Excuse my ignorance if this has been addressed previously.

Please help me with a not-so-hypothetical scenario:

If you have to travel on the GP highways on a daily basis (for work or whatever other reason) and you have no alternative route to take (or the alternative route adds an hour or 2 to your travel time, or is too dangerous to take, or whatever other reason);

Do you keep taking the tolled highways, defy the "system" and just keep racking up a bill for your travels? Can you afford to run up a bill of a few thousand (keeping in mind that if you're not registered the R450 cap doesn't apply to you) and decide to tackle the payment problem when it is addressed eventually (via invoicing, legal procedure, prosecution, or whatever);

OR:

Do you buckle under the pressure and get tagged, know that you'll only pay max R450 a month, bend over and take it up the tailpipe from SATANRAL?

I suppose it's an affordability issue....

I've decided to stick it out and rack up some debt, that I'm hoping will never have to be paid - if thousands do this (and it does look like that could be the case) the system will crumble and fall flat

I'm doing option 1.

**** them. I will use the highways everyday for work and not pay them a cent.

You sir, are my hero.

I'm also on option 1 atm and will probably be going this route for at least the foreseeable future, or until a bill for a few grand arrives in the mail :sick:

I am fortunate that I don't have to use the highways much. My only use in the past month or two was a holiday drive up to pretoria to see some Christmas lights. I still have not paid and have no plans to. My extended family have all rolled over and bought e-tags though. Pathetic.

Just heard from a SANRAL contractor that the outstanding amounts to will be integrated with your car licence fee as per eNatis system.
According to him the bill was signed into effect yesterday. Now this guy is contracted to do highway maintenance for them. He doesn't have a reason to lie. Anyone else heard of this one?

Sounds like rumour mill BS. A law like that would attract significant attention because of the implications. I don't even think Parliament's in session, and they would need to vote on it in the National Assembly.

I call BS!

some good info here though http://jp-sa.org/eTolls.asp

www.paycity.co.za is a safe and secure website and is legally committed to protecting all your transactions and information. Your credit card details and personal information will NEVER be disclosed to any third parties, unless obliged to do so by law.

I can't imagine if they gave SANRAL their credit card database to charge users toll fees illegally. That's the scum SANRAL are

paycity.co.za is a reputable website and works with AARTO municipalities in the fines section, paymyfines.co.za is owned by TMT Services & Supplies (Pty) Ltd which is a company that works with SANRAL and work with some other municipalities and probably shared their data with SANRAL.

Research a bit before you speak of things you don't know ;)

Nope, he is lying to you. Previous court cases have already found that withholding your licence for anything other than a warrant of arrest is unconstitutional.

And they still haven't got the warrant of arrest aspect right because the summons and warrant of arrest system has too many holes in it anyway and will probably be thrown out in court too.

Sounds like they have House hosting on 702 at the moment. Supports e-Tolls with nonsensical BS arguments, cuts off people who don't agree with him, doesn't want to listen to people that actually try and educate him on why the system is awful etc.

Jip, that guy is dense, didn't answer my issue on there being no alternative public transport at all (since the Gautrain is already at capacity during peak times, that can't count).

+1

With all the taxes we already pay and no decent, reliable public transport available, SATANRAL can go fly a kite.

Stop hanging out with idiots.

It seems that SANRAL and the DOT are possibly conspiring together to force people to use the tolled highways by closing alternative routes. :mad:

For example the M57 which runs parallel to the R21 from Pretoria to Kempton Park has been closed off between the St Georges's Hotel (near Rietvleidam) and 50th Ave (Olifantsfontein) since at least the 28th December and it is still closed despite the fact that the road has recently been completed and there have been no road works taking place over the festive season.
This is not the only road closure over the festive season as I have heard that other alternative routes were/are also closed for no apparent reason.

Fortunately civil disobedience is taking place and people have made a detour through the veld around the barriers. :)
