The Home Improvements Thread (3)

A lot of the time you just need to make sure the breaker is fully in the off position before trying to flip it on again, push it all the way down again before pushing it back up and see if that helps.

I would still be concerned as to why it has tripped so yes, get an electrician in.
It is all the way down.

toying eith the idea of renovating my old bathroom.

it has a shower / bath / wash basin

toilet is separate.

idea is to get rid of the bath (I shower all the time) make a new double size shower in place of the bath and install new basin where the old shower used to be.

question is - is it a good idea to get rid of the bath? what are the trends these days? are baths still a thing?

Baths are a thing for people with young kids.. so if your house is in a school neighborhood and would potentially be a candidate for a young family, consider keeping the bath..

good point although I don't have kids but will be renting out within the next 3yrs or so.

maybe if I broke down the wall between the shower & bath, I can get more natural light into shower, it would look better:unsure:

Definitely.. what we did in our en-suite.. shower and bath share the same long wall and they both occupy the entire length of the wall.. had a brick wall between shower and bath as enclosure.. made it a half wall to get the natural light in and open the space up a bit(in terms of feel, anyway).. half wall was nice, because its now a shelf for all the toiletries used in the shower..

So, kitchen upgrade is out of budget (and been like that for a while) but how do these 2 look ?

1st one with our kitchen reno go for more open space, the second is quite closed off. gonna be hot in there as well with oven etc.

Also consider induction stove works beautifully with solar too.

We use this works a treat

Thanks, second one is probably our kitchen size but we have big window on left side so ventilation won't be an issue.

I liked both the looks. Idea behind posting was to assess if anyone finds it terrible and I know that it is not any forumite's kitchen but ours to design. It is still nice to know opinions of others. Last time I posted some other photos, many found it tasteless. I think those photos were mainly fully white/commercial blue themed, so I can understand why.

One spill of any liquid and the floor in both kitchens become a slipping hazard, as it looks like polished marble tiles..

Personally would avoid any polished tile in a kitchen..

Any suggestions for someone who can do waterproofing on balcony(s)/ roofs etc in Cape Town?

Boom, done.

Ordered a security gate for the top of the stairs from Design11. Sent them the dimensions and the way the door must open and they made it for me exactly to the point as I wanted it.

DIY'd the installation. Impressed myself with all my new Ingco battery tools. Made it a breeze. Everything is level and aligned. The latch and lock are smooth AF.

To say I am happy is an understatement. Now I can lock the gate and the kids can joll upstairs till their heart's content in safety.

Just never ends...

So this section is likely going to fall off over the next few days. It's Nutec board, plastered to match the walls. This section being slightly raised over the rest of the wall is effectively unsupported. Had asked the plasterers when they were here 2 weeks ago to do a controlled demo, their view was it was strong enough and just to fill the crack

Underneath it's a steel frame structure into which the board is screwed. I'm guessing it's the screws/fixings that's failing.

Any ideas on an alternative that won't come off like this. Thinking perhaps the wood textured board, painted white. Much lighter than with plaster. Other alternatives (although I don't know where to find it ) a metal vent grill going all around.

Thank you...

It's the reason we were attracted to the house in the first place with a thatch coversion...before and after.

Captures all Jhb landmarks... Left to right - Turkish Mosque (Midrand)- Kelvin Power Station (Germiston) - Jhb CBD - Michaelangelo (Sandton) - Rosebank CBD - Brixton/Sabc Tower. I think we are missing Northcliff hill and the Dome, which is fine by me...

You can buy larger sheets of nutec.

Nutec planks, instead of a single board.. each plank fastened individually would hold up far better, even if plastered.. personally I would forego plastering and use a wood grain nutec planks instead..
