The new Hyundai i20 has been officially revealed in Brazil, billed as a “bridge” between a traditional hatchback and a compact SUV thanks to its crossover-inspired black-plastic cladding and added ride height.
Still, it remains to be seen whether the upcoming version for India – the country from which Hyundai Automotive South Africa imports its i20 units – will stick with this slightly raised ride height or pivot to a more traditional, lower-riding iteration.
So, what do we know about the BC4-series Hyundai i20, which is based on an “evolved” version of the K3 platform (rather than the current model’s K2 architecture)? Well, measuring 4 130 mm from front to back, the new-generation hatchback is some 135 mm longer than the model offered in South Africa today.
However, the wheelbase is unchanged at 2 580 mm. Still, we should keep in mind the current Indian-built version is restricted to under 4 metres (measuring 3 995 mm long, to be exact) to allow it to qualify for reduced taxes in that market.
According to Hyundai’s Brazilian division, the new i20’s luggage compartment can swallow some 346 litres (measured using the VDA method), expandable to 1 152 litres with the rear seats folded down. The South Korean firm claims rear-seat space is a “strong point”, saying the bench offers 917 mm of legroom, 961 mm of headroom and 1 391 mm of shoulder room.
In Brazil, the new i20 is available with a 12.3-inch digital instrument cluster and an infotainment screen of the same size. Other cabin highlights for the South American market include vertical air vents, a 6-speaker sound system, paddle shifters, a reverse-view camera and a raft of advanced driver-assistance system (ADAS) features.

New Hyundai i20 breaks cover in Brazil with bold SUV-inspired redesign
Hyundai has revealed a new-generation i20 hatchback in Brazil, and there’s an interesting new twist in its design, which takes inspiration from the brand’s Ioniq 3 electric crossover.
With tauter lines, a slightly raised stance and cladded wheel arches, the new i20 has a more SUV-like appearance, which makes sense given how the market has evolved in recent years.
However, it’s worth noting that this new i20 was revealed by the brand’s Brazilian division, and it’s unclear at this stage whether global versions will resemble the vehicle we see here. South Africa’s i20 hatchbacks are sourced from India, so our market will inevitably receive whichever new product is confirmed for that market.
The Brazilian version, built at Hyundai’s factory in Piracicaba, is based on the company’s K3 platform and conforms to its “H-Architecture”, with the “H” serving as a reference to the vehicle’s external lighting.
At 4,130mm in length, the new Brazilian i20 is 135mm longer than the current model, while the width has grown by 5mm.
The interior boasts a new dual-screen layout, with top versions featuring 12.3-inch screens for the digital instrumentation and infotainment.
Features include wireless Android Auto and Apple CarPlay, as well as a suite of SmartSense safety features, including Rear Cross Traffic Assist, Active Speed Control with Stop & Go, Fatigue Detection and Auto Braking. Also included is Safe Exit Warning, which helps prevent accidents caused by opening doors when other vehicles are approaching.
Four of the six derivatives offered in Brazil are fitted with Hyundai’s familiar 1.0-litre turbocharged petrol engine, producing 86kW, while there is also a naturally aspirated version that delivers 55kW. Six-speed automatic and five-speed manual gearboxes are fitted to the respective models.

Unveiled in Brazil, the new Hyundai i20 is “strategically” positioned to fill the gap between the hatchback and compact-crossover segments. Adopting the South Korean automaker’s K3 platform, the box-fresh i20 measures 4 113 mm in length and 1 780 mm in width; making it 118 mm longer and 5 mm wider than the outgoing, K2-based i20. However, despite its increase in length and width, the new i20’s roofline is slightly shorter, 1 495 vs 1 505 mm. The wheelbase remains unchanged, at 2 580 mm.
The new-generation i20 was revealed with the choice of two ‘Kappa’ powertrain options: 1.0 TGDI and 1.0 MPI. The former, 1.0-litre turbo-triple produces 85 kW and 172 N.m of torque, the latter available from a low 1 500 r/min. The MPI 1.0-litre naturally aspirated three-pot produces 55 kW and 93 N.m.
Stepping inside, the interior features a pair of 12.3-inch digital displays for instrumentation and infotainment, respectively. The latter, touch-enabled unit incorporates wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto smartphone screen mirroring. Further included with the package are a six-speaker sound system, automatic air conditioning with rear air vents, a reverse-view camera supplemented by aft park distance sensors, and Hyundai’s SmartSense safety suite, which comprises such features as adaptive cruise control, lane departure assist, and driver monitoring. Six airbags and Isofix child-seat mounting points are also present.
