feature new daytime running lights along with automatic headlamps and front foglamps, plus a six-speaker audio system.

Inside, Ford says the trim – from the headliner and seats to the side panels and carpets – has been “completely revised” and “more upscale materials” selected. New seat designs feature revised foam padding and geometry, while the rear seat passengers enjoy what Ford calls a “more effective” air-conditioning system.

Standard safety items include an electronic stability programme, hill launch assist, load adaptive control, roll-over mitigation and trailer sway control (the latter activated with the fitment of an approved tow bar at a Ford dealer). Front, side and curtain airbags, as well as Isofix mounting points in the second row, are also included.

A four-year/120 000 km warranty and six-year/90 000 km service plan (the latter with intervals of 15 000 km) ship standard.
