‘Type R challenge 2018’ on the go! Honda sets new lap record at Magny-Cours GP circuit

Following the debut of the Honda Civic ‘Type R Challenge 2018’ car at the Geneva Motor Show, the high-performance hatchback has set a new 2mins1.51sec/ lap record for a front-wheel drive production car at the Magny-Cours GP circuit in France.

The Type R was piloted by WTCR driver Esteban Guerrieri, who is contesting the 2018 FIA World Touring Car Cup in a Honda Civic TCR with Münnich Motorsport.

The Magny-Cours GP circuit is a 4.4km track with a mix of slow hairpins, high-speed chicane sections and long straights.

Civic Type R’s optimised 2.0-litre Vtec Turbo engine produces 320 PS and 400Nm of torque, and its muscular performance helped Guerrieri to exploit the character of the track.

The car’s comprehensive aerodynamic package, with a best-in-class balance between lift and drag, was perfectly suited to the French circuit.

In the Civic Type R’s +R mode, the Adaptive Damper System produces a firmer, flatter ride and greater agility for high-performance handling.

Record breaking

Speaking about the lap record, Esteban Guerrieri said: “The best thing about the Type R is that it gives you confidence. It’s very responsive and gives you good feedback.

People call the Type R the ultimate performance hot hatch and we proved today that it really is; the car continues to push the boundaries of what’s possible from front wheel drive.”

Commenting on the flexibility of the Type R as a road and track car, Guerrieri added: “The beauty is we could use ‘+R mode on track but then switch to Comfort mode and drive home.”

The benchmark time represents the first success in the Type R Challenge 2018, which will see a team of Honda racing stars attempt to break front-wheel drive production car records at a range of legendary European racetracks in a production specification Honda Civic Type R.

A similar challenge in 2016 saw Honda set benchmark lap times at Estoril, Hungaroring, Silverstone and Spa-Francorchamps, using the previous-generation Civic Type R. For 2018’s endeavour – in addition to the new Magny-Cours record – Honda will aim to exceed the times set at these four circuits.

The driver line-up for the other Type R Challenge 2018 circuit record attempts will include former Formula 1 World Champion and current NSX Super GT driver Jenson Button (UK), WTCR driver Tiago Monteiro (Portugal), NSX Super GT star Bertrand Baguette (Belgium) and BTCC legend Matt Neal (UK).

Fast acceleration

The new benchmark time for the Magny-Cours circuit is the second lap record to be claimed by the new Honda Civic Type R. In April 2017, a production development car became the fastest front-wheel drive production car ever around the Nürburgring Nordschleife, with a lap time of 7min43.8sec.

The new Honda Civic Type R retains the heritage of Honda’s high-performance hatchback bloodline and is the fastest accelerating and quickest car in its class.

The latest car to sport the famous ‘red H’ was part of the all-new tenth-generation Civic’s development programme – the largest in Honda’s history – and was engineered to deliver the most rewarding drive in the hot hatch segment, both on road and on the race track.

It features a lightweight, highly rigid bodyshell, low centre of gravity, and sophisticated dual-axis strut front suspension system, which reduces torque steer and enhances on-the-limit cornering.

Honda Civic Type R Pickup Truck Concept

Honda UK has stolen the show at the annual SMMT Test Day by showcasing a Honda Civic Type R Pickup Truck concept, almost a year after the launch of the standard road car.

Built by a specialist team from the Product Engineering department at the Honda of the UK Manufacturing (HUM) factory in Swindon and codenamed 'Project P', the Honda Civic Type R Pickup Truck has been modified and developed from the standard road car to create potentially one of the fastest pickup trucks on UK roads.

To create the Project P concept, the team used a pre-production version and adapted the design rearwards from the C-pillars of the car, with sweeping lines from the roofline to the back hiding a flatbed loading area in the centre of the car where the rear seats and boot space would normally be.

