The hi-def format war is over

I read somewhere one time (probably urban legend) but anyway, that it was actually the porn industry that was the cause of the demise of betamax tape format when the industry decided to only support VHS. I wonder if they have the same power this time round (if its true). If they decide to not use Sony's blu-ray, will it make a difference?

Edit: So maybe the war just ain't over yet. :p:p

The "war" is far from over, and if some companies have their way regarding digital distribution, it will be nothing more than a damp squib.

I don't think that the porn industry has the same power this time round because going hi-def causes more problems or them than it presents opportunities.
To film in hi-def you have to start making sure that everything is just right as the viewer will become distracted by the little imperfections.
Apparently razor burn is just one thing that they are struggling with (or so I've been told).

Anyway I think the porn industry has shown the way forward in going digital, way ahead of the rest of the entertainment industry

the porn industry is behind hd-dvd so to say iirc

With most other countries getting nice fat pipes into their houses who cares? Physical media is going to be dead in the water before long.

There is definitely that aspect, Sony burnt the "geek" community with their rootkits, and well the people you want to have adopt your new technology first are the geeks...

I personally prefer HD-DVD as they've shown themselves to be a bit more innovative with online systems and such...
But yes, once we get fat pipes coming directly into the house (and as much as ivy, stalin-molefe or telkom don't want it, it will happen) physical media will no longer be necessary.

I don't really care who wins, I just want a winner. I am not buying any high definition dvd playing equipment until this happens.

Exactly! That's what's happening. The war must end soon. It will have to end this year.

Why? Both sides made a substantial investment.

The market can probably support two competing formats (DVD+r and -r formats are still around) so I think we're going to see a flood of dual format devices which will negate the significance of any particular format and both will survive only to be usurped by streaming data directly into the home.

Warner Bros to go Bluray exclusive from next year

Score 1 to the PS3

(January 4, 2008 – Burbank, CA) – In response to consumer demand, Warner Bros. Entertainment will release its high-definition DVD titles exclusively in the Blu-ray disc format beginning later this year, it was announced today by Barry Meyer, Chairman & CEO, Warner Bros. and Kevin Tsujihara, President, Warner Bros. Home Entertainment Group.

"Warner Bros.' move to exclusively release in the Blu-ray disc format is a strategic decision focused on the long term and the most direct way to give consumers what they want," said Meyer. "The window of opportunity for high-definition DVD could be missed if format confusion continues to linger. We believe that exclusively distributing in Blu-ray will further the potential for mass market success and ultimately benefit retailers, producers, and most importantly, consumers."

Warner Home Video will continue to release its titles in standard DVD format and Blu-ray. After a short window following their standard DVD and Blu-ray releases, all new titles will continue to be released in HD DVD until the end of May 2008.
"Warner Bros. has produced in both high-definition formats in an effort to provide consumer choice, foster mainstream adoption and drive down hardware prices," said Jeff Bewkes, President and Chief Executive Officer, Time Warner Inc., the parent company of Warner Bros. Entertainment. "Today's decision by Warner Bros. to distribute in a single format comes at the right time and is the best decision both for consumers and Time Warner."

"A two-format landscape has led to consumer confusion and indifference toward high definition, which has kept the technology from reaching mass adoption and becoming the important revenue stream that it can be for the industry," said Tsujihara. "Consumers have clearly chosen Blu-ray, and we believe that recognizing this preference is the right step in making this great home entertainment experience accessible to the widest possible audience. Warner Bros. has worked very closely with the Toshiba Corporation in promoting high definition media and we have enormous respect for their efforts. We look forward to working with them on other projects in the future."

So that's why everyone is going out to buy Hi_def TVs.:D It can't be for DSTV ...

Although I think its to early YET to say and believe both would survive and thus agree with Bwana and If this is true All I can say is "I told You So" to all the pro X360 nappy army soldiers :D :D who slaughtered me just because I claimed the PS3 is better and more advanced in technology than the XBox due to BluRay.

Some of the positive and negative thoughts

This was predicted here! :D

* Sony’s Blu-ray will consign HD-DVD to the trash heap by triumphing in the battle of the next-generation high-definition disc formats. Expect a Blu-ray player for Microsoft’s Xbox 360 in time for Christmas 2008.

Universal has pledged to HD-DVD ... BlueRay is a dead duck.

Well :

"HD-DVD:
Universal
Paramount
Warner Bros

Blu-ray:
Sony Pictures
Paramount
Warner Bros
MGM
Disney
20th Century Fox"

So blu-ray has a lot of support

Just buy a LG dual format reader and the end is nigh! So what was the issue again?
Just do not let the pro X360 nappy army from the gaming forum read this thread! You will be peltered and pestered with cr@p regards to 3 layer formats and all else and sundry thereafter then they would carry on trolling this thread for-ever!
I concur Blu-Ray will be the winner due to the capacity advantage and Sony enforcement!

The adult film industry has decided to go HD-DVD. Several large studios such as Universal have jumped ship and committed to HD-DVD.

HD-DVD will win, it's built on a tried and trusted format. Storage isn't everthing - what's the point having potential for 4 hours of HD video when a typical movie is maximum 3 hours?

And that's not even considering DRM:

Forget about chipping your player to play discs from other regions, you have to dish out the cash for region 2 discs ;)

I agree completely. There won't be an HD format winner. The winner will be bandwidth.

There won't be a war. Dual format players will reduce any war to a shortlived slap-fight in a big boardroom.

Blue-Ray is the winner because the sales of PS3s (Blue-Ray equipped)
made sure the units in use outnumbers HD DVD rival by about 2:1

We as consumer are glad , this format war is a short one.

Price wars the longer the better.
Format wars shorter the better.
