Ford Transit Nugget 2021 UK review

Should I buy one?

The elephant in the room is the cost, as ever with these: the Nugget is approaching £70,000 and doesn’t even come with air conditioning as standard. As a novelty, though, it’s hard to beat, and with the slightly different arrangement, it does at least offer an alternative to the Germans. With the staycation zeitgeist, Ford should do well with it.

Ford Transit Custom Nugget package revealed for camping enthusiasts

The Ford Transit Custom Nugget package has been detailed by the American manufacturer’s European arm as an appealing offering to camping enthusiasts. Available in two trims, the camper claims to provide luxurious, high-specification interior, exclusive exterior detailing and standard equipment. The Ford Transit Custom Nugget package can be had in Active and Trail spec. The Active variant is designed for customers who prefer comfort, high-quality finishes and bold styling without compromising the functionality of a camper van. On this model, dark cladding is applied around the bumpers, body sides and mirrors to help prevent bodywork scuffs from rough-road driving and creates a stylish SUV-inspired appearance. This is enhanced by a set of Active-exclusive 17‑inch alloy wheels and a signature mesh grille. A standard, a 2,6-metre awning offers added protection and shade.

The Ford Transit Custom Nugget Active’s new yacht deck-style pale wood floor aims to provide a living space that is bright and luxurious. The brand states that it is also hard-wearing and easy to clean. Textured satin-finish units, black worktops and aluminium strips continue the modern look while part-leather trimmed seats with embossed Active graphics and “tuneable white” LED lighting provides additional versatility to the cabin.

Ford Transit FCEV prototype explores hydrogen van potential

Ford partners with UK-based engineering firm AVL to trial fuel-cell technology in its most popular van

Ford has teamed up with powertrain testing specialist AVL to build a fully functioning Transit FCEV prototype, which it will use to research the suitability of hydrogen powertrains in the commercial vehicle sector.

Partly funded by the government-backed Advanced Propulsion Centre, the project aims to improve knowledge, engineering and integration of the technology.

The powertrain uses a modularised fuel cell system approach and replaces the battery of the Transit BEV (upon which it's based) with a smaller unit. A proton-exchange membrane (PEM) fuel-cell system has been installed and the production BEV's electric motors remain.

Ford Tourneo Connect gains enhanced design and connectivity

Compact van-based MPV receives four-wheel-drive option and up-to-date interior technology

Ford has revealed an updated version of its Tourneo Connect, with improved digital technology and several design changes.

The van-based compact MPV gains a stronger, more sculpted exterior for a sportier look, with bespoke styling for each specification level. It remains a seven-seater, with the choice of short and long wheelbase options.

Four specification levels – Trend, Titanium, Active and Sport – will be available, as will Ford’s 1.5-litre Ecoboost turbo petrol and 2.0-litre Ecoblue diesel engines, ranging from 102bhp to 122bhp.

“The all-new Tourneo Connect is the first of an exciting new generation of Tourneo vehicles from Ford," said Hans Schep, general manager of Ford Pro Europe. "Its fresh new design, seven-seat versatility and new all-wheel-drive technology plus its all-important connectivity features offer a winning combination for our customers.

“We’ve taken the qualities that customers value and have raised them to another level, creating a new Tourneo Connect that’s ready for any challenge, whether it’s work or play."

The Active model offers the most significant design changes, with two-tone 17in alloy wheels, a honeycomb grille, a metallic-effect skidplate and body mouldings around the wheel arches, bumpers and sills. It also gains Boundless Blue as a unique paint colour at launch.

Inside, the Tourneo receives an 8.25in infotainment touchscreen as standard, with the option to upgrade to a larger 10in display that's standard on Titanium, Sport and Active trims.

Sport models gain a 10.25in digital instrument display as standard, which is able to connect to the FordPass app on mobile devices to display vehicle information.

Ford’s new Torneo is a Caddy Connect

VW’s small van goes blue oval as the global collaboration begins to take shape.

Ford’s corporate development agreement with VW has delivered a new American badged MPV, that is actually quite German.

The American company’s latest Tourneo Connect is very much a VW Caddy 2021 clone. That means this Ford uses the VW MQB platform, with all its advanced engineering benefits.

Ford’s design team has tried to give the VW-platform Tourneo Connect some separate identity with its grille design and unique wheel options.

The core engineering details are an interesting blend of Ford powertrains and VW platform.

Engine options are either the 1.5-litre EcoBoost turbopetrol, good for 85 kW and 220 Nm, or two 2-litre turbodiesels, boosting 82 kW/280 Nm or 90 kW/320 Nm.

Pairing these engines to their drive wheels, are a six-speed manual gearbox or seven-speed dual-clutch transmission. Don’t think for a moment that the latter is a VW DSG, as Ford specifically references the seven-speed dual-clutch being its own PowerShift transmission.

With the move to VW’s MQB platform, the new Tourneo Connect is the first of its lineage to offer all-wheel-drive. Interestingly, the all-wheel-drive option is only available with a six-speed manual gearbox and the more potent 2-litre turbodiesel engine.

