New Honda Civic Type R debuts at Geneva

Honda has revealed its new Civic Type R at the 2017 Geneva Motor Show.

Sharing the same fundamentals as the new Civic hatchback, Honda says the Type R has been engineered from the ground up “to deliver the most rewarding drive in the hot-hatch segment - both on road and on the race track”.

The Type R will be exported to Europe and other markets around the world. Honda South Africa says that it "can’t confirm if or when the Type R will arrive in SA".

Improvements all round

The 2.0-litre VTEC turbo engine of the previous generation Type R has been carried over and tuned to produce 235kW while torque remains unchanged at 400Nm.

The short-throw six-speed manual has also been retained.

Honda says the new Type R takes the lighter body shell of the new Civic hatchback and adds further use of adhesive in key areas. Compared to the previous Type R, torsional rigidity has been "improved by 38%".

The front Macpherson strut suspension of the standard hatchback is revised, while at the rear, the new independent multi-link system of the standard car has been tinkered with.

A selection of driving modes are now also on offer. A new ‘Comfort’ setting sits alongside agile ‘Sport’ and track-focused ‘+R’ modes. Honda says each selection tailors the adaptive dampers, steering force, gear shift feeling and throttle response of the car.

The all-new Type R has a more, says Honda, “comprehensive aerodynamic package” than the previous model, including a smoother underbody, front air curtain, a lightweight rear wing and vortex generators at the trailing edge of the roof line.

Honda underlines that the car’s body has a “best-in-class balance between lift and drag”, contributing to greater high speed stability.

Production of the new Civic Type R is anticipated to start at Honda’s manufacturing plant in Swindon, UK, later in 2017.

Here’s why the new Civic Type R has a third tailpipe…

When a prototype version of the new Honda Civic Type R was first spotted testing, it sported a third, smaller tailpipe squeezed between the two centrally mounted exhausts.

This third exit featured on the concept model as well, before finally making it through to the production version unveiled at the 2017 Geneva Motor Show earlier this month.

There has been plenty of speculation regarding the third pipe’s purpose, including the possibility of a Ferrari F40-like setup, where the central pipe guides out gases released from the turbocharger’s wastegate. Some also speculated that it would serve no purpose at all (other than adding to the “interesting” styling).

But Honda’s assistant project lead on the Civic Type R recently explained to CarThrottle that the extra pipe does indeed have a function.

“The three tailpipes each have a function. At low revs, exhaust gas is streaming out of all three pipes in order to create a very dynamic, ‘roaring’ sound,” Hideki Kakinuma told the publication.

“At mid and high revs, the middle pipe creates a certain negative pressure, which reduces the booming noise in the cabin. We can amplify the exhaust sound, but by controlling the exhaust flow we can also reduce the noise we want to avoid in certain operational conditions,” he explained.

4 wheel drive would be nice and would make it worth considering for myself. But a bit to ricey in the looks department.

Price is close to a Golf R / Ford Focus RS so if it was me I would rather jump for one of those (or even PP GTI / Ford Focus ST) .

Honda Civic Type R grabs back FWD ‘Ring record!

Honda says its latest Civic Type R has set a new lap record for front-wheel-drive production vehicles at the Nürburgring Nordschleife in Germany.

On 3 April 2017, the Japanese automaker says a “development car” lapped the famous circuit in 7 minutes 43,8 seconds. Last year, the Volkswagen Golf GTI Clubsport S (first 7 minutes 49,21 seconds, then 7 minutes 47,19 seconds on a second attempt) bettered the previous Civic Type R’s time, and now the Honda has grabbed it back. Well, sort of.

You see, Honda says the lap time was achieved during the final phase of the model’s testing regime, on a dry track with an optimum ambient temperature for the best tyre and powertrain performance. But was it really a production-spec car that completed the lap?

Well, Honda says the development car in question was “technically representative of production specification”, although it was fitted with a “full floating roll cage” for safety reasons (but its presence apparently did not provide any additional rigidity).

“The extra weight of the cage was compensated for by the temporary removal of the infotainment system and rear seats. The car was using road legal track-focused tyres,” Honda added.

The updated 2,0-litre turbocharged VTEC engine produces 235 kW and 400 N.m, with new lower gear ratios in the six-speed manual transmission further improving the car’s acceleration.

The Civic Type R is also lighter than the previous model, with a claimed torsional stiffness improvement of 38%. Honda says the updated multi-link rear suspension system “enhances stability under braking and reduces the total roll movement of the car, enabling later braking into corners and helping to achieve higher cornering speeds during the lap”.

“The cornering speed achieved in the new Type R is higher because the car features a wider track and tyres, a longer wheelbase, new multi-link suspension in the rear and optimised aerodynamics that improves stability,” said Ryuichi Kijima, the lead chassis engineer on the project.

“For example, drivers typically enter the corner after Metzgesfeld at around 150 km/h. Even at this medium-speed corner, the speed is around 10 km/h higher due to the new Type R’s excellent stability. So, with improved cornering performance, we can increase the speed throughout the lap, helping the new Type R to achieve a much quicker lap time.”
