He does have a point. Even with competition and efficient private companies, no company is going to provide to the poor for free. Government would have to step in and pay/subsidize with taxpayers money for people who can't afford basic services.

Not necessarily disagreeing.

Do do you drag the country down by doubling on failure? Originally Eskom had the mandate to produce electricity as cost effectively as possible, but not make profit. It was for the people. That went to hell in a basket with many middlemen making profit where they shouldn't, even the ANC.

The govt has shown themselves unable to organize a pissup in a brewery. Yet if SARS was working properly, decent competition in the power generation industry, market forces would determine and affordable price that is sustainable. With the economy working and SARS doing what they should, other mechanisms can be applied. Subsidies? Bulk puchases from suppliers for certain areas ....? In other words, back to basics.

sure, i agree, there have to be subsidies in place just like the NAT's did subsidising electricity, but if it's run by efficient private companies that aren't bleeding money, then that's also good for the tax man.

Think we'd have to get past the whole non-payment issue first before privatization is ever considered an option. If municipalities don't even pay the SOE Eskom now, they sure as hell are not going to pay some private company. Expect toi-toiing and riots until people get their free stuff. No private company will want to operate in such a toxic environment.

All they do with the -- free-stuff -- is waste it , AND make MORE "poor-people"

So you'd leave them to die in the streets? You know what we call that? The poor are what they are, doesn't mean we should mistreat them. We have a social responsibility to look after all members of society - the very young, the very old, the poor, the sick, and the disabled.

The poor only beget an ever growing population of more poor when other structures such as the economy, job creation and other upliftment programs are not in place. Social responsibility in and of itself does not create more poor. Piss poor planning of structures does.
