Honda's hot hatch set to go hybrid for its new generation and could be unveiled as soon as next year
The first prototype of the next-generation Honda Civic Type R has been caught testing on German roads ahead of the hot hatch's expected 2022 debut.
The early sighting, on roads near the Nürburgring, comes before we've even seen any spyshots of the standard Mk11 Civic, which is likely to be unveiled in late 2021 and go on sale in 2022. The Type R could be revealed at the same time, however.
The Renault Mégane RS rival is heavily camouflaged in these shots but, unlike the current model, it doesn't appear radically different from its predecessor externally. The overall body shape, with its low, wide stance, saloon-style bootlid and big rear wing is familiar.

If the Honda Civic Type R’s design isn’t quite bold enough for you, this package from tuning firm Mugen might just interest you.
Yes, Mugen has developed a range of aerodynamic parts along with some minor performance and handling upgrades for the hot hatch.
Providing improved downforce to the hot hatch is a front spoiler with side wings, a carbon aero bonnet, side skirts, a rear diffuser and a prominent wing. While the rear wing has been designed to increase downforce, there’s also the option of a wing spoiler that can be attached to the top of the tailgate.

If the standard Honda Civic Type R is not quite hardcore enough for you then perhaps you should consider this bonkers upgrade from Japanese tuner, Mugen.
In standard guise, the Honda Civic Type R’s styling is far from subtle and the chaps at Japanese tuning firm, Mugen, have gone to work to create a radical upgrade for the Civic Type R.
First shown in 2019 as the RC20GT concept at the Tokyo Auto Salon, Mugen has revealed the production version of its upgrade for the Honda Civic Type R.
The styling modifications are extensive and include a new front splitter, reworked air intakes and notably a carbon fibre bonnet with vents and uniquely-styled side mirrors. The Mugen Civic Type R rides on specially-developed 20-inch black and silver wheels and the look of the car is enhanced with extended side skirts which add visual width.

A new report from Japan claims the 2022 Honda Civic Type R will adopt hybrid power in its next-generation, in a move that will also turn Honda’s current front-drive hot-four to an all-wheel-drive rocket.
Best Car Web is reporting that the 2022 Civic Type R will pair the current 2.0-litre turbo four-cylinder petrol with a duo of electric motors over the rear axle.
This hybridised Type R could end up delivering as much as 400 hp which is close enough to 300 kW.

Should I buy one?
Even before these changes, the Type R was one of our favourite rocket-shoppers - and these subtle but well chosen tweaks do nothing to change that view. It’s still on the firm side for UK roads, but it never becomes uncomfortably harsh, while the performance and poise benefits mean that it’s a compromise worth making. For getting from A to B as fast and entertainingly as possible on typically tight and twisty British secondaries, the Honda is up there with the best.
Better still, with prices starting at £32,820 for the standard car, it even represents decent value, matching the Renault Mégane RS 300 Trophy and very likely undercutting the new Volkswagen Golf GTI.
The case for the £39,995 Limited Edition is a little less compelling, because we suspect much of its performance gains come from its tyres, while the loss of air-con in particular seems less weight-saving and more a marketing-led push for track cred. Still, there are only 20 of them in the UK, and they’re all sold.

The Japanese company has now revealed some new upgrades for the 2021 model year Civic Type R, delivered by its Honda Access sub-brand, which is something of the new Mugen.
Most of the new bits available for Honda’s Civic Type R are carbon-fibre in nature, as one would expect. Buyers can opt for a bonnet scoop and rear wing, crafted from carbon-fibre. But it isn’t just any carbon-fire.
Honda has sourced a red-weave composite for its bonnet scoop and wing upgrades, which delivers a scarlet shimmer in direct sunlight. This is made possible by the presence of red polyester threaded into the composite’s top layer.

Honda’s plan to electrify its line-up by 2022 won’t extend to the next Civic Type R, which will retain a high-output turbo petrol engine, Autocar has learned.
In late 2019, Honda brought forward its plan to offer hybrid or fully electric variants of every mainstream model from 2025 to 2022 due to “the pace of change in regulation, the market and consumer behaviour in Europe”, said Honda Europe’s senior vice-president, Tom Gardner.
But that plan will exclude the upcoming Type R version of the 11th-generation Civic, which, when it arrives in 2022, will be one of the last purely petrol-powered Hondas on sale.
An “ultimate high-performance” Type R will return once again, Honda confirmed during the unveiling of the next Civic in prototype, US-focused saloon form. The standard car will be launched globally in the spring, with UK deliveries expected before the end of this year. The Type R will arrive a few months after that.
