Honda Urban EV confirmed for Geneva debut

First design sketch of production version of Honda's retro-styled electric city car released ahead of March reveal

Honda's upcoming Urban EV electric city car will make its production prototype debut at the upcoming Geneva motor show.

The compact EV, which has recently been spotted testing on public roads ahead of going on sale later this year, was previewed by an official sketch of the prototype. It again shows a close similarity to the original concept, which was first revealed at the 2017 Frankfurt motor show.

The subtle glow from the dashboard seems to indicate the production prototype will use a similar digital display to the concept, albeit one that sits more flush with the dash than the protroding design seen originally.

The heavily camouflaged prototypes seen ahead of launch show a strong resemblance to the original concept, with similar dimensions and round headlights, although many of the car's lines are still obscured. However, we can make out that it now has five doors instead of the concept's three, while a curvier front-end design is likely due to pedestrian crash safety regulations.

A concept version that hinted at the design of a production model was well received when it was revealed at the Frankfurt motor show last September and subsequently displayed at the Geneva motor show.

The Urban EV concept proved so popular that Honda has made very few changes to the final car’s design. Inside, the major changes will be the switch from four seats to five and the adoption of more conventional switchgear.

Speaking about opening order books in Britain, Honda UK boss Dave Hodgetts said the company expected the model to do “very well”. He added that it will “test people’s real attitude towards the car” beyond just liking the look of it.

However, few details about the car have been revealed, and Hodgetts said he “will push hard to get meaningful information” so that potential buyers know what they are committing to.

While it’s too early for pricing, Hodgetts recognised it would not be a cheap car despite being a supermini, and that Honda would position it as a premium model.

He added that he hoped electric vehicle pricing would start to come in line with combustion-engined models in two or three years’ time.

The electric car, the brand’s first for Europe (Honda already sells an electric Clarity hatchback in Japan and the US), is built on a new dedicated electric platform and “sets the direction for the technology and design” of its future EVs.

The Urban EV has low and wide proportions and is 100mm shorter than the Jazz, making it 3895mm long. When on sale, the car will not steal sales from other models, which helped its case for production, according to a senior Honda source.

The concept also had a Honda emblem backlit in blue, previewing a new styling feature for future EVs from the brand.

At the front, between the headlights, interactive messages can be displayed including greetings, advice for other drivers or charging status updates.

Inside, Honda has intended to create maximum visibility for drivers thanks to slim A-pillars and a wide windscreen. Entry and exit from the concept is via rear-hinged coach doors.

A so-called floating dashboard console houses the steering wheel column, a set of simple control buttons and a panoramic screen. The wrap-around screen goes beyond the dashboard and extends into the doors, a feature that works as the car’s wing mirrors through digital camera display.

No powertrain or range details were given for the concept, but Honda said the car would include a high-density lightweight battery pack, integrated heat management and energy transfer functions both to and from the vehicle. A source at Honda suggested a short-to-middling range, so around 155 miles (250km) is expected.

The Japanese car maker recently announced that each of its new model lines from now on would feature electrified technology in Europe.

It hopes to have two-thirds of its new car sales in the region using electrified technology by 2025, five years earlier than its overall global goal.

Honda president Takahiro Hachigo explained: “Here in Europe, we see this move towards electrification gathering pace at an even higher rate than elsewhere.”

The firm unveiled its Honda Power Manager Concept last year, an integrated energy transfer system that can distribute electricity to and from the main grid, as well as directing power flow from renewable sources and managing an electric vehicle battery connected to the home.

Philip Ross, senior vice president for Honda Europe, said: “When appropriate, Power Manager can draw on energy from the EV battery to power the home and minimise the demand from the main grid. It even allows the energy stored in the EV to be sold back to the grid to generate an income for the owner.”

The technology is undergoing a trial in western France, as part of the development of a regional ‘smart grid’ that's due to be completed in 2020.

