My wife wants to get "the injection" as a contraceptive and also to hopefully stop her getting a period.

We live in cape town and she says she cannot find anywhere to go to get it.

Can anyone help?

You can go to quite a few pharmacies - they often have a nurse on site that can do it

edit: just phone ahead and make sure what times/days they are available

Hrmm, wife said she tried.

She tried:
Constantia Pharmacy - does not keep it
Dischem Blueroute - does not keep it
Constantia Clicks Pharmacy - does not keep it

Is there any pharmacy you can recommend?

All government hospitals have a clinic for family planning and it's free

There are two pharmacies in 3km radius from me as I sit here, who offer the depo provera, if that's the one.

a friend of mine goes to sunset pharmacy, ground floor. sea point medical centre (cnr regent / st johns rd)

021 4343333

There's depo (taken every 12 weeks) and there's nuristerate (taken every 8 weeks).
All GP's (who have a dispensing licence) offer both and they charge anything between R100 to R300.
I wouldn't recommend using a gynae as they will charge you a consultation fee ontop of that.

Get as much info as you can about both depo & nuri before making a final decision. Each has its own side effects, so you must decide which you can live with (eg: fishy smell vs weight gain)

She should phone a few before going there.

or why don't you go for a vasectomy...easy, she won't be able to do the injection for a prolonged period in any case.

Pharmacist will ask for a doctor's prescription because its not OTC medication. (Unless of course its those dodgy ones near the university).

Government clinic! It's free.
The only thing is the queue for that is ewh!
Luckily, here in Centurion, they recently shuffled things around and the queue for family plan is now different for the rest. So, it's basically in and out!

What do you mean by "prolonged period"?
I was on injection for 3 years and my sister-in-law for 4 years.

Just bear the following things in mind:

They don't recommend staying on the injection for longer than 2 years because of bone density loss.
Women sometimes get spotting while on the injection, which is pretty irritating.
It can take up to a year for fertility to return on the injection. This may sound like a good thing, but the problem is, lets say you want to change to a different type of contraception. All of them will require you to wait for her period. And you have no idea when her period might come back - it can take months. So, if you want to stop using the injection, you will need to go back to condoms until her period comes back, and then you can switch.

I personally think the Gynefix IUD sounds like the best contraceptive available on the market. Google it. No hormones, no needing to remember anything, and a small increase in bleeding which usually goes away after a while. And lasts 5 years.

The purpose of the injection is not as a contraceptive but to stop her getting her period. I have already had a vasectomy.

My wife fell pregnant while on an IUD , it was certainly not a cheap one either , and it was properly placed.
