Now, there are various reasons to try out new ROMs. I do it because I got hooked back in the Windows Mobile days of yore when it was the only way to get a halfway decent operating system on your phone. That criteria is no longer valid, as there is nothing wrong with the DHD stock ROM. Therefore there is no reason on earth to try a new ROM and go through the risky procedure of flashing one to your device. That said, I have noticed some slight performance increases with my Cyanogen Mod, and the lag problem I had has disappeared completely. once again:
# DISCLAIMER This may void your warranty. If you brick your device using this guide, the author will accept NO responsibility for any damages incurred. This should not be attempted lightly. In fact, unless you have very good reason to do so, this should not be attempted at all. In doing this, you will lose all personal data including dictionaries, location data, sms's and other that have been stored in the phone memory to date.
DO NOT ATTEMPT THIS BEFORE ROOTING, GAINING SUPER USER ACCESS, FLASHING ROM MANAGER AND MAKING A NANDROID BACKUP AS ILLUSTRATED IN POST #47!
Anyways, there quite a few ROMs floating about, check out
XDA if you are interested. For the purposes of this exercise, I will be using the Cyanogen nightly updated mod.
1.) To start, download the newest version of the ROM
here
2.) We also want the Google Addon package, so grab the
Latest HDPI zip file
here
3.) Now, tether your DHD to your PC via USB, and select Disk Drive. Copy the 2 zip files to the SD card. Then disconnect.
4.) Run ROM Manager, and reboot into recovery mode.
5.1) scroll down, and do a wipe: (wipe data/factory reset)
5.2) now, wipe (wipe cache partition)
5.3) select "Install zip from sdcard"
5.4) select "choose zip fom sdcard", scroll to the "cm_ace_xxxx.zip" and select
5.5) select "install zip from sdcard" and do the same for "gapps-hdpi-201xxxxx-signed.zip"
5.6) exit and select reboot.
Now resetup your device from scratch. just about any ROM can be flashed this way, I know LeeDroid for DHD is pretty popular. Again, don't do this unless you know exactly what you are in for, and be very very careful of Radio flashes. nothing will brick your device faster than a botched radio flash.
