Hot hatch showdown: Renault Megane RS vs Honda Civic Type R

Honda could be toning down Type R styling

While many people around the world might relish the way a Type R performs, some may be put off by its over-the-top styling.
There’s no doubt that the latest Honda Civic Type R is a truly tremendous affordable performance car, but the way it looks certainly isn’t for everyone.

While many people around the world might relish the way a Type R performs, some may be put off by its over-the-top styling.

But it now appears that Honda has got the memo as a couple of Type R models have been seen testing with styling that appears to have been toned down a little.

Even though the latest Type R was only launched last year, a couple of versions with light camouflage have been spotted testing at the Nurburgring.

There was a red one with a new, smaller rear wing, and a white one trying but failing to hide some subtle bodywork enhancements.

The white car still has the giant rear wing that’s such a polarizing feature for many potential buyers, but it’s possible to spot a number of other subtle tweaks to the styling.

The main changes at the front are some lower outboard grilles, both of which have a new plastic divider in them.

Whether this feature is functional or aesthetic is unclear, but they do look as though they could house some sort of lights, but that seems unlikely as the current round fog lights remain in situ.

Some big fake openings also appear at the back of the car, and these too have those plastic dividers.

As the changes appear on the whole to be relatively minor, it wouldn’t be a shock to see them implemented on the production car in the fairly near future.

There’s also the possibility Honda is trying out ideas for special edition Type R models, in which case it could be a while before they come to market.

Honda has made no secret of wanting to appeal to a wider and younger demographic than it traditionally has done in the past, but it may have gone a little too far with the current styling of the Type R.

If Honda does move to tone things down a little with the Type R’s styling it would surely only increase the appeal of the model, but anyone hoping for something as subtle as VW’s Golf R is likely to be disappointed.

The Only Phoenix Yellow 2018 Honda Civic Type R Looks Strikingly Sharp

The 2018 Honda Civic Type R’s quintessential color is Championship White, but Phoenix Yellow has also been a Type R signature in the past. Remember how good it looked on the Integra Type R? Well, somebody went through the trouble of properly respraying a Civic in factory-correct yellow and it’s actually pretty awesome.

Getting a car painted is not worth blogging about all that often, but I found HondaPro Jason’s respray interesting for a couple key reasons. For one thing, this is a full on factory-style paint job. As you’ll see in his walkaround video here, his body shop straight up disassembled the whole car to properly paint it completely. That must have cost a freaking fortune.

You can take a closer look at just how much labor went into this respray in another one of his videos:

Anyway, I really like the dedication to OEMness of this build. Until Honda actually offers Phoenix Yellow on this car from the factory, this is probably the most stock-looking yellow Civic Type R you’re going to see. Even the stickers have been replaced to make the car look like it was born to be yellow. I’m not totally sure that’s legal, but, it does look nice.

And that carbon fiber roof is actually real, which, wow. I have to admit I don’t think I’d ever be brave enough to have someone cut the roof out of my brand new car like a can of beans, but the finished product here looks pretty official.

The suede steering wheel and suede shifter boot inside also go a long way to making the car look “factory-plus.”

I’m not too sure about HondaPro Jason’s decision to cut more holes in his car’s fake grille, though. Like, I get that it looks way better, but Honda’s engineers spent a lot of time and money dialing in the Civic Type R’s aerodynamics. I have to imagine those grilles were fake for a reason, and now this Civic is going to have a lot more air turbulence in its facial area.

Speaking of air turbulence, the dual-wing biplane action is a little much for me.

But I do applaud the initiative to make a truly factory-looking Phoenix Yellow Civic Type R, and it looks good enough here that I now think Honda should actually add this to its options list.

There's no better feeling than being able to red-line a hot hatch on an open stretch of road with no traffic lights nor speeding cameras in sight.

That is a reality of travelling along the Autobahn in Germany where motorists can legally speed, as a video by AutoTopNLshows.

The weapon of choice is a 2018 Honda Civic Type-R that capable of 228kW and 400Nm - Honda's first turbocharged Type R model.
Honda claims the top speed of the hatch is 272km/h, the video below shows the Type R hitting 264km/h.

Mugen Has Made the Most Absurd Honda Civic Type R

Honda tuner Mugen has trotted out a batch of cars wearing body kits for the 2019 Tokyo motor show. Most of them are fairly reserved; the RC20GT kit for the Honda Civic Type R is not.

Mugen (say “moo-ghen”), which basically means “unlimited” in Japanese, is one of the better-known JDM tuner companies has been making performance parts for Hondas for decades. Body kits too, as you can see, for better or worse.

What you’re looking at here is being described as “a matured pre-preproduction model of the “Mugen RC20GT Civic Type R concept” exhibited at 2018 Tokyo Auto Salon” in the company’s press release.

