The growing need for online speed

Many truths in that article. Although I do battle to understand the logic of the initial question or rather is obviousness. Its human nature to push the envelope, technology gets smaller, faster, can do more per gadget, cars engines get more output than before, same engine size and 2 x the speed, so much so that Governments need to draft laws to govern the engines, but we still buy them. We love to throw comments around like "if it ain't broke, don't fix it" but we are always trying to improve things and thus we always want more from those who design, make and build.
In speed of Data, it should be obvious, speed = better no matter how you slice the cake. Telkom's great defense of ADSL usage for browsing/email alone seems to forget that. Websites get interactive, graphic intensive, sounds are added and thats just a online Flower and Lingerie shop. What about the CNN's, Disney's, broadcasters of media content, radio, etc, et cetera. Add a 20 -30 sec page load on 512k to our 3GB cap and we have SA surfing the web in text mode without images just so we can pretend to be part of the world. Chatting regularly to our phonetically spelling brethren across the Atlantic, if a Buy Online page takes longer than 1-2 secs to load, they won't shop there and go elsewhere. They want rich content, detailed images, interactive pages, secure ordering and purchase and they want it fast.
I seriously doubt that without Telkom we would be much different or more understanding to the online business that makes us wait, as it stands now we know that they (the servers) are waiting for us.
In my opinion speed and amount of data delivery is and will be the key to success for many, many years. Those that can't afford it and those that can't get it (ie. South Africa) will fall by the wayside as far as technology, education, standard of living and development. The maybe surprising thing about Africa is that the liberation wars were fought and won to free the people from being slaves to the colonial powers. Now those very victors are insuring through their apathy and inability to try understand and move into the future that all the people will remain slaves or at least the peasants of the global world for the next 100 years.
