The Honda e (EV)

Honda e prototype to spawn family of small EVs

Production version of Sports EV two-seater tipped for new electric car platform

The new electric car platform developed for the production version of the Honda e prototype will be used for other small EVs in the future – which are set to include a version of the Sports EV Concept.

The Sports EV Concept was shown at the 2017 Tokyo show, and previewed a striking two-seat, rear-wheel-drive sports car with styling based closely on the Urban EV Concept that previewed the e prototype. It was intended as a vision of a flagship performance EV from the firm that would sit alongside the Honda Civic Type R and NSX.

The production car that is developed from the e prototype will be built on a new platform designed for A- and B-segment electric cars, and e prototype project manager Kohei Hitomi confirmed it would be used as the basis for a range of machines. It is likely that the firm would push to style those cars in a similar retro manner to the e prototype to create an EV family, although more traditionally styled cars are also likely.

Speaking about the platform, Hitomi said: “The fundamental technology is there and our colleagues in the design department are thinking in many directions.”

Asked if the platform would suit a car like the Sports EV, he said: “It can be any car. It can be a sporty car or a box-type car. Personally, I’d very much welcome a sporty car on that platform.”

Honda e prototype EV to offer more than 98bhp

Honda four-seat electric city car, previewed by early Urban EV concept, to command added-value appeal, like an Apple product

The production version of the Honda e prototype electric city car will go on sale in Europe later this year – and the firm believes the car’s retro design will give it an Apple-style appeal to customers.

The four-seater, displayed at the Geneva motor show, is “95% production ready”, according to the firm. It maintains the styling of the Urban EV Concept unveiled at the 2017 Frankfurt motor show, albeit with the addition of an extra set of doors. While Honda has yet to reveal full technical details of the car, its designers told Autocar at the Geneva show that it would offer "more than" 98bhp and 221lb ft of torque.

Honda said more than 15,000 people have already expressed interest in the machine in Europe. While pricing has yet to be set, Autocar understands the firm is aiming for a figure around £30,000.

Project manager Kohei Hitomi said the machine had been the subject of an internal “battle” over whether to put it into production, with the positive reaction to the concept being a key factor in it gaining approval.

Honda has yet to confirm full technical details of the car, which is slightly shorter than a Jazz and around 100mm taller than a Mini, but has said it will likely have an official range of around 125 miles, with fast-charging capacity to reach 80% charge in 30 minutes.

That is some seriously sexy little urban EV if you ask me..

Honda ticked ALL the right boxes on that one. I'm not an urban EV fan, but I'd have one of those in a heartbeat if it looked like it does...

The more I look at this little thing the more I like it.
Very cool.

Honda e confirmed as name for maker's electric city car

Honda four-seat car, previewed by early Urban EV concept, to command added-value appeal, like an Apple product

Honda has confirmed that its upcoming electric city car wlll be called the Honda e when it goes on sale in Europe later this year.

The model was first revealed as the Urban EV concept at the 2017 Frankfurt motor show. A near-production version was then shown at this year's Geneva motor show and called the Honda e prototype. The car maker has now confirmed that name will stay for the production version.

The firm believes the car’s retro design will give it an Apple-style appeal to customers.

The protoype shown at Geneva motor show is “95% production ready”, according to the firm. It maintains the styling of the Urban EV Concept, albeit with the addition of an extra set of doors. While Honda has yet to reveal full technical details of the car, its designers told Autocar at the Geneva show that it would offer "more than" 98bhp and 221lb ft of torque.

Honda gives a name to cute, upcoming electric hatch

Honda has announced that its upcoming electric hatch will simply be called the ‘Honda e’.

Set to go into production later this year, the hatch was shown in prototype form at the Geneva Motor Show in March this year, where it was also revealed that it would be built on a brand new rear-wheel-drive platform created specifically for future electric vehicles.

Although the near-production prototype is not as cute as the earlier Urban EV Concept that was shown at the Frankfurt show back in 2017, it still has plenty of retro vibes both inside and out as Honda hopes to create some novelty value to help justify what will likely be a high asking price, due to batteries still being on the expensive side.

