The iOS 15 Thread/Discussion

How is your battery health on the 12 mini?

I've had mine since launch day which iirc was November last year, so a year and 3 months and it sits at 84%. Battery is still pretty good and I haven't really noticed a dip in performance like I did when the 6s was at 86% it was unusable.

But anyway, I've got it booked in for a new battery at the iStore as I'm not taking any chances and I love this little phone so much I'm keeping it in tip top condition and have no urge to upgrade to a 13 or even 14 when it comes.

Actually, it would be interesting to know everyone's battery health, model and age. My 8 was at 100% when I sold it at a year old after a year of constant daily use and a wireless charge overnight, every night on a generic cheapo charger. I still can't really believe it but I took pics at the time because someone questioned it on reddit :p
You’ve booked your device in at 84%? Let me know what they say. My 11 Pro Max is at 87%, battery life is still great but I still wanted to get a new battery sooner than later, booked it into iStore and when I got there they said they cannot touch it until it hits 80%, they ran diagnostics and al checked out fine and said I should come back only when it hits 80%.
Told them I am willing to pay if need be and they said nope.
Imagine someone in SA refusing money, I was gobsmacked.

Interesting. But I never mentioned the %, I just made the booking on the website booking form. What iStore was this? I'm taking it to Somerset Mall.

IPhone 12
10 months
94 percent

Charge overnight (wireless third party)
Drains to below 20 percent about twice a month

Interesting.

My iPhone 12 is a couple of weeks from turning 12 months.

Maximum capacity is 98 %. Never been charged wirelessly. I also charge my iPhone roughly once a day.

Got the phone in August 2021. Battery health is currently at 94%. The battery lasts the whole day until it needs a charge. I’m a semi-heavy user.

Maybe they're confusing it with Apple's warranty free replacement which is 80% or under for battery replacement?

iOS 15.4 enables Face ID support while wearing a mask, no Apple Watch required

With iOS 15.4 beta 1 Apple is starting to test the ability to use Face ID while wearing a mask but without the need for an Apple Watch around. Not only that, but the company is also improving glasses support.

Mask support was first spotted by YouTuber Brandon Butch. On the screenshot, you can read Apple’s explanation about this feature:

“Face ID is most accurate when it’s set up for full-face recognition only. To use Face ID while wearing a mask, iPhone can recognize the unique features around the eye to authenticate.”

With that, you can set up the facial recognition feature with or without a mask. You won’t need to wear a mask during setup though, even if you choose facial recognition with a mask.

To set this new feature, just head to your iPhone settings, “Face ID & Passcode,” and choose “Use Face ID with a mask.”

Although Apple is at least two years behind, this feature is very handy as a lot of iPhone users don’t have an Apple Watch. Even though unlocking your phone with the Watch can be useful, anyone around you can also unlock your iPhone.

With this new iOS 15.4 feature, it will be possible to unlock your iPhone with the facial recognition feature focusing on your eye area to authenticate.

It was at Fourways Mall iStore here in JHB. The dude at customer care told me they are not allowed to replace it when it’s above 80% even if I want to pay, which I found very weird.

Maybe it’s due to limited supply of batteries? They may possibly have to focus on those who are in fact at 80% or below, which I guess makes sense in an Apple sort of way, lol.

Let me know what they say to you Spizz, if you get it done I’ll just try another iStore near me like Sandton.

You need to have an iPhone 12 or newer to use Face ID with a mask

A new feature in iOS 15.4 and iPadOS 15.4 for using Face ID while wearing a mask requires at least the iPhone 12: it won’t work on the iPhone 11 and the iPhone X or older.

iOS 15.4’s Face ID with a mask requires iPhone 12 or newer

Apple yesterday seeded the first betas of what would become the iOS 15.4 and iPadOS 15.4 software updates to its registered developers and beta testers. Among other goodies, the updates bring a tweak to the Face ID feature which can now authenticate you while wearing a mask, even if you’re not wearing an Apple Watch to add an extra layer of security. It’s a much-needed, albeit overdue improvement that makes Face ID more convenient in the pandemic.

Too bad you’ll probably need a newer iPhone model to use this feature.

MacRumors notes that people are reporting that using Face ID with a mask only works on the iPhone 12 series or later. In other words, you’ll need to use an iPhone 12 mini, iPhone 12, iPhone 12 Pro, iPhone 12 Pro Max, iPhone 13 mini, iPhone 13, iPhone 13 Pro or iPhone 13 Pro Max to use the new “Face ID with a Mask” option.

The site clarifies:

If you have an iPhone 11 or earlier, you will not see the Face ID with a Mask setup screen when updating to iOS 15.4, nor will you have the option to toggle it on in the Settings app.

It’s puzzling why unlocking an iPhone with Face ID while wearing a mask is limited to the iPhone 12 or newer. It’s even stranger remembering that the regular Face ID feature does work on older iPhones as far back as the iPhone X, which came out in 2017.

Wonder if it has something to do with newer A series chips that are built on 5nm?
That being said if this feature is available on A12Z iPad Pro then it should at least be available on XS/Xr and 11 series, I can tell my 2020 iPad Pro has a lesser FaceID setup than my 11 Pro Max as it doesn’t manage as many angles as my iPhone.

Anyway I am managing fine with Apple Watch unlock and entering the code for payments, until I get 14 Pro Max.

iOS 15.4 beta adds support for 120Hz refresh rate in all apps

Apple's latest iPhone 13 Pro and Pro Max flaunt 120Hz ProMotion displays, but only a handful of apps support 120 frames per second. Mostly system apps at that. Well, with the upcoming iOS 15.4 software, Apple is finally adding support for all apps to make use of the buttery-smooth experience. It's worth noting that the iOS 15.4 is currently in beta.

For now, iOS 15.4 is still in beta and the information comes from a developer saying that he got the news from "someone at Apple". He posted a screenshot as proof.

It looks like Apple was able to squash the Core Animation bug that wouldn't allow animations to go beyond 60 fps. However, we can't confirm whether all apps will run at 120 fps automatically or some developers would need to tinker with the code of their apps as well.

Just got the notification on my iPhone and iPad Pro to update to iOS 15.3.1/iPad OS 15.3.1, did this just come out today? Not normal for Apple release on a Thursday/Friday lol, must be very important.

iOS 15.4 RC now available to developers, here’s what’s new

After the “Peek Performance” event, Apple is releasing iOS 15.4 RC to developers. This will likely be the version users will download when the software is available to everyone next week. In addition, the company is also seeding the RC version of iPadOS 15.4. Head below for the full details on these latest releases from Apple.

Today’s build is 19E241. With the latest beta, Apple brought a new, non-binary Siri voice for English American speakers.

iOS 15.4 RC is available to developers and public beta testers via an over-the-air update in the Settings app. As usual, if the update does not immediately appear for download, keep checking, as it sometimes takes a few minutes to roll out to all registered developers.

This new beta includes a wide range of new features for iPhone and iPad users. For iPhone users, there is Face ID support while wearing masks for the first time. iPadOS 15.4 also includes the highly-anticipated Universal Control feature. There are also over 30 new emojis from which to choose, changes to iCloud Keychain, and more.