Ye God’s that’s actually decent looking. Hopefully they tone it down slightly, but the general feel is pretty cool. I wonder if it comes with built-in freeflow sounds, for the southies?

Honda drops first sketch of ‘Urban EV’ production model…

Remember the little Honda Urban EV Concept first shown at the 2017 Frankfurt Motor Show? Well, the Japanese automaker has confirmed a prototype of the production version will bow at the Geneva International Motor Show in March, while also releasing the first official sketch of the new model.

The firm says its new electric vehicle has been developed with a focus on “functionality and purpose”, with the prototype sketch demonstrating this with its “clean, simple and unique design”.

Of course, the sketch draws clear inspiration from the aforementioned concept (itself reminiscent of the first-generation Civic). And when will the proper production model arrive? Well, Honda says it will be on sale “later in the year”.

Indeed, Honda predicts that some two-thirds of its European sales will feature “electrified technology” by the year 2025.

For the record, the earlier concept could accommodate four occupants across two bench seats; the front bench upholstered with a natural grey fabric, with wooden accents on the seat backs, squabs and arm rests.

The cabin sported a “floating” dashboard design with what the manufacturer described as “a large panoramic display screen”. The facia itself featured a wrap-around screen that ran behind the console before extending into the doors, where it essentially digitally replaced traditional side-mirrors.

Honda previews ultra-cute electric hatch

Honda’s ultra-cute Urban EV Concept that was revealed at the Frankfurt show in 2017 has taken a step closer to reality with news that the prototype version of the production car will reveal itself to the world at the Geneva Motor Show in early March.

What you see here is the first (albeit horribly cropped) sketch of the prototype, which will be a much closer indication of what the showroom car will look like when it makes its global debut towards the end of 2019.

Although you don’t see it here, previous disguised prototypes spotted on the streets show that, quite sensibly, the production hatchback ditches the concept’s three-door layout with ‘suicide’ doors for a more conventional five-door configuration with hinges where you’d normally expect them.

The prototype sketch does imply, however, that the little Honda will become one of the first production vehicles to forgo normal wing mirrors for a camera-based system much like that used in the Audi e-tron.

What it does take from the concept are its round lights and that black glass frontal panel that replaces the grille, as well as blacked-out A-Pillars, and bonnet-mounted charging flap.

But don’t expect it to come cheap.

Honda’s UK boss Dave Hodgetts recently told Autocar that the electric hatch would be positioned as a premium model, given that batteries are still very expensive compared to internal combustion engines.

The publication also reported that the EV hatch would be built on a new platform for electric vehicles.

Honda’s new EV prototype: first glimpse of the cabin

In January 2019, Honda confirmed plans to reveal a prototype version of its upcoming production electric vehicle (which will draw inspiration from the little Honda Urban EV Conceptof 2017) at the Geneva International Motor Show. And now the Japanese brand has given us our first glimpse of the prototype’s screen-heavy cabin.

Honda says the interior was designed to create a “warm and engaging atmosphere”, featuring a full-width, cleanly designed dashboard with what the firm describes as “intuitive user-focused technology”.

Judging by the image, the vehicle’s lengthy digital dashboard will be split into three sections, including an instrument cluster sited directly ahead of the driver. In the image, the central screen plays host to often-used features (such as navigation and phone), while the far-right display shows a graphic plus various audio functions. Of course, there’s every chance the layout of these screens will be highly configurable.

It’s also worth noting the air-conditioning controls appear to be actual physical buttons, sited in the centre console and separated from the digital elements by a full-width wood trim piece. The steering wheel, meanwhile, includes what appear to be adaptive cruise control switches.

Earlier, Honda said the new retro-styled electric vehicle had been developed with a focus on “functionality and purpose”, with the first prototype sketch demonstrating this with its “clean, simple and unique design”. Of course, the sketch draws clear inspiration from the aforementioned concept (itself reminiscent of the first-generation Civic).

