The Gauteng E-tolling Thread

the etoll trucks are presently in the parking lot at Makro Strubensvalley.
My wife prevented me from doing anything to them. I wanted to cut their power on the user pays principle

Went to Fourways and Douglasdale shopping centres earlier on and did a non-scientific count of e-tag holders - and here are my "expert" findings:
- I have not come across elderly people without a tag (driving mostly those little tin-can cars)
- (sorry if you own an Audi/Merc and are not tagged) what is it with Audi- (any model) and Merc (especially SUV) having tags? Almost seems to be the new powerbalance band for those people
- Out of 20 cars only counted 1 tagged (new car game: see how far you can count until you spot a tag)

Gauteng/Vienna, December 13, 2013 – This month saw the start of e-tolling in South Africa, following an announcement by the country’s Minister of Transport, Dipuo Peters, on November 20. Kapsch TrafficCom reports that the number of active accounts has been consistently rising following the commencement of the e-toll project in Gauteng, on December 3. It is anticipated that this trend will continue.

Kapsch had completed the construction of the system, and was ready for its commencement at the time that the start date was announced. Says Georg Kapsch, global CEO of Kapsch, the technology infrastructure providers, “The delay in announcing the start date of e-tolls in South Africa restricted us from operating the service we were contracted to do within the timeline we anticipated. Nevertheless, we had been operating the system in a soft tolling environment awaiting a formal toll commencement date announcement. As an organisation, we are glad to be able to roll out our service offering as we do in many countries around the world. We are looking forward to demonstrating what our strength in delivery is.” The Gauteng Freeway Improvement Project (GFIP) is one of the largest electronic toll collection systems for open road tolling in the world.

Increased foreign investment in South Africa
During the preparation phase of this project the company has contributed to the South African economy through foreign direct investment, job creation and skills development. A large number of South African companies are involved in this project as subcontractors. Says Executive Board Member, Andre Laux, “Kapsch has created over 1,500 jobs in South Africa. Our in-country leadership ensured that these staff members remained motivated and were strategically up-skilled in the lead-up to commencement”. “We are confident of the success of the project in South Africa and look forward to continuing our work and adding value to the country through infrastructure development,” concludes Mr Kapsch.

Kapsch TrafficCom is a provider of intelligent transportation systems (ITS) in the application fields of road user charging, urban access and parking, road safety enforcement, commercial vehicle operations, electronic vehicle registration, traffic management and V2X cooperative systems. Kapsch TrafficCom covers with end-to-end solutions the entire value creation chain of its customers as a one-stop shop, from components and subsystems to their integration and operation. The solutions of Kapsch TrafficCom help to provide funding for infrastructure projects, to increase traffic safety, to optimize traffic flow, and to reduce environmental pollution from traffic. The core business is to design, build and operate electronic toll collection systems for multi-lane free-flow traffic. References in 43 countries on all continents make Kapsch TrafficCom a recognized supplier of electronic toll collection worldwide. As part of the Kapsch Group, a family-owned Austrian technology group founded in 1892, Kapsch TrafficCom, headquartered in Vienna, Austria, has subsidiaries and representative offices in 33 countries, has been listed on the Vienna Stock Exchange (KTCG) since 2007, and generated with more than 3,000 employees revenues of EUR 488.9 million in fiscal year 2012/13.

Why not get all South Africans to key anyone's car with an etag. Would get a message through very quick..

Sounds about right for what I have seen at Cresta, Clearwater Mall and Westgate shopping centers. I also found your Merc, Lexus, BMW, etc., cars to be tagged the most. I suppose they really do not want to go through all of the troubles they are being threatened with.

The queues are still lining up however...

Lol, while true I do not believe in bringing such type of damage.

Besides, imagine all the high-range vehicles claiming from insurance - we will be punished with higher premiums ourselves the next year....

Not really - picture of Sanral shop at Cedar Square. Security tried to escort me out but backed off when I started taking photos of them and told them to F-of or lay charges of assault against them

Not we, etag holders who claim ;)

I prefer not to resort to physical damage(unless it's a Sanral vehicle)

It now is gonna cost me ~R40 to visit my mom per visit :( and she can't afford it to even go anywhere now. Back roads are long and more dangerous now :( business is now almost closed because tolls cost too much and if they increase price they loose basically all business.

The poor are most affected and they already have nothing :(

This cannot happen. End of discussion. Assuming the next government if so doesn't eventually scrap it what do we so? :(

Literally starve and die

I haven't been past there in a couple of months but I don't recall the etrolling shop at CS having quite as much public floor space as that (especially depth), did they make some drywall alterations or move to a bigger shop?

Must be our tax money at work.

Why don't we get a choice where our tax money goes? Or do we just hand the government the bank account of all our money and keys to mint? Why have we not held the government accountable as a nation. Where are our riots like Ukraine ?

Why don't we get a choice where our tax money goes?

The answer to that question is the same as the answer to this question:

Why didn't king Zumatello ask nicely if he could spend more than R200m of tax payers' money on himself?

Which has a similar answer to the question "why do dogs lick their gonads?"

Coming back to the etrolling shop at CS, maybe they thought they wouldn't need any back office storage space due to all the etags they were going to sell and made extra public floor space available for all the sheep they were expecting to slaughter.

As far as I remember it's the same shop (the one on the upper level close to the entrance of Virgin) - perhaps the way the shot was taken is deceptive - I got shouted at when I stepped in and tried to take a picture so I did it from the outside

Even if there are a bit of queues. I would have expected a lot more people queuing up. We have over 2 million cars in GP. So far I haven't spotted more than 50 tags on windows of cars. If I were SANRAL, I'd be very concerned. Already it looks like the violation rate is far higher than they expected.

They must already be printing over 1M invoices.

The threats are gonna start soon now to force people into paying, final demands etc. All empty words if we stand together

Gotta love the GPS. Had to drive to the vaal and GPS took me on back roads and quicker than the folks that took the highway

So here's something fun.

I dropped the below mail to [email protected], just to see what they would reply with. Turned on delivery and read receipts ( because, why not? )

Hi there Sanral,

I am trying to pay my account online by the URL that has been
published in the media recently;

https://www.sanral.co.za/e-toll/portal/PayTollFeesUnregisteredUsers.aspx

Unfortunately, it seems that I am doing something wrong and cannot pay
through that URL. Please assist. This was working a few days ago when
I last checked.

I am not comfortable opening up an open-ended account with your
company at the moment, because I would prefer to review charges before
I pay them, rather than let the money be automatically deducted from
my account. I am sure that you understand.

My tolls are due today, and I am unable to pay. Please be advised that
I will not accept any late penalty fees because your own systems are
not functioning correctly.

Thank you very much,

What I got back from them is a "Message deleted without being read" response. Apparently this mailbox just wipes out mails after they're a few days old.

Before anyone says anything, I know that the system is not meant to allow me access to view my etolls if I'm not registered ( Despite what the URL might suggest ) - But any member of the public who'd read that article might think differently.

Yeah, it's just lies and threats.

It's been way more than 7 days and SANRAL has been rather quiet.. They must be struggling