Finished in Rallye Red, the concept retains the iconic rear wing associated with both the FK2 and FK8 Civic Type R, which, in a clever piece of engineering, is movable to allow direct and unfettered access to the rear of the truck.

Using the same powertrain, suspension and gearbox as the standard road car, it is estimated Project P will complete the 0-62mph sprint in under six seconds and reach a top speed of over 165mph. It also possesses the same driving modes of comfort, Sport and +R, Project P offering both ride comfort as well as a unique racing capability on track.

Alyn James, project lead, commented: "We have a special projects division at the factory in Swindon and this project was a fantastic opportunity for the team to show just what their creative minds could do. The passion that our engineers have for Honda is shown in our latest creation and we are even considering taking it to the Nurburgring to see if we can take the record for the fastest front wheel drive pickup truck!"

Wait, what? Honda reveals Civic Type R bakkie concept

We’ll admit it … we checked our calendar when this press release hit our inbox. Yes, Honda in the UK has revealed a Civic Type R bakkie concept, but it’s no belated April Fools joke.

Built by a specialist team from the product engineering department at Honda’s factory in Swindon and codenamed “Project P”, the bakkie has been modified and developed from the standard road car to create what the Japanese automaker calls “potentially one of the fastest pickup trucks” around.

To create the Project P concept, the team used a pre-production version of the hot hatchback and adapted the design rearwards from the C-pillars, with sweeping lines from the roofline to the back hiding a flatbed loading area in the centre of the car where the rear seats and luggage compartment would normally be.

Finished in Rallye Red paint, the concept retains the Civic Type R’s trademark rear wing, which is movable to allow direct and unfettered access to the rear of the bakkie.

Using the same powertrain, suspension and gearbox as the standard road car, Honda estimates that Project P will complete the obligatory 0-100 km/h sprint in less than six seconds and reach a top speed of more than 265 km/h.

A Honda Civic Type R bakkie? Imagine no more

Unless you’re a boy racer with a dirt bike and a plumbing business, chances are you’ve never fantasized about a bakkie version of the Honda Civic Type R.

Well, now Honda’s UK division has unleashed the Civic Type R Pickup Truck concept, created for the annual SMMT Test Day - which is a look-and-drive motor show of sorts for British journalists.

The brutal bakkie was designed and built by the product engineering department at Honda’s Swindon factory.

The front half of this Honda, codenamed Project P, is as per the road car - complete with its 228kW/400Nm 2-litre turbopetrol engine that can get it from zero to 100km/h in just six seconds.

The back half, as you can see, has been reimagined for load lugging, although it’s not exactly going to swallow that big cupboard that your girlfriend’s cousin has been nagging you for the last year to help shift across town.

Nor does the Type R’s large rear wing, that was audaciously worked into the design, do this Honda’s loading and lugging potential any favours, although it is at least movable.

This bakkie is strictly a one-off, with Honda insisting that there are absolutely no plans for production, although project leader Alyn James has hinted that the concept might make its way to the Nurburgring to fight for the title of the world’s fastest front-wheel-drive pick-up truck.

“This Civic Type R Pickup Truck concept by the special team at our Swindon-based plant demonstrates the passion and commitment of the team there - going above and beyond outside working hours to deliver the final product,” said Honda UK boss Phil Webb.

“There are no plans to put this in to production but we will be using it to transport our lawn and garden products as and when required!”

Honda Civic Type R sets yet another FWD lap record

Not content with holding the front-wheel-drive production car lap record at the Nürburgring Nordschleife, Honda has set a new benchmark time with its Civic Type R at Spa-Francorchamps in Belgium.

This follows the hot hatch setting a front-drive lap record at the Magny-Cours GP circuit in May 2018.

The latest record in Belgium saw the Civic Type R lap the 7,004 km Spa-Francorchamps circuit in just 2 minutes 53,72 seconds, with former FIA WEC LMP2 class champion, Bertrand Baguette, behind the wheel.