The Ford Tourneo Connect is ready to house all your dogs

Ford's smallest Transit van morphs into a seven-seat MPV ready for adventure. Or a trip to Dogs Trust

It appears the people carrier is enjoying a wonderful renaissance. It’s a party Ford’s never truly left, mind, with the Galaxy and S-Max both stalwarts of the genre. And now it has a new offering: the rejigged Tourneo Connect.

It’s a windowed version of one of the wee-er Transit vans, in essence, but it’s a bit more sophisticated than that when you pore over the details. Pore over them too much and you'll realise it's very similar to its Volkswagen Caddy cousin, too...

There are two wheelbase options, both of which cram in seven seats. The rearmost five of those seats – split into rows of three and two – can be folded or removed entirely to fit in bikes, wakeboards or whatever other active gear Ford wants you to use this car for. We want to use it for a ‘how many Goldens can you fit in a fairly small MPV’ record we’re desperate to get off the ground…

The answer is probably ‘many and numerous’, especially given a trio slot nicely into the boot of a BMW 1 Series. There’s over three cubed metres of volume here, as well as a heap of towing ability, with a trailer assist system to lend a hand.

Next-generation Ford Tourneo Connect revealed as rebadged VW Caddy

The all-new Ford Tourneo Connect has been revealed with Volkswagen Caddy DNA. The new offering aims to bring a new level of style, space and versatility to the Tourneo brand that is suited for busy lifestyles with a comfortable and highly flexible interior.

The Ford Tourneo Connect features the design language of Ford’s latest passenger cars. The front has been styled with strong, sculpted lines to create a sporty impression with each series having its own distinctive appearance.

Ford’s SUV-inspired Active series offers a blend of rugged style and premium details. Unique 17-inch alloy wheels feature a two-tone finish of dark and machined metal, part of the signature look that includes a honeycomb grille, a metallic-effect skid plate and additional body mouldings around the wheel arches, sills and bumpers. The palette of ten vibrant different paint finishes includes new Boundless Blue, the unique launch colour for Tourneo Connect Active.

The line-up of four-cylinder turbocharged engines for the Ford Tourneo Connect includes a 1,5‑litre EcoBoost petrol engine producing 84 kW and 220 N.m of torque and two EcoBlue turbodiesels developing 89 kW and 320 N.m or 82 kW and 280 N.m. All models feature a six-speed manual transmission as standard but the seven‑speed PowerShift dual-clutch automatic gearbox is available as an option. Steering wheel-mounted paddles are introduced to the cabin as well. All-wheel drive is available on models fitted with the 89 kW diesel engine and six‑speed manual gearbox.

Ford South Africa is yet to confirm if the Ford Tourneo Connect will be introduced into South Africa.

New Ford Tourneo Connect revealed, and it’s based on the VW Caddy

It’s a well known fact that the next-generation Volkswagen Amarok will be based around the new Ford Ranger, with both due to be built in South Africa. However, the partnership works both ways and its first fruit comes in the form of the new Ford Tourneo Connect, which is in fact closely based on the Volkswagen Caddy.

Revealed for the European market on Tuesday, the Ford Tourneo Connect will be available in a wide range of variants, offering two wheelbase choices and three specification grades. These take the form of Active, Titanium and Sport, with each offering a unique styling package that even includes bonnet stripes and darkened alloy wheels in the case of the latter.

So far Ford has only shown the new model in people-mover guise, in which it offers seating for up to seven occupants, but a panel van version is also likely to be revealed soon.

However even in the ‘bus’ guise that we see here, the Ford Tourneo can be rather useful as a load-lugger, with the second and third seating rows capable of being folded, tumbled or removed completely, to offer up to 3.1m3 of load space. What’s more the front passenger seat can fold flat to enable a three-metre-long load space that accommodates items such as kayaks and flat-pack furniture.

The cockpit is very much a Volkswagen Caddy affair, and buyers can go the full digital route with a 10-inch touchscreen infotainment system and 10.25-inch digital instrument cluster.

Winnebago Is Prepping Itself For The Electric Future

The eRV concept is short on range with just 125 miles per charge, but Winny says that's no biggie

Winnebago, yes that Winnebago, is jumping onboard the electric vehicle bandwagon in a big way. This week at the RV Super Show in Tampa, Fla. the company unveiled the e-RV, what it is calling the first all-electric zero emission motorhome concept. You can look at it and instantly tell that it’s Ford Transit-based, which makes sense as Ford recently unveiled an electric Transit.

Clearly this is based on the high-roof long-wheelbase Transit chassis, but with a dually rear axle, which as far as I can tell is not offered on the E-Transit builder. Winnebago may have started with a Transit body-in-white from Ford, as it says it sourced the electric motor system from a company called Lightning eMotors.

“This is an exciting time for Winnebago Industries and the outdoor lifestyle industry as a whole. We are proud to continue our innovation legacy with the reveal of the e-RV concept vehicle,” said Michael Happe, Winnebago Industries president and chief executive officer.

The vehicle’s high-voltage DC battery provides power for the onboard amenities, including a hot water heater and heat-pump/air conditioner. That power can also be converted to standard 110-volt AC to power the fridge and induction cook top. Obviously if you’re camping off-grid, you’ll need to take into account your energy usage, so you have enough range to make it back to civilization. If you’re parked at a campground, you’ll have shore power, and can use your accessories to your heart’s content, and still wake up with a full charge the next morning.
