The hot hatch's Thursday 21 July reveal date coincides with the Civic's 50th anniversary

The new Honda Civic Type R will finally be unwrapped on Thursday, as the hugely anticipated hot hatchback enters its sixth generation and 25th year on sale.

The hugely anticipated hot hatchback was previously teased in an image (below) which gave little away beyond confirming it will be marked out from the standard Civic by traditional red Type R badging, a bespoke honeycomb grille and a more aggressive air intake arrangement.

But further details – most notably about what lies behind the grille – will only be made public at the car's public debut, the date for which has been confirmed 50 years (to the day) since the first-generation Honda Civic went on sale. This year also marks the 25th anniversary of the Civic Type R.

Honda has unveiled the all-new Civic Type R as it celebrates 25 years of the brand's iconic high-performance hatchback - and 50 years of Civic. The new Type R has been engineered to deliver the most exhilarating Civic Type R experience to date, building on a long tradition of performance cars inspired by the spirit of racing.

Available in Europe from early 2023, the Honda Civic Type R is already setting new benchmarks, recently breaking the front-wheel drive lap record at Suzuka Circuit in Japan. As part of its development, Honda engineers refined every aspect of the new model, including design enhancements that improve aerodynamic performance. Lightweight components and powertrain revisions have created the most responsive and powerful Type R ever.

The new Honda Civic Type R hot hatch has finally been revealed, and it’s set to be the most powerful variant of the model ever.

Revealed in Japan this morning, the new Type R will enter its sixth generation with redesigned bodywork concurrent with the eleventh-generation Honda Civic, also gaining important mechanical upgrades and improved aerodynamics.

After much speculation about the model’s powertrain, it was revealed that the new Type R will be driven by an “evolved” version of the 2.0-litre turbocharged 17YM engine seen in the previous car, mated to an improved six-speed manual transmission. Honda's 'mainstream' models have already gone hybrid-only in Europe, and this is likely to be the last pure-combustion car the brand ever launches here.

Honda says the uprated engine, which gains a revised turbocharger and new compact housing, is the strongest VTEC turbo ever and that it helps to “deliver the fastest, most addictive yet secure and rewarding drive” in Type R history.

The brakes have also been upgraded, this time with “enhanced temperature control and air cooling”.

Honda unveils 2023 Civic Type R

Honda has finally revealed what it says is the “most responsive and powerful (Civic) Type R ever”. Although not as aggressively styled as its predecessor, the next iteration of the world’s most potent series-produced front-wheel-drive hot hatch will go on sale in Japan in September and the rest of the world early next year.

This year marks the 25th anniversary of Honda’s iconic high-performance hatchback, which will also see the introduction of the 6th-gen model in its home market. Since the 3rd-gen (FN) model – launched in 2007 – every iteration of the Japanese hot hatch has been sold in South Africa and we’re hopeful the new FL5 version, which will rival the Hyundai i30 N, Volkswagen Golf 8 GTI and, to a lesser extent, the Toyota GR Corolla, will also come here.

It’s said that Honda engineers have refined every aspect of the 2023 Civic Type R, which recently set a lap record for front-wheel drive cars at the Suzuka F1 circuit in Japan. The new model incorporates several design enhancements that improve aerodynamic performance, lightweight components and powertrain revisions, although the powerplant remains a turbocharged 2.0-litre 4-cylinder unit.

Frustratingly, Honda won’t divulge the higher peak outputs of the Type R’s engine, which is an evolution of the previous model’s 228 kW/400 Nm motor, just yet. However, the Japanese marque says it has fitted a revised turbocharger “featuring a compact housing to improve the overall unit efficiency. The turbine itself has had both its blade count and shape optimized to boost power and improve airflow.”

What’s more, a reworked high-efficiency exhaust system works in conjunction with the above to improve the power-to-weight ratio, torque and top speed of the previous-gen Type R and make the 2023 Civic Type R “one of the most powerful per litre cars in its class,” Honda claims.

Meanwhile, the beefed-up 6-speed manual gearbox gains a high-rigidity lever, an optimised shift-gate pattern and a revised rev-match system (again with an auto-blip function).

Prettier, more powerful and poised to be another giant-killer, Honda sweats the small stuff for a big payoff

Honda might be the master of sweating the small stuff.

This is a company that experiments with the weight of its shifter knobs to get just the right action, and switches from a leather shift gaiter to a mesh one to save 10 grams. Unsurprisingly, when it comes to a new Civic Type R, little details get big attention.

Honda’s still curiously tight-lipped on the power, price or performance of its newest Civic Type R, but it’s taken the time to mention the die-cast aluminium spoiler mounts that cut aero drag. And only Honda would do a deep dive into seat fabrics for its new hot hatch, triumphantly returning with bright red swathes of something that offers ‘a high friction coefficient’ that ‘reduces body slippage in high-g driving situations’.

But for such a detail-oriented company, we have to say that meatier details of the new Type R are still thin on the ground – even after its official debut. So what do we actually know?

Well, that the brilliant six-speed manual is not only retained, but ‘improved’, which a) seems broadly impossible and b) warms our hardened hearts to hear how much Honda still cares about the humble manual gearbox.

We also know the 2.0-litre turbo from the previous, Car of the Year-winning Type R carries over, with tweaks and revisions to the turbo and exhaust resulting in... well, the most powerful Civic Type R ever.

As promised, and after about a thousand teaser posts, Honda has lifted the lid on the all-new Civic Type R.

Not only do we get to see how it looks in the flesh, but Honda has also released some technical information, including detailed descriptions of the engine enhancements that were made, but the power output and performance figures remain a mystery for now.

We do know that in prototype form the new Civic Type R has already broken the front-wheel drive lap record at the Suzuka Circuit in Japan and previously Honda has described the new hot hatch as its most powerful ever. For the record the 2.0-litre turbo VTEC fitted to the current Type R produces 228kW and 400Nm.

“The Honda Civic Type R is renowned for its powerful, highly responsive and high revving engines,” Honda said. “The new model builds on the award-winning basis of its predecessor by evolving the 17YM Type-R's famed engine even further to deliver the fastest, most addictive yet secure and rewarding drive in the model's history.”