Do you remember the first iteration of this monstrosity from last year? I didn’t, but now that I know Mugen had 12 whole months to sit down and think about what they’d done, I’m even more shocked that we’re looking at it again.

As for real-world feasibility, “pre-preproduction” sounds pretty nebulous so I wouldn’t worry too much about seeing one of these sneak up on you at a stoplight anytime soon. Maybe we’ll just get the preproduction version next year.

My initial reaction was visceral disgust but now that I’ve been looking at it for a few minutes I’m already kind of starting to see the appeal of the perverted Audi/Gumpert Apollo face treatment. Kind of.

The biplane back wing and squared-off rear bumper though, I will never understand.

Mugen has stated that the RC20GT will be “the ultimate Type R” with enhanced power and cooling performance to back up its ridiculous design, but we’ll reserve judgment on that until somebody gets to drive one hard.

In addition to this vengeful alien-looking space Civic, Mugen is showing off tuner parts for the Insight, CR-V, NSX, much more low-key treatment for the Civic, and something particularly delightful called the N-Van which might deserve its own blog. Stay tuned.

Mugen RC20GT Is A Dramatic Take On The Honda Civic Type R

Honda‘s tuning division Mugen chose the Tokyo Auto Salon to showcase their newest body kit for the FK8 Civic Type R and as you can see it is seriously dramatic.

It is called the Civic Type R Mugen RC20GT upgrade package and it combines an outrageous body kit and performance focused modifications designed to reduce weight and improve aerodynamics. The new rear wing, side skirts and bumpers, with added dive planes, fins and a diffuser, are all made of carbon fibre. While the re-designed front bumper and large single-frame grille make for a front-end slightly resembling that of an Audi.

There are some new vents on the bonnet and wheel arches and it rides on a set of 20″ lightweight aluminium wheels. The triple-exit exhaust we have all come to know has been ditched for a single-exit titanium one which does not look out of place nestled in the ridiculous diffuser.

Improved engine cooling has been achieved thanks to new oil cooler and high flow air intake systems. Upgraded Brembo brakes, new adjustable suspension, a new steering wheel, bucket seats and four-point harnesses all help make the RC20GT feel like “the ultimate Type R”, according to Mugen.

This being a pre-production model, Mugen is yet to announce a price for the kit which is still in need of some fine tuning before being fitted to your Civic Type R.

Honda Civic Type R to go hybrid as part of electrification plans

Japanese car maker announces plan to make all its European car sales electrified by 2025

The next-generation Honda Civic Type R will get a hybrid powertrain as part of the car maker’s accelerated electrification plans announced today.

The next Civic Type R hot hatch, due from 2021, is likely to adopt a similar set-up to the NSX supercar’s hybrid system, given its tried-and-tested formula for performance, rather than use a fully electric powertrain.

The NSX’s hybrid powertrain combines a twin-turbocharged 3.5-litre V6 petrol engine with three electric motors for a combined total of 573bhp. Given the Type R doesn’t need the power of the NSX, the hatch could use a 2.0-litre petrol combined with electric motors to undercut the current generation’s 0-62mph sprint of 5.8sec.

The move is part of an electrification strategy, announced at the Geneva motor show, in which Honda said it wants to make its European sales completely electrified by 2025.

Two years ago, it revealed it planned to make two-thirds of its sales electrified by 2025, but this has now been superseded by more ambitious intentions to electrify the whole range.

Tom Gardner, Honda Europe boss, said: “Since we made that first pledge in March 2017, the shift towards electrification has gathered pace considerably. Environmental challenges continue to drive demand for cleaner mobility. Technology marches on unrelenting and people are starting to shift their view of the car itself.”

Dave Hodgetts, Honda UK boss, told Autocar that the decision was likely aided by the current success of the recently launched hybrid CR-V. In the UK, it accounts for 60% of overall sales of the compact SUV. Previously, diesel, which is no longer offered, made up two-thirds of CR-V sales.

The announcement ties in with Honda’s recent revelation that it will shut its Swindon plant in the UK in 2021, a move explained by Honda’s “commitment to electrified cars”. It said, at the time, that it would revise manufacturing locations to those areas where volume is expected to be high. This is most likely to be China and Japan.

Today’s announcement tallies with the public debut of the e prototype, a near-production-ready version of the well-received Urban EV concept. Aimed at urban commuters, it will offer a range of 125 miles under the WLTP test regime and an 80% charge from empty by fast-charging in 30 minutes.

It will be the first pure-electric model for Honda in Europe and sit alongside the CR-V hybrid as the only two models in the maker’s electrified line-up. A hybrid variant of the Jazz is due to arrive next, followed by the Civic in 2021.