“With a front-wheel drive usually you always expect understeer, but this car is so balanced. Straight away you get a lot of confidence as it gives you a lot of feedback through the steering wheel, especially in +R mode,” said Baguette.

“The chassis is very rigid, the rear is very stable and front is biting really well to give you a lot of front grip. The aero package really helps the car feel planted at high speed, and it’s amazing the level of traction,” he added.

Honda set the original benchmark time at the track in 2016, using the previous-generation Civic Type R. Expect the Japanese automaker to again take aim at lap records at tracks such as Silverstone, Estoril and the Hungaroring as the so-called “Type R Challenge” continues, with the likes of Jenson Button, Tiago Monteiro and Matt Neal set to do the driving.

In April 2017, a development version of the Civic Type R became the fastest front-wheel-drive car around the Nürburgring Nordschleife, managing a lap time of 7 minutes 43,8 seconds.

Honda’s Type R Challenge has continued its so-far undefeated progress across Europe by setting a new lap record for a standard front-wheel drive car at Britain’s premier circuit.

Three-times British Touring Car Championship winner Matt Neal, who is currently racing a Civic Type R in the 2018 series, took the Challenge car round the fast and flowing 5.89km circuit in 2m31.32s, beating the benchmark set by the previous generation Civic Type R in a similar challenge in 2016.

This is the third stop on the Challenge tour, but it’s actually the fourth lap record for the current Civic Type R. In April 2017, a production development car became the fastest front-wheel drive production car ever around the Nurburgring Nordschleife with a lap time of 7m43.8s.

This year’s Type R Challenge started with World Touring Car driver Esteban Guerrieri setting a new mark of 2m01.51s at the Magny-Cours GP circuit in France, followed by Bertrand Baguette’s record-setting 2m53.72s in the same car at Spa-Francorchamps in Belgium.

The driver line-up for the remaining Type R Challenge 2018 lap record attempts will include former Formula One world champion Jenson Button and World Touring Car driver Tiago Monteiro.

Honda Civic Type R to be refreshed next year in hot hatch title defence

Class-leading hot hatch will get minor exterior changes and updated infotainment to fend off new rivals

Honda will respond to increasingly tough competition against the Civic Type R by refreshing the 316bhp model for 2019.

Seen here testing in Germany, the British-built Japanese hot hatch is due to receive minor design changes including tweaked bumpers and new headlights, as shown by the placement of camouflage on the development car.

Honda is also likely to apply the latest infotainment updates to the Civic range, including the Type R, which could include the return of a volume rotary knob for the sound system (the current car uses touch buttons). But don't expect any major changes to the cabin design and ergonomics, the latter of which is among the very best in this segment for driving.

Pressure from newer rivals such as the Renault Mégane RS and Hyundai i30N, both of which are cheaper than the Civic Type R, might encourage small adjustments to the car's chassis to further enhance its adjustability; the Mégane RS is regarded as a slightly sharper steer when equipped with optional Cup suspension.

But engineers are unlikely to want to drastically alter the car’s proven formula, including a considerably more forgiving ride than its predecessor's, and the FK8 model still ranks as the quickest front-wheel-drive car at the Nürburgring.

The same is predicted for the turbocharged 2.0-litre powertrain, which, like with previous facelifted Civic Type Rs, is expected to stick with its launch output. But with 316bhp on tap, it remains among the most potent cars of the class, outpunching the Mégane RS and i30N by 30bhp and 35bhp respectively.

Even the Volkswagen Golf R falls short of the Civic Type R by 20bhp, due to its recent power downgrade, following the fitment of new exhaust hardware to ensure the model conforms to the latest WLTP regulations. Honda is therefore unlikely to feel pressed into uprating its Civic's boosted four-pot.

Global production of the FK8 Civic Type R has been exclusively handled by Honda’s Swindon plant since it launched last year. The updated model will continue to be produced there.

Although the cars roll out of a British factory, right-hand-drive models are produced around a month after the first left-hand-drive variants due to greater global demand for the latter. This will remain the case when the updated car arrives next year.