WATCH: Honda's high-tech side-camera mirrors will be standard for new EV

Honda has confirmed that the Side Camera Mirror System of the new Honda e urban electric vehicle will be available as standard when the car enters production. As seen on the prototype version, the technology is a first in the compact segment and brings significant benefits for styling, safety, aerodynamics and refinement.

The Side Camera Mirror System replaces conventional side view mirrors with compact cameras providing live images to two six-inch screens inside the vehicle. Integrated at either end of the dashboard, these ergonomically positioned screens ensure a natural feel and vision for the driver.

New Honda e: side cameras confirmed for electric city car

BMW i3 rival will feature cameras instead of wing mirrors as standard; reservations open with £800 deposit

Honda has confirmed that its new electric city car, the Honda e, will feature side cameras in place of wing mirrors as standard when deliveries start in 2020.

The Urban EV concept, first revealed at the 2017 Frankfurt motor show, featured the camera system, which Honda claims reduces aerodynamic drag by around 90% compared to conventional wing mirrors. The firm says that improves the efficicency of the entire vehicle by 3.8%, playing a significant role in maximising range.

The camera system will feature two modes: a normal mode, and a wide mode with an extended field of view, and Honda claims they reduce blind spots by at least 10% compared to normal mirrors. A special water-repellent coating will be used to stop water blocking vision.

The new machine, which is now available to order before deliveries commence in 2020, will take to the event's hillclimb course, with another on display on the Honda stand.

Honda says the e that will appear at Goodwood will be "95% true" to the production version. The latest version of the NSX hybrid supercar will also appear on the Japanese firm's Goodwood stand.

Considering some of the questionable decisions the local arm has made lately who knows what will happen.

My bet is their heads will remain where they are.

Yeah unfortunately I fear so as well...

And it would be a mistake for the brand... even at a direct 30k GBP conversion, I would see the Honda e selling relatively well here.

New Honda e: powertrain details of BMW i3 rival revealed

Electric city car to be capable of 125-mile range; set for dynamic debut at July's Goodwood Festival of Speed

Honda has revealed further details of its new electric city car, the Honda e, ahead of its dynamic debut later this year.

The new machine, which is available to order before deliveries commence in 2020, will arrive with a 50:50 weight distribution and a low centre of gravity, thanks to the placement of its batteries low within its wheelbase. Power will be sent through the rear wheels, and the car will ride on four-wheel independent suspension.

The e will use a liquid-cooled 35.5kWh battery that Honda claims should deliver more than 125 miles of range. Rapid-charging should allow for an 80% charge in less than 30 minutes, although Honda has yet to reveal the exact maximum charging capacity of the car.

While the estimated range is substantially lower than that offered by rival EVs such as the 282-mile Kia e-Niro and 193-mile BMW i3, Honda e project manager Kohei Hitomi explained that this was necessary to keep the batteries small to fulfil its city car role.

First drive: Honda E 2019 prototype

The electric Honda E has been right-sized for brisk, urban, fun driving at the expense of range. Does it deliver and is it worth the compromise?

What are you paying for when you buy an Apple iPhone? A combination of stylish design, cutting-edge features and versatility that sets the iPhone apart from rival smartphones? Or are you paying a premium for form over function, spending extra for that Apple logo despite other, technically superior phones being available for substantially less money?

I pose that question because Honda bosses rather fancy the E, their succinctly titled forthcoming electric city car, as the car equivalent of an Apple product. By that, they mean that it mixes stunning design with superb functionality, to the point that people will be prepared to pay a premium – likely somewhere just over £30,000 – for it.

And there’s no doubt the diminutive Honda E Prototype has won an army of admirers on the basis of its ultra-stylish looks, as the web numbers show every time Autocar publishes a story on it. That has been true since the original (and arguably better named) Urban EV Concept was launched in 2017, and when the latest, roughly 95% production ready E Prototype you see here was revealed at the Geneva motor show in March this year.
