The great environmental scam?

I bought the Lexamark E120. Everyone should note that although the initial price includes a toner, this toner only prints 500 pages (as opposed to a full toner which prints 2000 pages).

I think we all know the manufacturers make little to nothing on the printer itself. They rip us off on the ink (replaement cartidges and toners) - that where they make their money. I recall seeing something about how a litre of ink costs more than a litre of chrystal (spelling) champagne and baluga caviar.

I think it's fashionable at the moment to be environmentally friendly. But the printer manufacturers are hypocrites, because the whole situation is certainly not environmentally friendly. I don't print a lot but I've bought 4 printers in 6 years and only 1 replacement cartidge. Now how do I dispose of those wasted printers in an environmentally friendly way? Will I care to? Will everyone else care to?

Something that needs to be taken into account is that cartridges supplied with printers only have to be half full by EU standards. Consumables are a big rip off.

Yes I remember this. Years and Years back. When we bought our First Printer (Lexmark ), we noticed the prices of the ink cartridges.

The sales representative at Makro then pointed out to us that the included cartridges were supposedly only half full, thus the higher price for the "Full" cartridges.

Don’t know how true that was/is.

I bought a Lexmark all in one printer, scanner etc and am not happy with it. Other than the ink being overpriced, the stuff dries out - sometimes within 2 weeks! Once that happens then the cartridges are useless even if they are full.

From what you guys say the Cannon looks good, but the article seems to favour Epson. Anyone got any views one way or another? Also which one is more penguin friendly?

article said:
On inkjets, Craig says the technology contained in the cartridge comprises the substantial component of the printing capability. “Particularly at the entry level, the printer itself is really not much more than a casing,”

Ha ha.. looks like Lexmark needs to educate their marketing manager a bit better.. :p

What tommyrot.

Refilling ink cartridges, costs around R50 but if not done right the cartridges will leak and damage the printer. If I remember correctly, the tv ad said that liquid ink costs R20000 per litre

Apparently epsons are more penguin friendly. I'm running a canon ip4200 on ubuntu gutsy tribe 5 at the moment. (The new printer auto detect thingy detected and installed my printer without me having to press a button! Friggin amazing!). The canon driver works fine for documents but when it comes to printing photos it truly sucks. The prints looks very drafty and there aren't really any settings i can tweak to improve it.

Must be doing something wrong. I have a IP4000 and an MP780. Both of them print beautiful photographs (particularly if you use photographic paper). If you go into the printer settings you will find a whole range of quality controls options, previewing, effects, etc. Just bring up the printer in your printers folder, right click properties, click "Printing preferences".

According to this and this the final release is on 18 October 2007, which might include the additional printing features you require.

Why buy cartridges when you can get the latest version of the printer for the same money? .

The latest printer for the same money have cartridges filled just between 25-50% when in the box. So ink would not last.
