Honda has taken the wraps off its subtly facelifted Civic Type R at the Tokyo Auto Salon, handing the hot hatch minor mechanical and styling upgrades.
The refreshed model gains new two-piece brake discs and new brake pads “designed to reduce fade and improve high-speed braking efficiency”.
Suspension revisions, meanwhile, include updated dampers for “better ride comfort”, stiffer rear bushings for “better grip” and modifications to the front suspension to reduce friction and improve steering feel.
Styling changes are as subtle as they come, led by a new larger front grille opening and the availability of a new Type R-exclusive “Boost Blue” exterior paint colour.
Inside, you’ll find a redesigned Alcantara-wrapped steering wheel and a new gear shifter with a restyled knob and even shorter shift throws. The Civic Type R also gains a fresh suite of safety and driver-assistive technologies (for the US market, anyway).

While the performance hatch glory at this year’s Tokyo Auto Salon clearly belonged to Toyota’s insane new GR Yaris, Honda was also out to hog some of the spotlight with its updated Civic Type R.
Following in the footsteps of the facelifted Civic range, the Type R has been given a subtle facelift for 2020, but don’t beat yourself up if you can’t spot the differences. While retaining a decidedly familiar appearance, the new hatch does get a redesigned grille, which has a more block-like appearance, as well as redesigned lower side bumper elements, which do away with the honeycomb pattern.
Honda is treating this debut as more of a teaser than an outright reveal, so there’s still no official word on what technological changes have been made to the car, but according to Paultan.org, Honda director Kimiyoshi Teratani revealed at the Tokyo show that the car’s cooling system has been improved, although there is no word on whether the outputs have increased.
For the record, the current Type R’s 2-litre turbopetrol engine produces 228kW at 6500rpm and 400Nm between 2500 and 4500rpm, for a claimed 0-100km/h sprint time of 5.8 seconds. Power goes to the front wheels only through a six-speed manual gearbox with rev-matching technology.

There's so much to like, a rorty turbo engine, sublime handling and outrageous looks. The best part? There's a generous boot and it's comfortable enough to be driven as a daily.
For 2020, Honda has given the Civic Type R a larger grille which is said to aid engine cooling and this funky new Boost Blue paint job. The cabin gets an Alcantara steering wheel as well as a new gear level with shorter shift throws. There's an Active Sound Control unit which has been added for additional aural effects too.

Limited Edition spec gets weight reduction and track-focused setup, while new Sport Line spec brings subtler look and more refinement
Honda has used the mid-life update of its Civic Type R hot hatchback to introduce two new variants: a low-volume, lighter track special, and a more subtle version of the existing car.
Available to order in the summer alongside the standard 2020 Type R, the new Sport Line variant is designed to offer “more discreet styling and a more refined ride” for those who found the existing model too lairy. The most significant external alteration is the removal of the big rear wing in favour of a lower, more subtle item, but there’s also an exclusive design of 19-inch alloys wrapped in softer sidewall Michelin Pilot Sports 4S tyres.
The interior also dials down the visual drama courtesy of black seat upholstery with red stitching. It’s not all aesthetic changes, however - along with the new tyres, additional soundproofing has been added in the boot and tailgate to reduce noise, vibration and harshness (NVH) levels.

The rather unimaginatively named Civic Type R Limited Edition is part of the facelifted range, alongside the standard model and the new Type R Sport Line, which employs a “stealthier look”.
The Limited Edition version is billed as the “purest expression of Type R to date”, featuring new lightweight components, a stripped-back interior, “enhanced” driving dynamics and updated styling. The turbocharged 2,0-litre, four-cylinder engine, though, is unchanged, still sending 228 kW and 400 N.m to the front axle via a six-speed manual for a claimed zero to 100 km/h time of 5,7 seconds.

There are a fair few folks out there who fancy the Honda Civic Type R but just cannot wrap their head around the gargantuan rear wing. Well, Honda has a new offering for you called the Sport Line and as you can see, the rear wing is no more.
The Sport Line rides on 19-inch wheels with a dark grey finish and a V-shaped spoke. These are then wrapped in Michelin Pilot Sports 4S rubber with softer sidewalls that the regular model, which creates a more forgiving ride. Extra sound deadening at the rear reduces noise, vibration, and harshness in the cabin.
In place of the wing, you will get a more subtle spoiler as well as a grey accent line along the lower edge of the body.

Honda says buyers aren’t put off by Civic Type R’s ‘extreme’ styling
The head of Honda in the United Kingdom says potential buyers are not put off by the “extreme” styling of the Civic Type R.
Speaking to Car Throttle, Honda’s UK managing director Dave Hodgetts suggested the hot hatch’s design wasn’t too radical for the type of buyers the Japanese firm was targeting.
“There is a common general feeling that it is a bit extreme in looks but I think that’s mainly shared by journalists,” Hodgetts told the publication.
“It is the most extreme looking of the current crop but I’ve never heard a dealer say that,” he added, answering a question about whether Honda dealers had received feedback from customers complaining about the Civic Type R’s towering rear wing and aggressive front facia.
