The Freedom Toaster

Once upon a time, there used to be one here in Port Shepstone. When I heard about it [from this site], I went to check it out, only to discover that the pc shop where it was had moved/closed down. I emailed the freedom toaster people to find out if they had a new address for the store [the toaster was still listed on their site]. Some time after that Port Shepstone was taken off their list.

The freedom toaster is a bust in durban since its located INSIDE the science thingy at gateway which costs like R50 to get in...

I went in in December, I asked the girl about paying so much, she said that as long as I am not using any of the other facilities, it was fine, and waived the fee.

Except the box was incredibly slow, the menus not intuitive, and software outdated.

I took a look at the one in Canal Walk Cape Town, it only had the 32bit Intrepid Ibex, no 64bit option. A little annoying, but still the toasters are a great idea.

I had a look too.
They've revamped the machine and it's much faster, but they've reduced the software on it to only 3 distros including Ubuntu.

They're also offering music (rubbish), some videos (rubbish) and some freeware(big rubbish).

I noticed the music thing. I think there were 3 or so bands on there, I didn't have a flash drive with me and I didn't feel it was worth buying a CD/DVD to burn it onto. I noted that they also have some ebooks there.

I thought the music/videos and freeware wasn't a bad idea, but it seems to detract from the whole point of the freedom toaster, which is to save you the cost and time downloading large ISO's.
