The Huawei E5186 LTE-A discussion thread

Interestingly, I also think that the "signal bar" display on the B593 includes a dependence on RSRQ. On my own device, I have seen situations where even with high signal strength (RSSI > -50dBm), an RSRQ below -6dB (eg -7dB) on LTE shows only 4 bars. I'm interested to see if the E5186 shows the same behaviour.
The same is observed on ZTE MF283. It only shows "Signal strenght" (which is supposed to be RSSI) and # of signal bars are changing independently. Probably it depends on the current modulation scheme. Higher order modulation will indicate lower SNR under the same conditions. I frequently get faster speeds when 3 bars are displayed as opposed to 4 bars (as it should be).

Hi all,

New here - I have just acquired the E5186 and would like to add it to my home network. I used to have a WDS setup between my old B593 and a Billion 7300NX. I do not see any WDS functionality on the E5186. Has any of you been able to incorporate the router into a network so that other routers can route through it via WLAN? Any suggestions or assistance would be appreciated.

It seems that they removed a lot of the functionality that was available in the B593.

Hi everyone

As what the previous poster asked. Would anyone know if the E5186 has WDS functionlaity?

I would like to add another router as the wifi signal doesn't reach to my bedroom.

The router is placed in the lounge as it has the best signal.

Thanks

Probably not, you would already get answer. Huawei 'gateways' are very poor in the router section and every new model is even more crippled. Do you have DMZ option? It works on other models if you connect Huawei device using Ethernet cable to a real router.

It appears that Telkom stores have absolutely no E5186 in stock... Went yesterday to try sign up month to month for LTE-A and they simply don't know when they are getting any more in stock.

Found one on gumtree for R2 000. Not sure what the retail price is... but do you reckon it is a good deal?

Why not try to order online? I ordered and had it delivered within a week.

I didn't pay. I'm on the Smartbroadband Wireless LTE-A package, you get it free if you sign-up for a 24month contract.

You see I don't want a 24 month contract... Prefer to go month to month with the flexibility of cancelling at any time

Agreed but the device is quite pricey and you can switch to month-to-month after 3 months at any point during the contract, at which point all you have to buy-out the device. The buy-out cost decreases every month. I'm OK with that because I can't get a better service in my area and I don't foresee it improving anytime soon.

Thats nice coz really i need to get it so that when i finally get LTE-A in my area i can get all the benefits from the get go.

And due to the fact that the b593 does switch to Lte-a...its really a good thing to get that multi sim option and inserting the other sim in the new router...benefits both ways as you can shed the load onto the two router and have lekker internet speed experiences on all devices in the house hold.

I had someone come out to test my signal with the E5186 today but only found this thread now.

So after setting it up she did some speed tests and it was downloading at about 12-15Mbps. This was around noon today. Upload was around 4Mbps. Is that really then LTE-A?

Could one boost the speed a bit with the external antennas mentioned here?

They should be delivering the device by the end of the week so I just want to make sure I'm actually getting what I'm paying for.

Hey Choppie81,

I got this router on a Telkom LTE-A package, 50GB.
We are in an LTE only area and the sales person assured me that it would work.

My experience so far - had the router for a week now - LOVE it.
Speeds were 19.78 down and 3.21 up

Got a Poynting Cross Polarised LTE Desktop Antenna - A-XPOL-0010-01
Now I get 38.72 down and 2.48 up

So impressed and happy

Hello guys how can I know if the router connected on lte-a
I see it Lte
The speed 35 down and 45 for up

Seems many Telkom outlets won't sell you an E5186 router unless you can "prove" that you're in LTE-A coverage (of which there isn't much yet). So congrats on managing to get an E5186 in the first place!

Menlyn Park :-)

They did not have any stock of the regular LTE modem, so I suggested they sell me this instead

No stock of the B593s-601, or the newer B315 ?

Whether by chance or by design, you got the right modem for the LTE-A package, as only the E5186 (of those 3) supports LTE-A.
It may take a while longer before E5186 owners start to see the speed benefits of LTE-A (as opposed to "plain LTE), but at least you are now positioned to take advantage when it happens.

Thanks - good to know ;-)

When searching for wifi on your mobile device/computer - this router comes up as 'Hauwei 5G' or something like that.
Connect to the web management page - 4G means LTE so I assume 5G would be LTE-A.

Not sure though

Absolutely - happy to wait for LTE-A as Garsfontein is in the 'pipeline'.

I am not sure what regular LTE modem was out of stock - I was looking at the latest booklet vir Telkom (November) and here they detailed LTE packages starting from smaller GBs per month and on the same page they had LTE-A from 50GB a month with this new router.

Sorry - a total newbie, so do not have the exact details
