The best selling commercial van in the world is going electric, and that could change the entire fleet market. Ford already takes a huge cut of that market, selling almost a quarter of a million Transits in 2019. The company says that it expects around 8 percent of the fleet truck and van market to be electric by 2025, and it wants to make an early push to own that market, too.
While the full details of the new Transit EV—like range, power output, and cost—haven’t been unveiled yet, Ford says this will all come out soon. Perhaps it’ll be a New York Auto Show thing.

Ford has revealed “rugged” new Trail-badged versions of its Transit and Transit Custom models in Europe, complete with a Raptor-inspired grille.
The Blue Oval brand says the newcomers have been “designed specifically to operate in tougher working environments”.
Front-driven derivatives come with a new, Quaife-developed mechanical limited-slip differential (as well as a “recalibrated” electronic stability control system) while others feature “intelligent” all-wheel drive (with additional “slippery” and “mud/rut” driving modes).
The Trail variants gain additional black cladding around the front and rear lower bumpers and side panels, while the matte-black grille features bold “Ford” lettering, just like the Ranger Raptor.

Pricing! Ford Tourneo Custom gains Ranger engine plus auto gearbox
Ford Motor Company of Southern Africa has expanded its Tourneo Custom range, handing the bus the Ranger bakkie’s 2,0-litre single-turbo diesel engine and a six-speed automatic transmission.
The oil-burning 2,0 SiT engine is offered in mid-tier Trend (R700 200) and flagship Limited (R740 900) form, where it drives the front wheels via the Blue Oval brand’s six-speed automatic gearbox. In the Trend derivative, the four-pot makes 96 kW and 385 N.m, while the wick has been turned up to 136 kW and 415 N.m in the top-spec Limited variant (for the record, this engine makes 132 kW and 420 N.m in the Everest and Ranger).
Interestingly, both new versions of this engine feature the company’s AdBlue system, which uses a non-toxic urea/water-based solution to convert nitrogen oxide emissions in the exhaust gas into nitrogen and water. Take note, though, low-sulphur grade diesel (50 ppm or lower) is required in combination with these engines.

Ford’s range of adventure-focused Active models has further expanded, with the van-based Tourneo Connect people carrier now available to order in the rugged trim.
Priced from £21,285 excluding VAT (or £21,675 excluding VAT if you want the Transit Connect van version), with deliveries pegged for the end of the year, the Tourneo Connect joins the Active and Trail versions of the Transit Custom and Tourneo Custom that were revealed last month.
Like those vans, the changes for the Active are largely cosmetic but are designed to be purposeful in aiding off-road ability. Front and rear skidplates feature along with plastic cladding on the body sides, mirror caps, wheel arches and rear bumper, plus the ride height is raised by 24mm.
The vehicles can also be specified with a mechanical limited-slip differential, developed with driveline specialists Quaife, which transfers engine torque to the wheel with the most traction in low-grip scenarios.

REVIEW | The new Tourneo Custom minivan is what road trips are all about in a pandemic
• Ford has added two derivatives to the Tourneo Custom range.
• There is a new six-speed auto transmission as well as a new 2.0-litre single turbo engine.
• AdBlue technology has also been introduced to the Tourneo range for the first time.
What's it like to drive?
The 2.0-litre single turbo engine sure makes a difference compared to the previous manual model I had driven. While 136kW might not seem a lot for a large vehicle, it is more than suffice, especially when you have 415Nm at hand to do any needed overtaking. Gear changes are smooth in the six-speed auto, and there's hardly any turbo lag. The only issue could be fuel consumption.
While Ford claims a rated 6.7-litres/100km, our real-world figures were more in the region of 9.2-litres/100km. However, with the aircon on during some stints, or having the windows down on others, and having a bit of a heavy foot would naturally result in higher fuel consumption. We did, at one stage, manage to bring it down to 8.1-litres/100km. If you're going to drive at 60 or 80km/h, and not use the aircon, you are more likely to get a closer reading to Ford's claims.
The Tourneo Custom also comes in a host of colours, namely Frozen White, Race Red, and Blazer Blue. At the same time, the metallic options are Moondust Silver, Diffused Silver, Magnetic Grey, Orange Glow and Blue Metallic.
Ford says all models come standard with the Ford Protect, compromising a four-tear or 120 000km comprehensive warranty, a three-year or unlimited distance roadside assistance and a five-year or unlimited kilometre corrosion warranty. A six-year or 90 000km service plan is also included with service intervals of 15 000km.
Pricing for the 2.2 TDCi Ambiente six-speed manual model starts from R621 500 up to R740 900 for the 2.0-litre SiT Limited model we had driven on our trip.

This Tourneo Custom 2.0 Limited Automatic proved to be hugely capable and flexible in terms of its people and load-carrying abilities. More than this, however, the addition of the new 2.0-litre turbodiesel engine to the range is most welcome as it endows Ford's people-mover with sufficient performance to conduct it’s carrying duties in a comfortable, relatively refined manner. The automatic transmission, although not as smooth-shifting as we hoped it would be, is bound to attract significantly more attention from buyers in this segment as it adds a crucial layer of driving convenience that was previously lacking in the Tourneo Custom range. It has also made Ford's protagonist more competitive against its rivals!
Ford must also be commended for introducing its AdBlue technology to the local market and for actively seeking to reduce harmful emissions. However, in these cash-strapped times, many buyers are looking to cut costs and the additional outlay that topping up with AdBlue fluid will require in terms of long-term running costs may detract from what appears to be a very well-rounded product from Ford.
In terms of pricing, the Tourneo Custom 2.0 Limited Automatic is competitively-priced against its equivalent rivals in the Volkswagen Kombi and Hyundai H1 ranges respectively and standard specification (including the safety features) is fairly comprehensive. Ford has confirmed that an all-electric version of its hugely popular Transit van will be unveiled as the e-Transit on 12 November.
The reinvented Transit will be made in the US, most likely at a new purpose-built EV production facility in Michigan, and forms part of the company’s $11.5 billion (£9bn) global electrification strategy.
A preview shows that, in panel van form, the new Transit will largely retain the silhouette of the current model, but - as is usually the case with electric versions of combustion vehicles - it will likely feature a blanked-off grille and bespoke lighting clusters.

Ford has revealed the first-ever all-electric Transit ahead of first examples arriving in Europe in spring 2022.
The E-Transit, which will be available in up to 25 different sizes, weights and body variants, offers an “estimated” WLTP range of up to 217 miles. Ford says this is “roughly three times the distance the average European fleet driver covers daily”.
That range figure comes from a battery mounted under the floor with a usable capacity of 67kWh. The E-Transit also features both AC and DC fast charging: an 11.3kW on-board charger allows a slow charge in just over eight hours, while DC charging at rates of up to 115kW enables a 15% to 80% charge in around 34 minutes. Customers are given access to the FordPass charging network, with around 160,000 chargers globally - many with rapid-charge capability.

Ford tuning specialist MS-RT has added some flair to the Transit Connect yet again, with this special R120 conversion.
This time, however, the custom job is a bit more exclusive, with just 30 units up for grabs.
The exterior styling kit, which was revealed in 2019, is inspired by the Ford rally team. On the new R120 model, though, it comes finished in “Frozen White”, which sets it apart from the previous conversion. The R120 furthermore gains a set of rally-inspired OZ Racing alloy wheels, contrasting red and black decals and a quad-sports exhaust system with black tailpipes. The image is rounded off by black side-mirror caps and bi-xenon headlamps.
