Yeah, they will plunder South Africa untill nothing is left. Then they will steal from their neighbours untill that is all gone, then WHAT!

We have a enclosed area with very expensive 2.4M high razor "wire" on the one side. More like made out of a thick rod. Total length was about 550 meter. For years it was fine. then suddenly a 30 meter stretch was stolen. Then another 29 meters and again some more. Total value in exess of R30000.00. We saw along the road where the "free" subsidised housing projects were done, a dwelling with "our" fence. Only a piece of it. The rest of the same fence is still patches of anything. The cops just say that we cannot prove it is ours as maybe it was stolen from eSkom. So we marked ours with paint. It was quiet for a while since we marked it and then suddely another 44.5 meters were stolen on Monday and a hour ago I drove down to the remaining partial fence and another 44 meter was stolen during tonight. Yesterday afternoon it was still there. Thus total length stolen thus far 227M. About R50000.00+ worth. We are in the process of putting up Electric fencing but ATM I doubt if even that would keep the scum out and away.

The joke is that most of our residents in the community was probably their former neighbours, many of them cannot even contribute to the security of our enclosed area, at least they try as far as they can.

These thieves will plunder just because they can and obviously to survive or out of greed.

I GIVE UP>

haha.. reminds me of my dads surgery.. they've stolen gutters, stoep roof, + support, door bells(the buttons :-O), door handles, glass.. yes glass, after realising the place has alarms that go off the minute they set foot inside they started stealing the glass off the windows, concrete slabs off the fence, the gates<seriously>, drain pipes, welcome mat, dads medical plaque even, also stated removing roof tiles :-o etc

So .... somewhere in some remote (or not so remote!) area, there is a certain someone practising medicine under your dad's name.

Or maybe he's just using it as a decoration in his home. Gotta keep up with the latest trends in interior decorating :D

Haha :D You will be surprised how many quiet habital places in more remote areas get stripped untill only a few bricks and the foundation remains. It is a disease of some kind in Africa.

This morning I took a stroll to see via which way they took the plundered fence.

It was a shocking experience. There is a two track car path created all the way to the informal housing settlement, following a path next to the dual railway tracks that used to pass close to our fence under a double road bridge. The rails was plundered to nothing a while ago. All the rail tracks was stolen. So the train services stopped. They even stole a last remaining piece recently (still in use) which derailed a train supplying goods to the Industrial area. The "deparment" had to replace the rails and damage at taxpayers cost.

This morning I found that they even hammered out the metal links that is imbedded in the concrete rail sleepers. They broke open a huge concrete box and stole whatever was inside. They dug out the two electic cables that was feeding whatever was in the concrete box. ALL trees young and old in this field was chopped off to the ground. A constant stream of raw sewage is running from the settlement to a nearby dam.

What a horror glimpse into our South African future!

We have just about caught up with Nigeria where they even steal the telephone and electric poles causing people to buy generators in many areas.

We haven't had any Telkom lines at the company I work for, since early January.

The entire office park had to have wireless installed.

This is the response we got from Telkom when we inquired about repairs.

Your fault is part of a bulk fault logged in your area.

Eish, Penguin. That's just bloody frustrating. Hope you find some way of dealing with 'em.

Would it be viable for Telkom to upgrade the entire network to fibre? Fibre is worth nothing to these freeloaders, is it? Clearly mark the cable somehow and end this BS once and for all.

Again I say the scrap metal dealers are the ones who need to be constantly clamped down on. They're the people buying all this stolen property. If there's one way to get to the heart of the problem, it's that IMO.

At my dad's previous company, they had a mixing plant set up permanently on site. This thing is literally a building-sized piece of equipment used in road construction. They stole the entire plant! And guess what - when the cops investigated, they found pieces of this thing at every scrap metal joint in the surrounding area. No surprise there.

They use the fibre to weave baskets in some areas, I'm not kidding you!

Not possible with Telkom I am afraid.

The first few months we phoned Telkom basically everyday and all they could tell us is, it is part of a bulk fault and they are investigating.

About a month ago I phoned Telkom again and they told me they *think* its copper thieves and at the moment it will cost too much to install copper lines again. They however are busy installing their wireless network in the are.

ROFL

I would like to say they'd steal anything not nailed down, however they'd probably steal the nails :/

They've been thieving our newspapers for a few weeks now. We set a little present for them in the form of a rat-trap and some wire. ;-)

As for Telkom replacing the Copper with Fibre, I've heard stories of the thieves just stealing the fibre in bigger chunks until they put copper back into the ground....

I went to the loo this morning as usual but sat there for 20 minutes without anything happening. Then it dawned on me! My bowel had been burgled during the night.

I say clamp down on the people creating a market for this stuff. The scrap dealers, pawn shops, building materials sellers, the whole lot!!!

But the honest ones will cry out victimisation! :(
