The Home Improvements Thread (3)

Please assist with a tool to determine how many bricks are required for a building project and where it is best/cheapest to obtain rok bricks? Thanks in advance

Upcoming projects I hope to have done before the year is done:

- Adding a second 2500l JoJo tank. This should cover the household for about a week. Just need to look at the timing so that I can empty the existing one in order to position it and have space for the second one.
- Ripping out the existing bent grass lawn that has become infested with clover and replacing it with good old Kikuyu.
- Stripping out the main garden beds inside and out and replanting with something we actually like.
- Replacing the pool cover.
- Installing those black pool solar heaters, piping is done all the way up to the roof but the previous owner removed the panels at some stage.

A big ticket item for next year is to remove the gas fireplace and replace it with a slow-combustion stove.

And then within the next 2 years repaint the entire house inside and out.

No structural work planned thankfully.

Came right with MCK Glass Works, thanks @DrJohnZoidberg

But - now stuck on beading, places in this area are pretty useless. Kept insisting a larger profile would work - I'm sure it would - and look crap. Builders Warehouse, Build It, BUCO and Brights.

Swartland, door and window manufacturer does supply window beading.. you are going to have to speak to the right people at builders/bright etc to get them to special order for you from Swartland or try contacting Swartland yourself and let them know that you are getting the run around from every one who sells their products..

Yeh - tried them already, they asked me to email them a picture, still waiting for a response.

What did you end up getting and how much did it cost?

They responded to the ticket with the product code, helps a ton as it immediately came up at both Builders and BUCO as in-stock

Now you hope that Buco and Builders website stock levels are correct..

Have had it before where builders employees just shrugged their soldiers when I showed them their branch has stock according to the website and they couldn't come up with the product in the store..

The Builders here is beyond crap with customer service, and does exactly this all the time - not bothering to go back.

My wife is stopping at the Northgate Island branch to pick up next week.

R340 - 93x37cm - the 6.38mm safety glass. Price seems to be the norm - I was quoted the same by two other places. Only place that was a real rip-off was PG Glass @ R480.
I think 3/4mm normal glass would work just fine in that size be within the regulations, would also cost much less

Edit: unless its for a door/entrance

Just had the garden sprayed with pesticide to remove a colony of harvester termites, they ate about 50sqm of lawn.

Next step, rehabilitate and/or plant new grass, and if the budget allows, install a 500mm paving border around the half of the house that has lawn right up against the wall of the house (one of my pet hates).

Photo of the little F'ers (in nature, they are actually amazing, so important in the eco-system, not so great for your garden/house):

Talking about pesticides, once a quarter i pay about r2.5k for pesticide control at my place -

1. ant treatment around the house and all paving (they do it twice - 1 week apart)

redo all the rat traps in the garden (about 4) and the house roof etc

put that stuff on window sills to prevent cockroaches and stuff.

Also spray all the skirtings in the house with something

We haven't had issues since I started using them so I guess it's working but is that a fair price? 900sqm property . Also is 4 times are year too much??

Our place is definitely not infested with rats or mice. Ants cause problems now and then.