So, when will the proper production model arrive? Well, Honda says it will be on sale in initial markets “later in the year”…

Honda Urban EV: interior revealed ahead of Geneva debut

The production version of Honda's electric, retro-themed Renault Zoe rival is due to be unveiled next month

Honda is readying the production version of the Urban EV for its Geneva motor show unveiling, and it has now released an image of the car's interior.

The battery-electric model, Honda's first to be sold in Europe, contrasts its classic exterior look with a futuristic interior that features an infotainment screen stretching right across the dashboard. Honda says it has been designed to "create a warm and engaging atmosphere" with "intuitive, user-focused technology".

The five-door hatchback was recently spotted testing on public roads and then previewed in an official image. It again shows a close similarity to the original concept, which was first revealed at the 2017 Frankfurt motor show.

The heavily camouflaged prototypes seen ahead of launch show a strong resemblance to the original concept, with similar dimensions and round headlights, although many of the car's lines are still obscured. Honda's Radical New Full-Screen Cabin

The trends towards battery-driven vehicles packaged within urban-friendly dimensions has given Honda the opportunity to channel its compact car legacy.

At this year’s Geneva auto show the Japanese brand will show its Urban EV is a configuration which will be very close to final production and to tease us, they’ve released a POV view of the cabin.

Blending digitisation with traditional materials and design simplicity, it’s a happy departure from the aged gaming graphic infotainment interfaces Honda’s delivered in its production vehicles until recently. The Urban EV’s cabin is dominated by a full-width digital dash, comprising five individual screens.

Three of these screens relay driving information, infotainment functions and the Urban EV’s battery status amongst them. Flanking these three anchor digital displays, are two screens at the extremities of the Urban EV’s cabin architecture, which provide a live stream side-mirror function, replacing conventional externally mounted side mirrors.

This swathe of digitisation has compelled Honda’s designers to be clever in planning the tangible touchpoints for Urban EV. The steering wheel is a thin twin-spoke helm, to ensure as much of the digital screen dash remains visible, no matter what the steering angle is.

Automotive designers have learned that traditional analogue controls can be superior to a pure digital touchscreen interface for certain functions, such as climate control and infotainment volume adjustment. As such, Honda’s added some dials to the centre stack, to ensure a near perfect blend of infotainment streaming via a digital screen, and intuitive adjustability by reach-and-touch. Digital media pairing options will be USB, Bluetooth and even HDMI.

And that Japanese teak inlay which underscores the full-width dash? It’s perfect 1970s audiophile design, reinterpreted for an automotive application.

Honda e Concept

Honda's new urban electric vehicle will be previewed at the 2019 Geneva International Motor Show in the form of the Honda e Prototype. This new model leads on from the brand's highly acclaimed 2017 Urban EV Concept, and is a key part of Honda's "Electric Vision" strategy for the European region.

Designed to meet the needs of the modern lifestyle, the Honda e Prototype combines unique design, advanced functionality and engaging driving dynamics. The vehicle delivers a package perfect for the urban environment.

Distinctive, simple exterior design

The Honda e Prototype has been developed with a focus on functionality & purpose featuring a simplicity of design with unique character. The smooth body contours lead from the bonnet to the panoramic windscreen to create a continuous surface up and over the front passengers. Further enhancing aerodynamic performance, the stepless A-pillars sit virtually flush with the glass, to help deliver a quiet, refined journey.

Stand-out style elements, which accentuate the clean, uncluttered profile, include flush 'pop out' door handles and compact cameras replacing traditional side view mirrors. Both the door handles and Camera Mirror System are unique features for a vehicle in this class. The car's advanced charging port is integrated centrally in the bonnet for ease of use from either side of the car, with LED lighting visible through the glass cover to welcome the driver and inform of the battery charging status.

Black panels with unique concave profiles at the front and rear are defining design motifs. The unique and exacting attention to detail of the round light clusters enhance the overall simple, clean design and defines the Honda e Prototype's 'human face'.

