So as many of you know I work for one of the largest car rental companies in S.A.
We have complied with E-Toll and fitted all of our rental vehicles with the tags.

This morning we have already had our first inquiry from SANRAL with regards to a vehicle.

The vehicle, which is a Hyundai i10 was stated to be higher than 4.3m when passing through one of the E-Toll's - upon looking into this we noticed that the vehicle had been written off 4 months ago and still not removed from their system as requested - Secondly the vehicle was on top of flatbed tow truck. Hahahaha

They have officially gone live, yet they cannot even get a simple thing like de-registering a vehicle and then actually seeing in the picture this car is on a tow truck never mind written off.

This is going to be interesting is all I can say...

No such thing as the same instant. Close to each other in time yes, microseconds, maybe nanoseconds, but not same instant.
From a human perspective, its considered the same instant.

2) The tag is battery powered, runs from a Lithium cell (so what SANRAL has also not disclosed is that these pieces of crap will need to be replaced eventually).

And I am guessing that you'll be charged R150 for a replacement tag, oh, and whatever other increase in fees that you may have incurred whilst it was flat.

No. Its worrying .Seems this thing is much better at tracking than I expected. They could flag a vehicle as not valid by its height off the road and then query it.

Yes because it was fitted with an e-tag. If it wasn't would they have a clue?

I don't think it was the tag that gave it away? (WRT the height )

Ja, they obviously have some kind of height sensors.
Any vehicle will trigger the height sensor whether e-tagged or not.
But the fact that this one had an e-tag made it easier to contact the owners.

Don't they classify the vehicle by doing image processing and that way tell the difference between a bike and a truck?

If they had looked at the image of this vehicle they would have seen that it was a smashed up car on the back of a tow truck! :D

Most of my co-workers have decided to buy etags, some already have. These are the same people who hate the etoll system and promised never to buy them. I'm now wondering if I shouldn't buy an etag.

If we're ever forced into getting e-tags, our office has a cunning scheme. Since five of us all travel much the same distance on the freeway daily, we're going to swap our tags around between us every few days and then dispute everything. Will it work?

Not if you've agreed to the T&C. They absolve SANRAL of any faults or failures on the e-tag, and a misread or failed read will still result in a charge for you at the non-tagged rate.

You have 59 days to pay from invoice, as per their website - http://www.sanral.co.za/e-toll/index.php?gort_xml+template~~menu/main~~L1_11845~~ENG~~~~~~. So why not at least let them sweat it out? Based on their financial situation, if nobody paid even for 2 months, they might already be in enough trouble to default on their loan repayments.
