The great sleep divide

What are you adding to the debate by not debating the actual article this is not off topic or the Philosophical Debates section the article is important to the debate.
Does this mean that you can say Research is Madness, and if someone has a different view they not allowed to debate it? So why is it madness? please give your balanced reasons to why the research is madness. I am waiting to see what you going to say

Still awaiting your response

I respond to this once you give me your reasons as to why you agree or disagree to the article or the themes in the responses.

I mean if you read the article you would know that you already highlighted the reasons its just not SA specific and is specific to many poor people around the world.

@Vrotappel
Did not read the linked article, but more responding more to the theme of the responses to your article. Yes it is stupid to blame the white, no it is not. So where do I stand: See my response below:
Yes, the article is stupid. Everyone makes their own choices, these choice affects our sleep:
  • Drugs: i.e. caffeine
  • Type of Bed: Certain mattresses are uncomfortable
  • Activities prior to bed: what you do immediately before going to sleep will affect your quality of sleep. i.e. watching/browsing on phones/pc monitors etc. will affect you.
  • The time you turn in. You are responsible for your own sleeptime.
  • I.e. All of the above- you are responsible for as an adult.
No, it is not stupid, but only as it relates to South Africa. And this is only because I personally experienced it. I lived in townships for quite a number of years. To get too work, university etc. required us to stand up really early, because (this will be the only time I use this excuse):

  1. Apartheid Planning - i.e. where non-whites lived vs where we worked etc.
  2. Bad Public Transport - I am old enough to know - trains were always k@k, but it worked, however, it was really nice on the lines which predominately serviced whites (so there will be a difference of opinion depending on what you experienced). There is a reason why the mini-bus taxi industry flourished in South Africa.
  3. Carte Blanche years ago did a segment on how early people stood up to get to work. It was in Mitchells Plain, and the lady (short black hair) interviewed the Guardtjie, on why she only sees women in the taxis so early in the morning, he replied that the men are too lazy to work. Off topic: not to lazy, already, we were seeing the breakdown of families and the rise of women led households.
  4. I read an open letter to Cape Times when it was still independent, about the experience of a black man going to work and how early he has to stand up so that he can be at work on time.
So yes it is not stupid, but, only as it relates to South Africa and the experience of people of colour because of the way our cities and town were segregated and the lack of good public transport.
In SA with a 64%+ unemployment rate it is also stupid.

I admit I’m a little confused. At points the article suggests that racial minorities are inherently likely to sleep less for genetic factors, but then proposes social reasons that would drive them to sleep less - even hand-waving away similarly situated blacks and whites with John Henry, while declining to explain the why of the impact on Hispanics or Chinese and fully neglecting to mention if other racial minorities have similar issues (also intriguing is that they broke up the Asians enough to include Chinese).

The article feels like it wants me to come away believing the sleep issue is a racial justice problem and so skewed the analysis to make its case. There is a reason I read Ars and not Fox or MSNBC. The staff need their weekends too and I suppose Conde wants their clicks and ad dollars, but at least print something that doesn’t read like misleading journalism.

One of the comments on Ars and puts in words quite nicely how I view "Research" like this.

So fat people sleep less?

well tell that to the fat is healthy crowd.
Fat is fabulous!!

Research is madness now?

Any sort of research that disagrees with the woke narrative gets the snowflakes foaming at the collective mouth in the same way that witches and Galileo's theory that earth revolved around the sun offended the Church. Any hint about research into the causes of homosexuality or links between race and intelligence would cause the same hysterical reaction that cost James Watson his career.

On the main page the most useful link is entitled "Sizzling science: How to grill a flavorful steak".

Right now I'm sleeping about 10-11h a day. Maybe a combination of winter/bug under the collar.

Stress leads to less sleep, the poor stress more than the rich.... mystery solved.

Stop stressing and get some sleep.