Beneath the skin is an all-new, EV-specific platform that allows for compact proportions, while a relatively long wheelbase, wide track and short overhangs facilitate exceptional urban manoeuvrability and dynamic driving characteristics. The appearance of a low, muscular stance - emphasised by the flared wheel arches that accommodate the wide tyres - lends a dynamic accent to the simple, clean exterior design.

Contemporary interior with advanced technology

Inside, a spacious cabin with a modern minimalist aesthetic creates a relaxed ambience for occupants. A comfortable lounge-like feel is achieved with the application of melange-style sofa fabric and other tactile materials often found in contemporary homes. The sense of spaciousness is enhanced by the walk-through flat floor in the front and rear of the cabin.

To keep occupants engaged with their connected lifestyles, the intuitive and customisable dual screen horizontal display features a range of intelligent applications and services. This sophisticated high-end interface has been designed for ultimate usability and shifts the car beyond being a means of transportation to become fully integrated into modern everyday life.

The array of next-generation digital aids is presented alongside many of the car's comfort and infotainment controls for easy multi-tasking and simple menu navigation. Screens showing the rear-view images relayed from the Camera Mirror System are integrated at either end of the dashboard ergonomically positioned to ensure a natural feel and vision for the driver. The vehicle also features a digital rear view camera increasing the driver's field of vision.

Sporty and efficient for urban commutes

The first compact Honda car on a dedicated EV platform delivers a blend of efficiency, performance and usability that is perfect for urban environments. The Honda e Prototype will deliver a range of over 200km and a 'fast charge' functionality of 80% battery charge in 30 minutes, making it ideal for everyday commuting. On the road, the driving dynamics are focused on delivering a fun and emotive experience, with the powerful electric motor driven through rear wheels for next-generation small-car performance.

Honda’s urban EV chases ‘Apple-style’ X-factor

Honda expects its new four-seat electric city car to command inherent added-value appeal, like an Apple product

The production version of the Honda e prototype electric city car will go on sale in Europe later this year – and the firm believes the car’s retro design will give it an Apple-style appeal to customers.

The four-seater, which will be displayed at the Geneva motor show, is “95% production ready”, according to the firm. It maintains the styling of the Urban EV Concept unveiled at the 2017 Frankfurt motor show, albeit with the addition of an extra set of doors.

Project manager Kohei Hitomi said the machine had been the subject of an internal “battle” over whether to put it into production, with the positive reaction to the concept being a key factor in it gaining approval.

Honda has yet to confirm full technical details of the car, which is slightly shorter than a Jazz and around 100mm taller than a Mini, but has said it will likely have an official range of around 125 miles, with fast-charging capacity to reach 80% charge in 30 minutes.

The e prototype is built on a new platform designed for A- and B-segment electric cars, with underfloor batteries that are similar to those used in the US market Accord plug-in hybrid. The rear-mounted electric motor drives the rear wheels, which employ torque vectoring to give a smoother response and improved handling in tight corners.

Although the e prototype’s range is substantially lower than that offered by rival EVs such as the 282-mile Kia e-Niro or BMW i3, which offers 193 miles, Hitomi said it was necessary to keep the batteries small to fulfil its city-car role.

“We believe the range is sufficient for this segment of car,” said Hitomi. “Some potential customers might not be satisfied, but when you think about bigger range and a bigger battery, it has drawbacks in terms of packaging. It’s a balance.”

The e prototype features cameras instead of rear-view mirrors, which help improve aerodynamic efficiency. There are also flush door handles and the charging port is mounted centrally in the bonnet.

The cockpit is dominated by two 12in touchscreens, built into a dashboard finished with a wood-effect trim. The seats – including a two-seat bench in the rear – are covered in polyester, which, as with the wood effect, is designed to make the interior feel like a living room.

The e prototype will be built in Japan and go on sale in selected European markets in late 2019, with others following in 2020. It will also be sold in Japan.

