New 2023 Honda Civic Type R brings hardcore styling, power boost

The new Honda Civic Type R hot hatch has been revealed, and it’s set to be the most powerful variant of the model ever.

Revealed in Japan, the new Type R will enter its sixth generation with redesigned bodywork concurrent with the 11th-generation Honda Civic, also gaining important mechanical upgrades and improved aerodynamics.

After much speculation about the model’s powertrain, it was revealed that the new Type R will be driven by an “evolved” version of the 2.0-litre turbocharged 17YM engine seen in the previous car, mated to an improved six-speed manual transmission. Honda's 'mainstream' models have already gone hybrid-only in Europe, and this is likely to be the last pure-combustion car the brand ever launches here.

Honda says the uprated engine, which gains a revised turbocharger and new compact housing, is the strongest VTEC turbo yet and that it helps to “deliver the fastest, most addictive yet secure and rewarding drive” in Type R history.

The brakes have also been upgraded, this time with “enhanced temperature control and air cooling”.

Yes, much like polio and what to do in retirement (haha we’re all going to work until we die, right?), delayed gratification is just something old people had to worry about. Solving the interminable wait between finding out about the new Type R and seeing it is our new friend, AR, here to place a new Type R wherever you think it looks and fits best.

And, depending on your mastery of the three separate Japanese alphabets, you might be able to glean even more than our experience, which basically boiled down to ‘Wow, they spent a lot of time on that AR’, ‘No, seriously, why is anyone picking anything but Competition White?’ and ‘Ha! There’s a little Type R on that guitar amp’.

As for us, all we want is a) an actual Type R to drive, obviously, and b) to see the best and funniest places you lot can put a fake one. So go to it, good people – just stay within the bounds of law and good taste.

Honda “wouldn’t exclude” electrified Civic Type R

Hybrid version of the Honda Civic Type R is possible on the car’s existing platform

“Anything is possible” when it comes to what Honda will do next with the Civic Type R, according to Ko Yamamoto, technical advisor for Honda Motor Europe.

The brand has just revealed the new 2022 Honda Civic Type R, which gets a heavily modified version of the previous 2017 ‘FK8’ Type R’s platform and 2.0-litre turbocharged, inline four-cylinder petrol engine.

“I wouldn’t exclude electrification,” said Yamamoto. “We can’t do a pure electric powertrain on this platform, but I imagine it can take up to a certain level of plug-in hybrid.” He did not confirm that the any future Civic Type R would use this platform, but the model has typically had a short shelf life of only two or three years in the past.

With the brand set to launch a range of new EVs from 2023 as it pushes forward with its plan to phase out combustion engines, it’s reasonable to expect that the 2022 Civic Type R will be the last non-electrified version of the brand’s popular hot hatch.

“Electrification is just another technical measure, like VTEC or a turbo, or multi-link suspension,” Yamamoto told Autocar at an early pre-launch passenger ride for the new Type R.

Honda releases OEM goodies galore for the new 2023 Type R

Hot off of its global release, the new 2023 Type R has already been shown sporting some OEM goodies. Buyers can now equip their FWD Honda hot hatch with a carbon wing and plenty of red details.

Courtesy of Honda Access Japan, Honda’s genuine accessory programme; buyers of the 2023 Type R can now spec their hot hatch with some visual and performance orientated goodies. This includes a carbon fibre rear wing which is 1 kg lighter than standard. On the cosmetic side of things are red add-ons which include mirror caps and Honda badges all around the car – these can accentuate the sizable brake calipers painted in the same colour.

WHAT'S THE VERDICT?

“A spectacularly good hot hatch. Possibly the pinnacle of its era”

The Honda Civic Type R was spectacular, a hot hatch of great maturity when used for sensible stuff, but one possessing a truly wild side when called upon. While we're excited to see what the new Type R will bring, we're still a little sad to see the FK8 go.

Yes, the looks are OTT, but it’d be a real shame if they hold people back from delving beneath the surface, where it’s an engineer’s playground. One of the most formidable hot hatches ever. See you out there, old friend.

If a leak from a Japanese brochure proves true, it’ll outpower all of its competitors.

The 2023 Honda Civic Type R is highly anticipated, but on its debut a few weeks back one major thing was missing: its power numbers. Honda has kept that info close to its chest, as one Honda rep told me at its debut: “Gotta have something to look forward to.” But as things often go with cars like this, a leak from Japan has apparently divulged some of the Type R’s specs. And if these prove to be true, Honda is outgunning the competition.

The leak, first posted on the CivicXI forums, apparently comes from a Japanese brochure for the Type R. It lists the 2023 Type R as making 326 horsepower and 309 lb-ft of torque. These numbers would make it the most powerful production Honda ever made, the most powerful production Civic/Type R ever made, and the most powerful car in the hot hatch/sport compact segment. That also means that the ‘23 Type R has gained 20 hp and 15 lb-ft of torque over the outgoing Type R.

New Honda Civic Type R outputs confirmed

Honda has finally revealed what it says is the “most responsive and powerful (Civic) Type R ever”. Although not as aggressively styled as its predecessor, the next iteration of the world’s most potent series-produced front-wheel-drive hot hatch will go on sale in Japan in September and the rest of the world early next year.

This year marks the 25th anniversary of Honda’s iconic high-performance hatchback, which will also see the introduction of the 6th-gen model in its home market. Since the 3rd-gen (FN) model – launched in 2007 – every iteration of the Japanese hot hatch has been sold in South Africa and we’re hopeful the new FL5 version, which will rival the Hyundai i30 N, Volkswagen Golf 8 GTI and, to a lesser extent, the Toyota GR Corolla, will also come here.

Update #1: At the recent launch of the Honda Civic RS model in SA in early August 2022, we had the chance to chat to the local Honda representatives who said the all-new Civic Type R is confirmed for SA and will be touching down in early 2023.

Update #2: Honda’s global division has announced the peak outputs of its new Civic Type R. The revised K20C1 turbocharged 2.0-litre 4-cylinder engine will generate 235 kW and 420 Nm, increases of 7 kW and 20 Nm, respectively.

New Honda Civic Type R has Golf R power, Honda reveals

When Honda whipped the covers off its new-generation Type R hatchback last month, fans were left feeling powerless because the Japanese carmaker did not release any output figures.

Now Honda has finally told us that the evolved 2.0-litre turbocharged VTEC fitted to the new model is good for 235kW, which is 7kW more than the current model musters and a match for the Volkswagen Golf R, which is albeit not strictly a direct rival due to its all-wheel drive configuration. The Japanese company has also confirmed a torque output of 420Nm for the Type R, which is 20Nm more than both its predecessor and the new Golf R offer.

The revised K20C1 motor boasts a new turbocharger, while the air intake rate has been improved too. The new Type R is also promising a more lively soundtrack, thanks to an active exhaust valve that opens at higher rpm to amplify the sound of the VTEC engine.

Power goes to the front wheels through a six-speed manual gearbox, while a lighter flywheel and recalibrated rev-matching system are in place to sharpen the driving experience.
