The Gauteng E-tolling Thread

You have to wonder why they are so stubborn and persistent with the eTolls and not willing to go the fuel levy route. Perfect time to implement it.

On the other hand this all seems like speculation. Better wait for the full report

Speculation at best, yes. However if there is any truth to it, the government hasn't seen any thing yet. Making it compulsory will cause a bigger resistance. Like Sinbad said, just because the car has one, doesn't mean you have to pay. Though, they might make you want to sign stuff saying you will pay, before buying the car. If that's the case, I don't see dealerships being too happy. I wouldn't buy a car if thats the terms.

Just buy the car in another province . That is if only vehicles sold in Gauteng are applicable. And imagine the backlash if every car sold in SA must have an etag. Imagine the people in the other provinces joining the backlash. After thinking about it, it isn't viable.

I was the poster of the article originally, but suspect it is only speculation and taken out of context.

Avis and other car rental companies already have etags on their vehicles that are registered (number plates) in other provinces.

What would the car rental companies do with their old vehicles if people started refusing to buy a vehicle that already has the etag disease?

This is madness and it will put the new and used car sales markets in a mess.

I will most certainly not buy any car that has / had an eTag. New or otherwise. I will walk out of the dealership if they try and force it on me.

Once again, this is something that hasn't been thought through properly.

Now this is from the CFO of Sanral

Mulder says the main objective of tolling is not funding, but traffic demand management – changing the behaviour of motorists through pricing signals in order to reduce congestion.

Should the e-toll system be scrapped or allowed to fail, she fears the Gauteng freeways will once again become a huge parking lot.

What a load of ...

It's not like there is decent/any public transport to avoid the freeways over most of the province, just select areas or routes (Gautrain, but that's over capacity at peak already and Rea Vaya is like Soweto to JHB).

Typical ANC behaviour that counts the eggs before they have even been laid.

Yesterday I had to use my handbrake on N3 North because we were literally parked already. So yes Ms Mud the current existence of your system means squat

That's actually an admission that the "upgrades" to the road actually did sweet fanny adams to ease congestion, and the etoll system was actually meant to reserve the freeways for the rich and the taxis and keep people who couldn't afford it from using them.

I've mentioned it before whenever these twits talk about congestion easing. Just look at the N1 from William Nicol to Rivonia in the morning and the other way round in the evening, still as congested as it was before the upgrades