The firm has yet to set pricing. Hitomi said it is “important” the car is affordable but he added: “A low price is not always a guarantee of success. When you look at Apple products, they are not cheap, but everyone wants to have them because of their added value. We believe it is the same for the electric vehicle.”

Honda Previews All-New Electric Vehicle

Remember Honda's cute city electric car concept? Well, it's taken a few big steps closer to production and next week what you see here will be showcased at the Geneva Motor Show. This is the Honda e Prototype.

Back in 2017, Honda revealed its Urban EV Concept which had tongues wagging. Not only was its retro styling dripping in cool, but its electric tech under the skin made a bold statement of intent for Honda's EV strategy. Now, the Honda e Prototype has been revealed ahead of a public debut at the 2019 Geneva Motor Show.

Honda claims this e Prototype is near production ready and says that the final version will begin production later this year. Featuring things like flush pop-out door handles and cameras replacing the side mirrors, the Honda e Prototype certainly looks fresh and we're happy to say that not too much in terms of design has been lost from the original concept. Inside, the cabin looks spacious and modern and features a massive intuitive and customisable dual screen horizontal display with all the latest applications and connectivity services.

This is the first compact Honda car on a dedicated electric vehicle platform and Honda claims it has a range of over 200 km and with the fast charge functionality, 80% of battery is available after just 30 minutes of being plugged in. Honda shows cute new electric hatch in prototype form

Honda drew admiring glances from all fronts at the Frankfurt Motor Show in 2017 when it revealed its Urban EV concept and now it’s time to meet the production model, or at least something close to that.

Set to make its debut at the Geneva Motor Show in March, the e Prototype previews the showroom model that will go into production later this year, and it’s retained much of the flavour that made the aforementioned concept car a hit, while becoming more practical with a five-door configuration.

The vehicle is built on Honda’s new rear-wheel drive platform for electric vehicles and will have a range of more than 200km between charges, Honda promises, and will charge to 80 percent in 30 minutes at a fast-charging facility.

The e Prototype also has some interesting design features, such as pop-out door handles and a black panel with LED backlighting to replace the front grille, while the traditional side mirrors have been replaced by a camera-based system.

The cabin features a series of screens that span the full width of the dashboard, and yet Honda has kept the rest of the design decidedly minimalistic, while melange-style sofa fabric seat upholstery aims to create a homely feel.

The new hatchback is considered to be a key part of Honda’s “Electric Vision” strategy for the European region, and at this stage it’s not known whether the vehicle will ever be destined for South African shores.

Near-production (RWD!) Honda E Prototype revealed

The new Honda E Prototype has been revealed ahead of its official debut at the Geneva International Motor Show in March 2019, previewing a new retro-styled urban electric vehicle set to go into production later in the year.

The unveiling of this near-production prototype follows the Japanese brand’s debut of the Urban EV Concept back in 2017.

Honda promises the new rear-wheel-drive vehicle will feature “engaging driving dynamics” and deliver a package “perfect for the urban environment”.

The prototype boasts flush “pop-out” door handles and compact cameras replacing traditional side mirrors, while the charging port is integrated centrally in the bonnet.

The vehicle runs on Honda’s new EV-specific platform, which the firm says allows for a “spacious” cabin despite compact proportions. As we saw in an earlier teaser, the prototype features a customisable multi-screen horizontal display dominating its refreshingly uncluttered facia.

Honda claims the E Prototype will deliver a range of “over 200 km”, with an 80 percent charge from empty taking a some 30 minutes when using a fast charger.

HONDA e Prototype

By far the most captivating and talked about concept car of the last 5 years was Honda’s little pearlescent white Urban EV.

That was 2017. This is now.

Confusingly the perfectly descriptive 'Urban EV' name has gone and instead been replaced by 'e Prototype', only this isn’t really a prototype.

This is a 95% finished EV Honda that goes on sale this year, and which Honda hopes will recapture the company’s mojo.

Does it deserve to? Jonny finds out with a secret tour of the vehicle from its Japanese designers.
