The Game Screenshots Thread™

Imo the original hasn't aged too badly. Still looks decent today. I remember being blown away by how good the game looked when it came out.

Also the original still has some of the best, most realistic driving physics in gaming history. Beaten only by GTA4.

Must be rose coloured history goggles or community patches?

Cause I tried it on my PS2 on Tuesday and man does it suck. Driving is a nightmare and don't get me started on fighting mechanics. Also FX waay worse than the shots I provided so I am sure those did not come from vanilla game, either. Will fire up An emulator to take some of my one shots to show what I mean.

Great for its time yes, did not age well at all.

It's because you're playing with a controller lol. Nah I can't really comment on the inferior console version but for me the driving/car physics are still great and realistic.

No need to take extra shots, i know what the game looks like. But for me it hasn't aged too badly. Maybe because I love playing old games lol.

Can agree on the fighting mechanics though. Always hated that.

The Mafia remake really annoyed me. Hate it because you can't ride trains or trams like in the original :p. Strange that it was possible 20 years ago but not today lol. Have they patched it in yet or is it still the same?
Not only that, but in the original shell casings and magazines dropped to the ground and stayed there.
That sound of a empty magazine hitting a wooden floor during an intense firefight was just amazing.

It's 2022 now and shell casings and magazines disappear into thin air.

The sound effects and overall attention to detail in the old game is amazing. The atmosphere too is far superior to the remake. Like in the mission where you have to go to the farm in the rain to rescue Sam for example. Sound of the rain on different surfuces, dripping, the wind, creaking etc were all so well done.

Bought this during the steam sale.

No DLC though
I have every update up to Iberia I think. No mods yet.

Played for so long now but still only about 30% of the colossal map explored.

Funny how some older games look better than some modern AAA that need 3080s to run.

Almost like art direction is more important than pure graphics.

Pure graphics help artists achieve their requirements as well without having to spend a enormous amount of energy optimising their characters and levels.

Hence why you then need a 3080 when a little work could lower that requirement and get more people appreciating your art.

I get that if you have deadlines, then sure. But it's still annoying to see games that barely look better needing new beefy cards.

Ever light up a 3d scene before with 30 real time lights?
Got wrecked then bake it into the textures and have to work around reflection probes and light probes only to be pissed that the shadows don't work correctly?
Ran out of gpu ram due to baked map space?
Written a shader to try and optimise all of this?
Ever optimised a mesh to include as little geometric detail only to have people saying it looks cheap or your character looks unnatural?
Tried to keep 2 renders of the same scene above 90fps because you're doing it for VR?

With a little work, yeah right. Stuff like UE's lumen and nanite helps but you still need pretty high end tech to even do that.

The reality is that 3d game design is becoming less cheesed and more hands on detail to provide the players with more movement freedom and in simulator games more creative freedom.

Nothing you've said explains why new games need much higher requirements yet don't seem to back it up with actual graphics fidelity.

I'll give an example, Battlefront 2015 looks insanely good even by modern standards, yet runs on a potato. Because the art department actually put in the work.
Battlefield 1 still looks insane, with a 1060, compared to AAA games that get released these days yet need 3080s to run it seems.

I think you missed my second sentence where I conceded it's probably deadlines fcking the art/graphics departments.
